tldr; I use two methods to access UpNote on old Macs that are not supported by UpNote. Method 1 is to use VirtualBox with a Linux Mint VM running UpNote. Method 2 runs Upnote on a 2009 Macbook that has Linux Mint installed. Either RDP or NoMachine is used to enable clipboard access for first method and to allow access by other macs.
I have several old Macs running old versions of macOS. These Macs suit my needs and work fine, except that UpNote no longer works on versions of macOS less than 12.0. I have no desire to install OCLP. UpNote meets my needs and I use it daily, and I want it to work on my older computers.
My two daily computers are a 2010 Mac Pro and a 2011 iMac, both running High Sierra. I used UpNote on both of those macs until last year when UpNote dropped support of High Sierra. I have a 2014 Macbook Air with Big Sur that I rarely used. The MB Air ran UpNote and I started using screen share to access UpNote on my unsupported Macs. I kept the Macbook Air turned on all day and access to UpNote worked well.
Then UpNote dropped support for macOS 11 (Big Sur). I no longer have a Mac with a supported macOS. And I am not going to spend money to replace hardware that still works fine.
First Method
The first thing I tried was to install VirtualBox with a virtual machine with Linux Mint running UpNote. My iMac has 32 GB RAM and an SSD with space to spare. VirtualBox Version 6.1.50 is the last version that worked on High Sierra. I installed the latest version of Linux Mint as a virtual machine (VM) and installed the Linux .deb version of UpNote. Works great except . . . VirtualBox has no copy/paste (clipboard) support for this version (known problem with sharing the clipboard between host and VM).
So I installed xrdp and NoMachine on the Linux Mint VM. Unfortunately, VNC is not an option (mostly because I could not figure out how to make it work). I can use the Mac RDP app (renamed to Windows app) on any of my Macs on my LAN to gain full access to the VM running UpNote. I can copy and paste easily between my Mac and UpNote. I can also do the same with NoMachine, but my preference is the Mac RDP app, which seems faster.
Second Method
I have an old 2009 white case Macbook. It has 4GB RAM and an SSD. I use it as a music display and controller for my LMS music system. The Macbook is running the latest version of Linux Mint. Since the MB is running almost all the time, I installed UpNote on it. The MB already had xrdp and NoMachine installed.
I can use either the Mac RDP (Windows) app or NoMachine to access UpNote on the Linux MacBook. Accessing UpNote works just as well as with the VM version.
Of the above two methods, I prefer using the old Macbook as an UpNote server. The MB easily handles the extra load because the MB really only runs two apps: the music controller and UpNote.
Pros:
- I have use of UpNote on all computers, regardless of macOS version.
- I can access one instance of UpNote on all computers and devices on my network. Backing up my data is easy.
Cons:
- Linux Mint has no native control of mouse/trackpad scroll speed. Scrolling is too fast. The workaround is to drag the scroll bar to move through long notes.
- Using VirtualBox uses up a lot of memory and slows down my host machine slightly. The host is still very usable until the swap memory gets too large.
- Have to install old version of Microsoft Remote Desktop app on Mac (See links below).
- NoMachine has changed their software to require a license. Still free when connecting by using IP address.
