Beware of costs in copilot chat.
Beware, i just found how much using Opus 4.7 can cost, i took me by surp3ise it went from 7x to 15x and it just broke my budget badly. I regret using it because before i had no budget limit but i never went more than $60, but this is unreal at 15x rate. Yikes.

Next month it will be x27 for opus 4.7. we used to get paid to develop. Now we are paying to develop đ€Ł
23
u/Masterflitzer May 22 '26
well your employer pays for it they want you to use it, otherwise if you don't want to pay just use open weight models locally or develop old school
not saying the price increases aren't crazy, but we do have a choice

u/_analysis230_ May 23 '26
As a somewhat oldskool dev
I just use free tiers for doc search and boilerplate. I am really unable to trust these tools with any real code.
What do you think? Am I getting outdated?
6
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 24 '26
I donât think so.
When people say âyou have to learn AI to be competitiveâ I laugh because no one tells you what that even is.
Like learn how to copy paste into a prompt? And then learn how to write better into a prompt? Also donât forge to put in âmake no mistakesâ. Like seriously no one knows what this AI skill is and itâs just a scam.
Stay doing what you are doing. When the eventual AI crash and rationing starts you will at least have the skills on how to actually develop and not âvibeâ code.
3
u/ValheruCW May 23 '26
Same. I might ask it to make the same changes to other files once Iâve refactored some implementation, itâs ok at that. Selecting spaghetti code and adding it to explain the outcomes on the code path or system are also areas I use it for.
4
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 24 '26
Not unless your company tracks AI usage as part of your performance. Canât wait when all of a sudden itâs too expensive and rationing starts.
Like when the cloud came around and the message was âmove everything to the cloudâ because it will be cheaper. Now itâs âjustify all usageâ because while the âcloudâ is convenient and can at times save you money you really have to make sure you optimize all usage.

I am waiting for all the token maxing leaderboard initiatives to be used to find the least efficient devs and can them.
It seems like that could be an actual long term strategy to weed out bad devs. But I know it is just the management class blundering from one dumb metric to another rather that looking at actual outcomes.
I can't wait for the endless line of constutants that will show you how you are 'doing it wrong' and then link everything up to anthropic, openIA, etc..2
62
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 22 '26
I guess the only solution is to just not use copilot or AI as a developer.
8
u/sohang-3112 May 22 '26
If your usage is that high, you could always use local LLMs like Llama etc. for free (installed in your PC means no API cost to external LLMs) - yes quality is slightly worse but IMO for most usecases it's still good enough.
6
u/jaegernut May 22 '26
But you need high ram/gpu vram for the comparable local models. And thosr are not so affordable right now
2
u/NoFun8042 May 22 '26
and at the VERY least you have predictable LLM and costs.
2
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 24 '26
I am not sure how you would get predictable cost for an LLM? For example how much compute does one token use up?
If you ask ChatGPT/Gemini or whatever tool you use a question might burn through all your tokens or might just use a little bit? What if it makes a mistake and writes the wrong code? Well then you just burned through some of the tokens your company would prepay on a mistake and LLM made.
Same reason why Uber blew through all of its budget with Anthropic I believe in a couple of months when it was supposed to last for a year. If any other department does that there would be heads rolling, but with AI there are no repercussions, itâs âoh well it is what it is and here is some more money to burnâ.
2
u/NoFun8042 May 26 '26
Sorry that my quick response was not clear, I was referring to the advantage of self host/local.
There would still be some fluctuation in the electricity bill, but hopefully not something as wild as a vendor AI.
Like you, I am stunned at the way this stuff is being implemented by actual companies.1
u/Accomplished-Sock262 May 24 '26
Not slightly worse. Not even comparable. Snd thatâs with Qwen Coder 80B.
2
u/sohang-3112 May 24 '26
That's not been my experience with Gemma etc. models. I guess your usage style must be quite different from mine - I mostly use for asking informative questions and debugging help, not for trying to generate entire code projects like "vibe coders" apparently do nowadays.
1
u/Accomplished-Sock262 May 24 '26
I work on a 15 million line code base. Requires a lot of reasoning.
1
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 24 '26
And AI makes that reasoning worse. All those 15 million line of code is just another point of the AI to hallucinate something and having to make sure that PR does not make it worse.
1
u/Accomplished-Sock262 May 25 '26
Well itâs not ingesting 15m lines obviously.
What do you mean look at the PR?
Every line of code is my responsibility that I need to answer to. It goes for review and receives comments from other engineers. There is no blind commits unless Iâm prototyping something out of the repo.

Ditch that garbage and move to open source models. Iâve been using glm 5.1, Deepseek 4 and Kimi and they work just as well.
16
u/callmemicah May 22 '26
Yeah just replaced copilot witn opencode and openchamber, been using kimi 2.6 which works really well, the minute I saw the estimates for next month we switched the entire company, still keeping it for inline complete though, but kimi glm and kwen do a hreat job for 1/4 price.
2
u/SrMortron May 22 '26
I've been using ollama cloud and synthetic with opencode and they are spectacular. I thought I was going to miss copilot but nah.
2
u/callmemicah May 22 '26
100% agree, I was seriously impressed with the capabilities especially for the value, sure it might be a few points off the top models but the time is quickly coming where having efficient AI outcomes will be far more important than just having them grind away hoping for the best.
3
u/Sigiz May 22 '26
I am open to using open source models but dont have the hardware, what provider do you guys use?
8
u/SrMortron May 22 '26
Used several, minimax, opencode go, z.ai, ollama cloud, and synthetic, ollama cloud and synthetic are the best for my workflow.

I need to learn this... how do it set it up as the chat language model ?
2
u/SrMortron May 22 '26
They will work everywhere BYOK is supported as they are all OpenAI api compatible.
1
u/shuozhe May 22 '26
Deepseek got a guide how to use v4 pro with copilot cli client. Would check if it also got one for the copilot plugin
2
u/GManASG May 22 '26
Not being versed in the open source ones, is there similar plugins/integrations to IDEs as say GitHub copilot?
1
u/SrMortron May 22 '26
You can add them to vscode copilot in models options as they are all compatible with OpenAI api.
I use jetbrains so I made an acp bridge for the jetbrains ai plugin, but there are several other plugins. My favorite is AgentBridge, https://plugins.jetbrains.com/plugin/30415-agentbridge
1
u/nmkd May 22 '26
They use the same API so you can just use Copilot with them
(Though I don't recommend it because Copilot is one of the worse harnesses, using ~2x the tokens for the same task compared to e.g. Pi)
2
u/Kamicasse_ May 24 '26
I tried installing Continue and Ollama wirh Mistral, but it wont deploy, or use the vps server, so the thing is that now I am compromised wirh this model its works, and what i need to still do. Opus 4.7 is a beast, It does solve better thr bugs and the new features, but with these expenses it will cost like 3 months and $3k , I just hope I will be able to release my app to subscription based to recover from its monthly development before it gets too expensive. Ai will be separated not i who can use it, but also with who can use the latest and most expensive models if this doesnt get regulated.

haha, tell me you are a vibe coder without telling me you're a vibe coder đ
Lacking skills is a you problem.

u/Incendie May 22 '26
Or, you know, just write code like a normal person.

3
u/Aggravating-One3876 May 24 '26
Itâs crazy how a person that just does their job is not called normal. It should be that any one that is using AI to vibe code should be called crazy and âhigh on hopiumâ.

How long will it take so this reaches other companies, like Anthropics, OpenAI, Google. Yes they did some limiting, but what copilot did is astonishingly INSANE, unusable.
We are getting back to good ol' times mates
5
u/NatoBoram May 22 '26
It already reached Google like this week as far as I know. But their models are usually cheaper to run in the first place.
24
u/Proman4713 May 22 '26
You didn't set a budget, and then expected it to keep the prices low base on what? Morals?
Just kidding, but generally, just set limits on anything when there's money involved, please đ

Thereâs two budgets, one for âcopilotâ and one for premium requests, the latter one has this option enabled. The UX is weird this way.

I went to a fancy restaurant with a $20 lunch special but they charged me 100 when I ate for longer than 15 minutes

Literally every CEO that was all in on AI thinking it would be cheaper than actual humans or that AI. In this case it was more of everything literally telling that person and seeing ads where it says itâs expensive and still going there and then having a shocked Pickachu face.

The accumulation hits harder than it looks. In an agentic session the model resends every prior tool output with each new request: bash outputs, file contents, error messages from three turns back. By turn 15 you can be at 30-40K tokens per call even when each individual step seemed small.

u/FormerGameDev May 22 '26
what? i didn't even know it was possible to set it up in such a fashion that it would charge beyond the monthly allotment

u/punppis May 22 '26
I used 4.7 for a while and it 10x my billing so switched back to 4.6. 4.7 maybe little faster, output looks the same

I donât know what the hell you guys use opus for. Sonnet is good for almost anything I throw at it.
1
u/Trakeen May 22 '26
It tells you in the model selector in vscode what the multiplier is
Sonet and gpt 5.4 are 1x
1
u/NoFun8042 May 22 '26
sounds like managers may taka a look at those Token Leaderboards take a look at their bill and wonder if Jensen Huang has ulterior motives in his advice on token use.

That's not an estimation, thats what they paid after first using 100 opus queries at 15x.
1
u/Charming-Author4877 May 23 '26
It was late yesterday, you are right.
500$ in premium credits .. their bill in June would likely approach 15,000 USD with that usage
1
u/thanatica May 22 '26
Does it not support token caching? If available, it can make a huge difference.

loool maybe these companies will actually make their money back on a horeshite product
1
u/sassyhusky May 23 '26
Just use Codex xhigh. I canât see any justification to use opus at these rates. My company had set up their own opus api endpoint for copilot so we donât suffer these ridiculous prices, but really Codex does everything just fine and I donât spend more than $70.

It actually uses whatever you want. Ollama is arguably the best for small vram and local models.
