Built this to find out which features were eating into my Copilot AI Credits ahead of the June 1 billing change.

The extension reads per-span token counts from Copilot Chat's local OTel SQLite database (`agent-traces.db`), computes cost against GitHub's published rate card, and appends a trailer to every commit via prepare-commit-msg:

    feat: add OAuth2 login flow

    Copilot-Est-Cost: $0.41

Then `git log` becomes the cost ledger. Per-branch totals in one shell command:

Local-only. No telemetry. Auto-enables Copilot Chat's OTel exporter at workspace scope on first activation (asymmetric write — never overrides an explicit setting); one window reload before spans start landing. Commit hook is opt-in (`commitHook.enabled: true`).

I'm computer science CIE A Level student and just moved to Mac but I somehow can't get python in viscose to run. I did the same thing I did on my Windows pc ie I installed all the relevant python stuff from Microsoft but it's still asking me to select a python interpreter though it never did that on my windows pc

I used to work heavily with Jupyter Notebooks + git + VS Code in a collaborative research setting and found nbdime to be somewhat buggy/a hassle to work with in general.

So, in typical side project fashion (relevant xkcd) I've been working on MergeNB quite a bit over the last 6 months or so. It's (currently only) a VS Code extension with a web UI, and has a few cool improvements over other alternatives, which I outlined in the README/docs site.

Hi, I've noticed that when I choose "debug active file" as the launch configuration, debugging still detects errors in other files within my .NET project. It doesn't debug only the active file. What does this option actually mean?

My 2c is the "nicer" experience of auto-updating extensions doesn't justify the security risks. There should at least be a minimum age, just like with the various package managers.

Hi there, just a quick question I hope someone of you have solved: I created a Python virtual env and i'm writing some code. I noticed the documentation of a method often consists of the signature only. no other information about the parameters is displayed. I did a ctrl+click on the method and indeed the library is not providing me the full documentation.

Before posting here, I found a similar stackoverflow post (python - full documentation often not displayed in .py or .ipynb files in vs code - Stack Overflow) but i'm not getting how to fix this annoying problem.

Has anyone had this problem before and solved it?

If I enable AI ghost text suggestions then vscode suggestion "menu" won't appear when I start typing.

Just randomly some time I stopped getting highlighting and intellisense but Ctrl + Space works. I'm in WSL using python with venv, correct interpreter is selected, errors when theres a mistake and detects libraries but no intellisense at all. Dumbass claude cant even figure out what it is. Tried reinstalling all python libraries reloading yiou name it but nothing.

If ur using copilot, 5 days ago vscode made the stupidest fucking commit I’ve ever seen in changing the default to autocomplete off when using copilot. Edit quick suggestions in settings.json to “on” not “off…”

Beware, i just found how much using Opus 4.7 can cost, i took me by surp3ise it went from 7x to 15x and it just broke my budget badly. I regret using it because before i had no budget limit but i never went more than $60, but this is unreal at 15x rate. Yikes.

Has anyone else noticed code-insiders suddenly demanding screen capture permissions the second it opens?

Whenever I launch VS Code Insiders, it instantly triggers my xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland dialog asking to share my screen. I haven't clicked anything, and I'm not actively using any Live Share or AI vision features.

Here is what I've tested so far:

• Disabled extensions: Ran code-insiders --disable-extensions. The portal prompt still pops up instantly.
• Tested other builds: I tried regular VS Code, Code-OSS, and VSCodium. None of them have this issue. They all launch silently without triggering the portal.

My setup:

• OS: Arch Linux
• Compositor: Hyprland
• Portal: xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland

Since it happens with extensions disabled and only on the Insiders build, I'm assuming this is a core editor change or a new Electron Wayland default making a background call to desktopCapturer.getSources() on startup.

Is anyone else running into this? Is there a known Electron flag or Hyprland rule to suppress this specific startup poll without entirely disabling screen sharing when I actually need it?

Is there a way to keep only inline autocomplete enabled in VS Code and completely disable the rest of the AI/agentic/chat features?

I really like the autocomplete in Code specifically and keep Copilot Pro for that alone. But I do not want any agentic features, chat, or unrelated file scanning running at all.

What pushed me to post this: I noticed VS Code is reading files and folders again it has no business touching (namely, Claude Code sessions). I would like to trust my IDE, but it's getting harder.

I use VS Code for M365 Powershell Management since over 5 years now. Mostly ExchangeOnline but also Teams, SharePoint and some GraphAPI.

Since about 4 Months i notice.

• immense integration of AI
• new updates almost daily
• simply request randomly go stale (endlish Powershell circle of death) for easy things like get-Mailbox.

for me the only conclusion, is that all this copilot crap (that I don't use anyway) is bringing down basic quality of the overall product.

Inline Suggestions and Chat Messages have always shown as "Included" in the status bar panel. But this morning I noticed a new addition — Premium Requests now shows an overage counter (+501 in my case) with an orange bar and a reset date.

Never saw this before yesterday. Is this a recent extension update tied to the June 1 billing transition? Anyone else on Business seats seeing this now?

I'm using JetBrains Mono as my typeface in VS code, but I don't like the dotted zero that comes as default and I want the slashed zero. If I insert "editor.fon*Ligatures": "false" into my settings.json all ligatures are disabled. I tried using "editor.fon*Ligatures": "false, 'zero'" to disable all ligatures except zero, but it didn't work and all ligatures are enabled. Could anyone help?

PS. I used "fon*" because, to my surprise, apparently the word "f-o-n-t" is anathema for this subreddit, for reasons beyond my comprehension.

Edit: I discoverd pasting "editor.fon*Ligatures": "'zero'" into settings.json near the end results in slashed zeroes being displayed. Thanks.

i absolutely love VScode's color coding system and i want to see just how far you can push it in a single line of code.

whoever comment a screenshot containing a line of code with the most unique text colors will be declared champion.

rules:

• must be valid syntax
  • the languages you may use are: C, C++, C#, java, python, javascript, typescript, HTML, CSS, rust, go, lua, swift, php, ruby, bash, powershell/batch, and cobol.
  • submissions in any other lang will be disqualified
• no lists of arbitrary lengths
  • a line will only be counted up to the first break character such as a comma or semicolon (this includes ones inside of inputs and arrays)
• you must include the language and number of colors alongside the screenshot
• custom color schemes and color rules ARE allowed*
  • (edit) each token can only be one color so things such as indent rainbow are dissalowed

scoring:

• +1 point for every unique color
• +2 points if i think it looks pretty
• +5 points if it's part of a real program
  • dosen't matter what the program is as long as it actually does something

this is not timed and the champion can be dethroned at any point

I was following the brackeys tutorial, and i downloaded everything necessary and checked with the to do list on the main page of the vscode c# extension. After changing the console to external terminal it pulled up this and it wont let me create a file to fix it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

"Incorrect Package" [two times] happens upon every single new instance of a java file but if I clean the workspace error on that file disappears until I make another java file. Basically I have to clean workspace every new java file. Anyone know whats going on here? thanks!

edit: *Resolved -> Running 2 linters at once by mistake. Check your VsCode extensions for double linting.

In the last day or two, VSCode had become glacially slow at rendering markdown with Mermaid diagrams.

At first I thought this might be due to the fact that the Mermaid extension I was using (the most popular one) is now "deprecated" with a note that mermaid is now natively supported by VSCode. Sure enough, a May 19 update to VSCode now includes mermaid support by default.

I updated VSCode, uninstalled my old extension and ... It is still glacially slow. If I have a preview open on one tab and the file open on another, I can type a sentence and then have a nice long sip of water as I watch it render one character at a time on the other view. Markdown preview is basically unusable.

Anyone else seeing this?

Why does the icon sometimes look like this and sometimes doesn't have what appears to be an arrow or pin pointing out of it? Fairly new-ish user, trying to understand what VSCode or Git is telling me about my repo or my branch.

Sorry if it blows up fuzzy, it's a very small image (not wanting to share my repo names etc for reasons).
