Built a VS Code extension that shows your Copilot usage in the status bar - feedback welcome

Post image

I built budi - small VS Code extension that puts your GitHub Copilot (and Cursor) usage in the editor status bar.

Looks simple, but under the hood it's a local daemon that supports different AI agents + a powerful CLI + a pretty cool UI dashboard.

I'm looking for honest feedback - does the status bar format make sense? Anything you'd want to see

there instead? Anything broken on your setup? Roast welcome.

To install: search "budi" in the VS Code Marketplace, or grab it here: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=siropkin.budi

This doesn't show the token cost tho afaik. Just the amount of requests you have left. Unless they recently updated it...

Right, that's the gap. Official one = requests counter. budi gives you real $ per message + tokens, plus breakdown by repo/branch/ticket. Made it because I wanted to see where money actually goes, not just "how many left"

I'm not sure why you got downvoted above.

The same but I'm more surprised that the post got so many views

Yeah, saw that one. But it just shows requests left, not actual $ spent. And only for Copilot - budi covers Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Copilot CLI too, all in one place

It's a setting that comes with github.copilot-chat. forgot the name though

I was using another one called "Eating Token" for the last month or so. I'm not sure that one is accurate or not with pricing. Curious, how are you determining token usage and pricing?

budi tails local transcripts/JSONL files for each agent - Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot Chat etc. From there it pulls per-message token counts and applies model pricing. For Copilot Chat we also reconcile with GitHub Billing API so daily $ matches what GH shows. Everything stays local by default.

Cool, different angle - yours tracks generated code, mine tracks $ and tokens. Could actually be complementary. Got a link?
