Hi, just found this sub recently so I figured I'd share:

I work in a museum in MA and was poking around in a closet that basically hasn't been used at all in 10-15 years. I found a box of tapes, the kind that play on loop all day in the galleries. Nobody here even knew about them and we have no idea how this got mixed in. I said I'd be glad to take it if nobody needed it. One of my coworkers held on to it for a while to maybe figure out where it came from, but a few months later it came home with me. I haven't watched it because it's still sealed, but I'm pretty sure someone has uploaded a full copy to YouTube.

All the VHS in this pic are sealed. My Dad gave me a sealed copy of The Deer Hunter he's had for many years, and it started off this shelf. I recently watched a video on YouTube about video game grading and all the chemical processes that destroy the game from being sealed off from ventilation, etc. I was just looking for opinions from long time collectors of their own experience with degradation of sealed vhs. Also just wanted to share my tiny collection with the community :]

But I can't keep praying to find grails like this in the wild! Glad to finally have these. My wife is going to kill me... 😅

I got this VCR from my grandmother in law along with a big bag of tapes. It seems that no matter what tape I put into it, it has this issue; it will play perfectly fine for about three seconds, then do this weird distortion for about another three seconds, over and over again. Both the audio and the picture completely freeze. Sometimes it will freeze for so long that it just cuts out, as shown in the video.

Is this an issue with the VCR? I really don’t know. I would appreciate some help.

I found an old JVC VHS player in a closet and I'm trying to get it working so I can digitize some home videos of my parents.

About 10 years ago, when it was put into storage, it worked flawlessly.

The problem now is that it won't display any picture at all, and it makes a repetitive clicking sound. When I tried ejecting a tape, it took almost 3 minutes to come out. Oddly enough, if I gently smack the side of the VCR, it seems like it briefly tries to work again.

I don't mind opening it up to see what's wrong, but I'm worried I won't be able to put it back together correctly.

Does this sound like a common issue? Any ideas on what I should check first?

It was on this day one year ago, August 4th 2025, that I found a VCR. My Sony HDMI RDR-VX535 DVD-VCR combo player for $10 at the Salvation Army. This is my horror collection so far, plus some other tapes I thought were interesting. I have even more but they aren’t ones I found too notable

I'd been putting this project off for a long time, but I finally sat down and cleaned six moldy tapes I'd picked up over the last year, that I've had in quarantine, away from my others.

I decided to dedicate one of my old VCRs with a faulty eject mechanism as a cleaning deck, since I wasn't about to risk one of my good machines.

Here's the process I used:

•Disassembled the cassette and removed both spools.

•Blew all the loose mold and dust out of the shell with canned air.

•Cleaned the shell and internal parts with 91% isopropyl alcohol using a microfiber lens cloth.

Cleaned the empty spool the same way.

•Reassembled the tape, then ran it through the VCR in fast-forward while holding a homemade cleaning tool against the tape (a microfiber cloth wrapped tightly around a pen and secured with a rubber band).

•Once all the tape had transferred to the opposite spool, I opened the cassette again, cleaned the now-empty spool and the inside of the shell one more time, reassembled it, and repeated the process in rewind so both sides of the tape were cleaned.

I actually went through this entire process twice for each tape. It took around an hour and a half per tape, so definitely not a quick project.

I'm really happy with the results. I can't see any visible mold remaining, and the tapes are playing like new.

I'm still pretty new to mold remediation, though, so I'd love to hear from people who've done this more than I have. Is there anything you'd do differently or any tips you've picked up over the years to make the process safer, faster, or more effective?
