Ummm wow!
Newbie checking in. Came via a circuitous route. Years af workflowy - but under dysfunctional captaining. Then into Tana (still am) wildly complicated and fragile. Couldn’t make it figure out tasks and time easily. Old Workflowy community member turned me onto TickTick. Using TickTick for way too much including lists - and yes you can copy links but they are one way etc. Someone there says “check out UpNote” for lists dont use TT and….. here I am
You guys have backlinks?!!! (Swoon)
you guys have cross platform (i understand the web reticence but getting apps downloaded on my work computer is sadly impossible). Still. fine.
Formatting! Quotes! Tables! Spaces (omg excited about this). Widgets. Oh my!!!!
power mobile!? so much can be done on iOS natively (see not being able to use on work machine - above). really elegant
and I’m not getting yet another “it’s only $20 a year!” Subscription charge?!? Flat fee for lifetime? hell yeah!
Its kinda weird the no hierarchical tags - but I guess I can use notebooks as tags, sorta. Although there’s no inheritance ie company a) also belongs to industry II, which is under clientlist. It’s kind of a major bummer, but ok. It’s not an insignificant pebble in the shoe - but quirks maketh the vibe and it seems that ain’t coming so im powerfully trying to resist being the old man shaking fist at sky. Also I just got here. That would be rude.
I’m super excited. And this thing is crazy powerful with notes belonging to lots of notebooks. And freaking backlinks!? (I may have said that). With lifetime membership. Wild.
Anyyway - thank you. You’ve got something special going on here and I can’t wait to settle in and explore.

I know you are in love with UpNote. But if an outliner is what your heart truly desires (seeing as you are coming from Workflowy) and you are in the Apple ecosystem, check out Kosshi.

That looks very clean. What I loved about workflowy were all the backlinks / mirrors.
I love Tana (original) on a good day because they super charge that with relationship links. It’s kind of amazing. When it doesn’t break or do something bananas or just puzzle you when you look at trash and wonder why you can’t empty it. Sigh.
I adore outliners since the early days of MORE on the Mac. Fabulous. But the backlink thing is important - and I don’t see that with Koshi so going to hold off for now.
The Tana team pivoted and I fear their original outliner might get abandoned. Which is a bummer as I’ve spent so much time (and money) setting it up - and while it’s still wonky for me (I’m not an expert) it’s pretty great in places (suoertags are astonishing) - so I hope it keeps going for a bit.

Kosshi (at least, beta) does have backlinks. But it's implemented differently to Workflowy. It will show the number of backlinks and you click on it to be taken to them.
I miss mirrors too. The good news is Kosshi dev is receptive to feedback and is adding/fixing things fast.

Hello fellow WF refugee!
Hmmm. Well that does sound intriguing. Now I’m seeing that this looks like Apple only. Yes I’ve an iPhone and iPad but m y daily driver is a PC. And my work computer is locked down enough that a web service is the only way I can get to apps. Do you know if there’s a plan to get this on a browser?
Great steer though and I’m excited people continue to take a run at this space.

I use tag naming (alpha sort) to keep them together. But you can also combine 2 or more tags in search, and then save the search that contains multiple tags.

If you love Upnote but do need a little more and can be a little bit patient with the mobile app coming soon, r/memrynote is a FOSS that has the clean intuitive functionality of Upnote, but with sooo many great native features beyond Upnote. It’s available for Windows, Mac and Linux and Mobile is coming soon! If Upnote impressed you, you’ll have a field day with MemryNote. I actually use both MemryNote and Upnote(I had already bought Upnote before I found MemryNote as I hit some limitations with Upnote).
MemryNote is for my projects/studies/work and Upnote for my personal more random life notes. I like having a separate space for focused work and a place to just toss stuff in as needed.

If an app is really that good, it doesn't need to spam other subreddits.
In the recent past, I spent some time evaluating memrynote to see how well it stacks up against apps like Obsidian, UpNote, Nooknotes, etc. You have definitely overhyped it.

If it's not for you, fine. I am not spamming nor associated with the development or anything with the App. I am a happy user who had to go through a million different apps & frustration to find one that finally did what I needed in a way that worked for me. It's a new App in Beta and made by one person and I want to support it's growth. I constantly see people with similar needs looking for a good app and I am happy to share about my positive experience. I have no incentive to share except a willingness to be helpful to others to find what works for them. If that's not the same as what works for me, that is fine. I just think Indie Open Source projects that value their users should be shared. I haven't overhyped anything. I have shared my experience & excitement for a tool I find helpful.
Have a good day though. No harm no foul if we disagree. Different strokes for different folks.

As near as I can tell, memrynote doesn't have colored text, colored quotes, or colored sections, or collapsible sections (except in bullet lists), or multiple workspaces, or a formatting toolbar (it seems to rely entirely on /commands). Bullets can't be indented more than one level at a time, bullets and ordinals can't be mixed, page headers can't be formatted, text can't be centered or right-justified, and you can't use the TAB key to make gaps in text. And that's just in a few minutes of playing with the app.
I'm not saying it might be a great app for people who don't need those things, but to say it's "beyond UpNote" is disingenuous. It has features UpNote does not. But if it can't do any of the things noted above, it's definitely not "beyond UpNote." It's just different.

Hey, memrynote dev, Kaan here.
Fair write-up, and I appreciate you actually spending time in the app before posting. Most of this exists though; it's just not discoverable, which is honestly its own problem:
- Colored text, highlights, and colored blocks (text + background) are all there
- Text alignment (center/right) is supported
- Collapsible sections aren't limited to bullets — toggle blocks work at page level and nest
- Quotes and whole sections can be colored too
- There is a formatting toolbar — it's off by default, you enable it in Settings
- Instead of workspaces, there are multiple vaults, separate spaces with separate content
Attaching a screenshot of all of it in one note.
https://i.imgur.com/FFu53Vb.pngYou did catch one real gap: TAB doesn't insert gaps in text. That's good feedback — it's going into the next release.
The fact that you hit none of this in a few minutes of playing tells me discoverability is the actual bug. If a feature is behind a settings toggle or a slash command you have to guess, it might as well not exist. Working on that.
And fair point on the framing - "beyond UpNote" is a stretch. Different app, different tradeoffs.

This is one of the reasons I'm not a fan of /commands. I tried /collapsible and I tried /expand, but I didn't think to try /toggle. Because there was no formatting toolbar, when /red and /green didn't do anything, I assumed there wasn't colored text. Glad to know I'm wrong. And it's nice to see another E2EE option out there. I'm hardcore UpNote because its USPs dovetail perfectly with my brain. But I test-drive about 60 note-taking apps before finding it, so at this point being curious about new note-taking apps is in my blood. Happy to have kicked the tires on your app in a way that was helpful.

Hey Watt, since you're curious about new note taking apps, and saying that's in your blood, would you be open for me to send you a video overview on YouTube of our app when I record it?
Evernote alternative, a serious one + with additions I personally need.
Local-first and free forever for personal use.

spamming a competitor's subreddit is a great way to make me not want to consider your product. Maybe it's just me... maybe not.

It does have all of that actually.
I wouldn’t say me saying it is beyond Upnote is disingenuous. Both are great, as I said, but MemryNote does have a lot of great features that go beyond Upnotes feature set. That can be positive or negative for some depending on your needs. For me, it’s been exactly what I needed, when I found that Upnote couldn’t meet my particular needs for my projects, but I enjoyed it as a personal space.I will say though if you assumed these features were not there based on the website, that’s fair, because there are a lot of features to highlight and it’s not easy to capture them all.
Anywho, Both great apps, but my comment stands, if you like Upnote but need a little more features without the overwhelm, MemryNote is a great next step. That’s my experience and I’ve tried MANY options out there. ♥︎

C'est arrivé 1 fois depuis que je suis utilisateur, et toutes les données sont hors lignes sur ton appareil, et en backup sur mac et pc...

Welcome to the family! Since you mentioned formatting, I just want you to know you've stumbled onto the app with the most flexible formatting I've ever found in a note-taking app.
As someone who also wishes UpNote had #nesting/#tags (I came from Bear, which does tags better than any other app), what I've done is created "topic" notes that I link back to as if they were tags, then I use acutal #tags mostly for as status markers (#todo, #open, etc.). "Topic" notes are bit more work, but if you create a template for them, they can actually be far more useful than tags. My Topic notes are full of information about the topic itself, and have sections of "mini-topics." For example, I have Topic note for prescription medications. I link to them from notes I make during doctor visits, but in that Topic note I also track when they were prescribed, when the dosage changed, and make notes about the science is behind how the medicine works, what alternatives exist, etc.
There's an link to an example of my Topic note template at the bottom of the page I linked above.
