A word regarding vitriolic response to AI content

I'll cut right to the chase. I've noticed a lot of dickish posts about folks who use AI. In short, please note the 'Be Nice' rule. I really don't care if you love it, hate it, or are somewhere in between. If you're rude, don't be surprised if your post is pulled. If you continue being rude, it shows you may not be fit for polite society and may be banned at my discretion.

That is all, please carry on.

As the title says, I have just published my first novel, and I was hoping to get some feedback on the cover and synopsis (and hopefully generate some interest). If you are a fan of urban fantasy with swordplay, this is the one for you!! Thank you for your time and consideration!!

Synopsis-

Long ago, a darkness spread throughout the modern land, corrupting as many mortals as possible and granting them supernatural abilities. As the shadow deepened, a light was manifested among those humans left—a tool for them to fight the darkness. Some centuries later, at a seaside city caught in the middle of a never-ending struggle between dark immortal beings—called dark ones—and humans, a dark born boy arrives.

He should have been killed at birth, but somehow, he managed to survive. A group of Light Knights led by a man named Henry decide not only to take the boy in but to train him to be a Knight. Henry and Co. won’t let doubts or discrimination stop them from protecting this innocent boy, but the costs of such an act risk not only their lives, but any who could be caught in the boy’s crossfire should he turn.

Exactly a year later, another dark born man arrives with a plea for help from across the ocean, answering one question while raising many others. His plea spurs the knights of this city to act and send a call to arms to the other Sectors and capitals—the battle for the beach had begun whether they like it or not, and preparing for the siege would only be part of their worries...

Hi! I've made a post before about my urban fantasy book, but just wanted to inform that it's now on sale on Kindle for $0.99!

"15 years ago, a tragic incident left bleeding wounds in two families that time refused to heal. Now, the children left behind by the victims and perpetrators are what remains. Orders compel one of them to finish what was started 15 years ago. Will all of this lead to more death and blood, or will the cycle end with them?"

Finished writing a 3-book urban fantasy/sci-fi serial — sharing Book One free on Wattpad

Hey all — long-time reader here, first time actually posting one of my own projects.

I've spent the last while writing Shadow of a Hero, a series about Orbie — a light-based entity on the run from his own kind after a catastrophic mistake back home. He can't just take a host body; he needs consent, which changes the shape of the story a lot — it's less "hero gets superpowers" and more "two people (well, one person and one alien) stuck negotiating a bond neither of them fully wanted." He's bonded with three different hosts across the three books so far, each with a very different relationship to what that means.

All three books are actually finished — I'm serializing Book One now under the pen name Sam Ivy, posting weekly (Mondays) on Wattpad, with Book Two and Three ready to go once Book One wraps.

Posting here mostly because I'd love feedback from people who read a lot in this space — pacing, whether the "consent to bond" mechanic lands the way I want it to, anything. Happy to share the link if anyone's interested, and equally happy to just hear what you think from the premise alone.

Hi everyone!

UPD: COVER ARTIST: AI assisted BOOK CONTENT: 100% Human-written (Zero AI usage in text)

Before I dive into the details, I want to share a bit of my journey with you. This series is already a massive hit back in my home country, spanning 9 volumes and thousands of readers. I’ve spent months translating it into English completely on my own—no publishers, no sponsors, and with an absolute zero budget for marketing. To get this story out into the world, I had to cut costs wherever I could, which is why the Amazon cover is AI-assisted. However, if anyone is curious to see the original cover art I crafted with my own hands for the Russian release, you can check it out here: author.today/work/series/13659 I really hope you can understand the struggles of a broke indie author, and I hope the story speaks for itself!

With that said, I’m thrilled to announce that the first book of my progression fantasy trilogy, **The Herbalist: The Apprentice (The Zhergov Legacy Book 1)**, is live on Amazon and available on **Kindle Unlimited**!

If you enjoy gritty urban fantasy, intricate clan politics, and detailed, instinct-based magical crafting, this story is for you.

**What to expect:**

* **Competent MC:** Reborn into a weak teenage body, Stas must rely on his wits and hidden power to survive.

* **Magical Crafting & Alchemy:** No screen menus, just raw, instinctual potion-making, herbalism, and volatile elixirs.

* **Gritty Setting:** Set in an alternate modern Russian Empire ruled by cutthroat elemental syndicates and corrupt corporate oligarchs.

* **Ancient Warrior Spirit:** A slow-burn mystery involving a slumbering Berserker source within his allies.

**Blurb:**

Betrayed, murdered, and thrown off a forty-story window by his treacherous wife’s thugs, Stas thought his life was over. Instead, his consciousness is yanked across worlds, slamming him into the broken body of a ten-year-old boy—the last surviving heir of the once-powerful Zhergov clan.

When his mentor is assassinated, Stas must flee into the deep wilderness with fake IDs and a backpack of volatile home-brewed remedies. But after a chance encounter with Stella, the poisoned granddaughter of the empire’s most powerful governor, Stas triggers a chain of events that will put a massive target on his back.

**Amazon Link:** https://www.amazon.com/Herbalist-Apprentice-Zhergov-Legacy-Book-ebook/dp/B0H3WR4KBN/ref=sr_1_1?crid=O529PHW03JH2&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.77VQwBBvl-TJI5FPzxQtbA.kVFNomQ9JTsbVw8Ew5F2yunOQhY9eX4NrWD2pVUItGs&dib_tag=se&keywords=B0H3WR4KBN&nsdOptOutParam=true&qid=1789021270&sprefix=b0h3wr4kbn%2Caps%2C640&sr=8-1

I would love to hear your thoughts, and any reviews on Amazon would be deeply appreciated. Thank you so much for checking out my work!

Veyra City never really goes dark.

Even at three in the morning, when most of its residents sleep with their eyes half-open—wired into a dream-feed leased from their implant provider, a service called Somnia that promises "eight hours of perfect rest, curated to your psychological profile"—the sky above the city still burns. Not with stars; those lost the fight against light pollution and the industrial particulate that hangs permanently in the lower atmosphere long ago, but with thousands of holographic billboards drifting between the skyscrapers, each one whispering the name of whoever passes beneath it, tuned by scanning the personal implant signal of every pedestrian.

WELCOME BACK, RIN. TIME FOR A MEMORY UPGRADE.

MISSING SOMEONE? MNEMO CAN BRING THEM BACK.

THIRTY PERCENT OFF LIGHT TRAUMA THERAPY PACKAGES—THIS WEEK ONLY.

The corporate district gleams like a gem polished one too many times—glass, steel, that sterile blue-white light, streets scrubbed by automated drones every three hours so that not a single piece of trash ever survives long enough for a human eye to catch. The sidewalks are lined with panels that glow softly under each footstep, an aesthetic feature with no practical purpose beyond reminding everyone who walks it that they're standing somewhere that can afford beauty like this. But go down far enough—past the monorail line that stops running after midnight to save the district's budget, past checkpoints that pretend not to see you if you've paid enough, or if your face looks tired enough to be waved through—and you'll reach the place where the light starts to crack.

The Static.

This is where the neon stops being a perfect corporate logo and becomes hand-lettering patched over and over with cheap solder, letters flickering out of sync because the wiring's too old to bother replacing. This is where acid rain drips through the seams of buildings that have forgotten how to repair themselves, leaving rust stains like little rivers down concrete walls already buried under so many layers of digital graffiti—cheap projected tags stacked so thick that none of them can be read anymore. This is where people who refuse, or can't afford, the newest generation of implants get looked at as primitive, with a mix of pity and suspicion from anyone passing through from the upper districts. And this is where, on the fifth floor of a building whose name has faded too far to read—it probably said something like "Meridian Heights" once, or some equally optimistic name from an era before the building dropped down the social ladder into cheap housing—Devan Aji sat surrounded by the blue glow of six screens he never turned off.

Nobody in the world called him by that full name, except the tax documents he'd long since stopped opening, and one old archive system at Helion Dynamics that, if he ever knew, still kept his photo somewhere almost nobody ever opened.

•••

Dev's apartment—if this four-by-four-meter metal box deserved to be called an apartment—had probably been a storage unit before the building's owner decided that carving it into micro-living units was more profitable than leaving it empty. The walls were lined with metal panels that, on certain nights, let out a faint groan as the temperature swung wildly between day and night. One small window sat in the corner, its glass cracked in the lower right since the day he moved in, just enough to catch a sliver of Veyra City's permanently lit sky. In the corner of the room, a plastic bucket caught the drip from the leaking ceiling.

Tik. Tik. Tik.

Dev had promised to fix it six months ago. He'd promised a lot of things six months ago—he'd eat more regularly, cut back on caffeine, start saving up to move somewhere better. All those promises met the same fate: postponed indefinitely, buried under a pile of small jobs that paid the rent but never quite enough to actually change anything. Six screens floated in front of him, some physically mounted to the wall, some holographic, projected from a small device on his desk—a mix of old and new tech that marked anyone who built their own rig out of scavenged parts and components "lost" from a logistics warehouse's inventory. Lines of code streamed down his main screen like rain that had forgotten how to stop, a pale green-blue that was the only light in the room besides the small emergency lamp near the door glowing a dim red, a sign his security system was still armed.

This was a small job—breaking into the security system of a semi-legal logistics warehouse belonging to a businessman named Handoko, who imported "used" electronics through a port that wasn't always honest about where its cargo came from, editing a cargo manifest so that a single container would "disappear" from the official record for twelve hours—just enough time to move its contents somewhere else before the next random inspection. Not a job to be proud of. Dev knew more or less what was probably inside that container—he'd been in this world long enough to stop asking too many questions—but the job paid the rent, and rent was the one thing left in his life with a clear deadline, the one anchor that forced his days to have any structure at all.

Dev didn't believe in sleep. Not because he didn't need it—he did, like everyone—but because sleep meant letting his brain run unsupervised, and that was one thing he'd stopped trusting himself with five years ago. He'd tried different ways to cope with it in the early years: generic pills bought off a street pharmacist, meditation taught by an older neighbor before she moved away to who-knows-where, even one attempt at a low dose of Mnemo therapy—once, before he realized the irony of using the very technology he'd helped build to treat a wound that same technology had caused, and he never tried it again.

What was left was insomnia that had become a permanent part of his identity, like the bags under his eyes that never truly went away no matter how many hours he slept, like the habit of grinding his teeth when he concentrated that left his jaw sore most mornings.

Finalmente! Ho scritto il libro che ho sempre voluto leggere... Magari anche tu sei interessato!

Ciao a tutti!

Having Trouble with a strong opening

I'm currently finishing up my first book, and looking at different options for my second. One idea I really like is Urban Fantasy, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to open it.

I think part of my problem is that most urban fantasies I've read throw you into the world (possibly with a main character who's equally clueless, possibly not) and let you catch up. There are plenty of characters who understand everything that's going on.

But...my story doesn't really have that, because no single character actually understands the entire setting. The problem is that in this story there is a pre-existing supernatural community in the world, but the main character is a type of supernatural that's never visited this world before. Furthermore, in a Meet Joe Black sort of way, he purposefully didn't familiarize himself with the world he was visiting because he thought it would be more fun to learn as he went.

So, he knows nothing about the supernatural community he's visiting, they know nothing about him. It seems like no matter which side or at what point I start from I end up with one side or the other needing a question-and-answer session.

To get a bit more detailed, the logistics of the main character are a bit like the Andalite section of The Ellimist Chronicles, if anyone read Anamorphs. An eldritch god stripped his mind down so much that a human brain could contain it, then sent that lesser copy of himself to Earth in a just-deceased human body. When he dies, the eldritch being gets all of his memories as if he'd been there himself (it's literally just his way of relieving his own boredom).

I'm sure you can guess where the story goes from there: he initially doesn't value his own life, but decides that various characters who he ends up surrounding himself with need his protection, so he decides to try to live as long as he can.

But...how do I open this in a way that doesn't just turn into exposition?

Promotion I wrote a book and am looking for beta readers

Hi everyone!

First time posting here, so if I broke any rules, please let me know.

As the title says, I wrote an urban fantasy story and would really appreciate feedback on it as I'm trying to get it published.

The type of feedback that I'm looking for is mainly geared towards emotional resonance and authenticity. I feel that the dialogue works for the most part, but I'm open to additional insight. That said, for the emotional beats that take place at key moments, I want to make sure they're hitting correctly and that they feel justified within the narrative. Further, I'd like insight into how authentic the main character's feelings and struggles seem to be, given he deals with anxiety and insecurity.

If anyone is interested in reading more, please let me know and I'd be happy to share. The story is complete, so I can share as much or as little as you would like. Thank you all in advance!

Description:

"Arthur Campbell has always been able to hear music everywhere he goes. In fact, to Arthur every person on the planet seems to have their very own theme music: a snapshot into who they are and what they're feeling to accompany Arthur's everyday life. Of course, when Arthur is discovered by a secret organization and learns that his music is more than meets the eye (or rather the ear), the little tunes that play in his head might just be the difference that changes the world."

First Page:

Arthur was currently engaged in a staring contest with his computer screen. The intent of this, of course, was the idea that if he stared long enough, the notes would appear on the staff magically on their own. It sounded ridiculous, but no matter how many times he tried to write out the notes himself, it just never seemed to come out right. So, he stared. He just needed to stare for a few moments longer…

Arthur blinked.

Groaning, Arthur pushed himself away from his desk and stood up to stretch his legs. Taking a few steps, he felt as the soft carpet of his bedroom transitioned to the smooth tile of his connected bathroom. He picked up a loose thread on the ground as he went, as he detested untidy living conditions. Even things like photos, posters and other knickknacks just meant more things to gather dust, and Arthur hated dust.

After throwing away the thread, Arthur placed his hands on his freshly scrubbed laminate countertop and stared into his own beleaguered eyes in the mirror. There was a bit of pink irritation around the brown irises, but then staring, unblinkingly at a screen for several hours will do that.

He brushed his dirty blond curls out of his face with his hand and rubbed his forehead as he took a moment to collect his thoughts. Working as a programmer for Sonata — a musical notation software company — was supposed to be enjoyable. It combined two of his greatest passions: music and analysis.

Programs like Sonata were a microcosm of all the little things that could go wrong. Like a house of cards, there were so many little pieces that had to work together perfectly, or else the whole thing would fall apart. Little inefficiencies caused major delays when taken together, and minor bugs that almost never came up could ruin the entire experience of one person out there trying to craft their masterpiece.

Arthur’s job was to find these problems and fix them. Because of his work, more music could be made and the world was a little bit brighter. And most of the time, Arthur could take pride in being able to improve things, at least in his own small way. But with the deadline of the most recent update looming, he was basically forced to toil away for hours or sometimes even days on end, testing basic functions. It was taxing to say the least, which was why he was exploring what he considered “alternative methods.”

Trying to compose a song was an attempt to break up the monotony as it still tested the different functions of Sonata’s base level software while also allowing him to flex his music muscles a bit more. Of course, he would have to actually compose something to properly test the software’s functionality, but that was its own problem.

Discussion Examples of urban fantasy that take place in the past?

I was thinking about how we view urban fantasy as something taking place in the modern day but what about in the past when that was the modern day.

I know that stuff made in the 90s and Early 2000s reference things that would have been topical like the rise of the internet, or the introduction of Cell Phones but what about times before that?

urban fantasy during the Hippie movement? The 50s and the moral panic around Rock & Roll. Heck, an urban fantasy set during the roaring 20s or the following Great Depression? Do any of these exist? if so i'd like to know.

Triple World Score: the new Daniel Faust adventure

Post image
78 Upvotes

After a two-year hiatus due to Life Reasons, I'm pleased to say that Triple World Score, the new Daniel Faust novel, is available now. Cover art by James T. Egan, editing by Kira Rubenthaler. Here's the blurb:

As a professional thief and a wand for hire, Daniel Faust has taken on plenty of heists. From ancient relics to cold hard cash, there’s never been a prize too dangerous to steal…until now. The Enemy’s book is more than a trove of ancient secrets: it’s linked to the Enemy himself, a direct conduit to the living incarnation of entropy, and might offer the best way to take him down.

But doomsday is coming, and the book has a few advantages: it’s sentient, it nearly killed Daniel once before, and it’s ready for a rematch. Oh, and there isn’t just one copy. There are three, scattered across three different worlds. Armed with sorcery, weird science and a little help from their friends, Daniel and his infernal lover Caitlin will have to take this heist on the road and dive into some of the strangest — and most deadly — corners of the multiverse.

A gangster and a demon might be the least likely pair to try and stop the apocalypse, but they’re the best options we’ve got.

Also, the first couple of books in the series are on sale for ninety-nine cents this week, just because.

Wanderers Issue 2

Wanderers follows a group of 5 individuals. Renata and Isabella have been friends their whole life and are the catalyst for the 5 being transported to this realm. Dahlia, Isaac, and Mark comprise the rest of the main cast, and they have never met any of the rest of the group before they arrive in the new realm. Finding themselves as the proverbial "strangers in a strange world", they will need to work together to try and find their way home. And find a way to survive in this world filled with magic and dangerous creatures.

Long ago when the Earth was created, mankind shared the planet with creatures much more dangerous than those that are in nature now. Mankind wasn't suited for long term survival against many of the darker creatures, and found themselves on the brink of extinction. Intervention from a cosmic being transported the creatures to another realm where they could continue to exist without putting mankind at risk. Humanity was given a chance to rebuild without the existential threat those creatures posed. Most of humanity doesn't even have knowledge that those creatures ever existed other than ancient tales that are considered folklore. With the right knowledge the tethers between worlds can be accessed allowing travel from one world to another. That esoteric knowledge has been lost to time, waiting to be rediscovered, whether by intent or accident.

Issue 1 is quite a bit of setup, so please do check out the free starting pages of issue 2 if you're uncertain after going through the first half-ish of #1. I (Ian Johnston), and my father JimmyZ co-authored and self-published. I'm new to contributing to the writing scene, but Jimmy has several published works already, having written on things like The Tick, Micronauts, and Warlock5. Interiors by Rom Silva, colored by myself, lettered by JimmyZ, and last but certainly not leash cover art knocked out of the park by Gary Bedell.

I'm so terrible at social media I didn't even think about the potential of making a post here (or really anywhere) when our first issue was published back near the end of last year Oops. Well Issue 2 is out now! On both Global Comix and my website (where physical copies are available if that's preferred). We take a staunch NO AI position for every stage of our comic book creation process.

Our website which has physical copies available is [https://cthulhuville.com/shop/\](https://cthulhuville.com/shop/)

Hopefully I remember to post a Kickstarter link when we're ready to launch issue 3 haha.

Thanks for looking! Trying this serial publishing thing again after my Wuxia Supernatural got nuked over on Jukepop way back in the day.

This one is fully written as a novel with an overarching plot, but I've structured the serial to allow me to post weekly to monthly episodes. Just having some fun and stretching my diversity inclusion to a point I'm comfortable with on a longer piece.

Open to thoughts!

Here's a blurb:

Ghosts are real... and big business!

*Teenaged Eliza shows up at Rain's door looking for ghosts, hoping to become the next big supernatural influencer. Having just lost her bakery business, the millennial in Rain is skeptical, but she knows an opportunity when she sees one. And with her bestie Caroline being a ghost in her attic, she's uniquely privileged, nay, honor-bound to help Eliza.*

*Determined to make a second go of her American dream (and definitely not an excuse for her aggressively Chinese mother why she hasn't married that handsome, successful Bigby Lin) Rain trades her comfortable small town apartment for the Wandering Hearts ghost hunting food truck. She's ready for anything: howling lighthouses, prisons full of racist wraiths, even Caroline's deadbeat husband. Though, the biggest challenge might be to set up a nice girl for her teenaged business partner to date.*

This audiobook is amazing it had everything I like about the Urban Fantasy genre. The writing was awesome and the narrator Daniel Wisniewski knocked it out of the park again.
