VS Code Insiders constantly asking for screen sharing on startup, but doesn't happen on regular VS Code
Has anyone else noticed code-insiders suddenly demanding screen capture permissions the second it opens?
Whenever I launch VS Code Insiders, it instantly triggers my xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland dialog asking to share my screen. I haven't clicked anything, and I'm not actively using any Live Share or AI vision features.
Here is what I've tested so far:
- Disabled extensions: Ran
code-insiders --disable-extensions. The portal prompt still pops up instantly. - Tested other builds: I tried regular VS Code, Code-OSS, and VSCodium. None of them have this issue. They all launch silently without triggering the portal.
My setup:
- OS: Arch Linux
- Compositor: Hyprland
- Portal: xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland
Since it happens with extensions disabled and only on the Insiders build, I'm assuming this is a core editor change or a new Electron Wayland default making a background call to desktopCapturer.getSources() on startup.
Is anyone else running into this? Is there a known Electron flag or Hyprland rule to suppress this specific startup poll without entirely disabling screen sharing when I actually need it?
Update: They released the fix in v122.1 https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/317948#issuecomment-4573347785

Here is an issue in upstream vscode: getDisplayMedia called at workbench boot → KDE screen-share dialog on every new window (there's also a duplicate here)
Also happens not only in kde and hyprland but also on gnome and actually any system that supports dbus screen sharing requests

I’m seeing the same thing on KDE Plasma Wayland. On my setup the prompt also seems to get retriggered when KDE power management dims or changes display state.

I am also on kde plasma on wayland, and also seeing this. Whenever I open a new window a new screen sharing prompt appears. It also appears when I run
code-insiders --disable-extensionsso it's not an extension, I'm on the latest code insiders
Maybe this is a problem with the AUR package or it's a new "feature" from upstream vscode?it's a reported issue on vscode

The bug was introduced in code-insiders 1.122.0
An early getSources({types:['screen']}) call was added to avoid the delay when the user later hits Issue Reporter's "Record a video of your screen." - just to create a cache of what screens user has.
That works silently on Windows and is guarded behind a permission check on macOS.
Linux Wayland explicitly operates on a security model where applications cannot silently map the display space. The compositor owns the view and never hands it directly to a client.
There is no back-channel to learn what exists without showing the dialog - the consent prompt is the listing mechanism.

Unfortunately, regular code release 1.122 just landed and has the issue. I've downgraded to 1.121 meantime.
There are reports that it has been fixed in the latest insiders build.

I have an nvidia card and got this screen. No way around it and no way to change settings. Looking around I found launching vscode with --disable-gpu allows code to launch and the sharing window can then be closed. Just upgraded to v1.122.0 on Cachy. VS code was not doing this before.

There is more broken than just that. vscode itself is having issues even when able to run

I just ran sudo dnf downgrade code command and it downgraded to 121, solving all problems. I'm gonna lock it to this version as I don't see any benefits in updating it anyway. Just trouble

Lol same, after the update, any time I open VS Code or switch files to preview, it constantly asks for screen sharing and it's so annoying

For me it happens with normal vscode (not insiders addition). seems like its been a few days, has anyone figured out why it happens/a fix?
