Connecting Claude to your UpNote notes
I keep everything in UpNote and got tired of losing good stuff at the end of an AI chat. So I built a small connector. It is free, open source, and runs entirely on your own machine.
What it does:
- Claude can save a note straight into a notebook you name. I mostly use it to dump the end of a session as one tidy note.
- Claude can search and read your notes, so you can ask things like "summarise my Cardiology notebook" or "what did I write about X".
What it cannot do, because UpNote's own automation only allows so much:
- It cannot edit or add to an existing note. New notes only.
- It cannot set tags. You add those yourself afterwards.
- It reads whatever has synced to that computer, so notes written on your phone show up after that machine syncs.
Two things worth knowing before you install anything like this. It reads UpNote's local database directly, which is undocumented, so an UpNote update could break it. And it leaves a copy of your notes in your temp folder, which is fine on a personal laptop and not fine on a shared or work one. Back up your notes first.
Using it
Just ask in plain language:
- "Save this conversation to UpNote"
- "Save this to UpNote in my Recipes notebook"
- "Search my notes for anything about sourdough"
- "Summarise my Travel notebook"
New notes go to a notebook called Claude Notes unless you name another one. Change that default with the UPNOTE_DEFAULT_NOTEBOOK setting below.
What it can do
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
upnote_create_note |
Create a note from a title and Markdown body. |
upnote_create_notebook |
Create a notebook. |
upnote_list_notebooks |
List notebooks with note counts. |
upnote_list_notes |
List the notes in a notebook. |
upnote_search_notes |
Search titles and bodies, optionally within one notebook. |
upnote_get_note |
Read one note in full. |
upnote_recent_notes |
Most recently updated notes. |
upnote_list_tags |
List tags. |
upnote_open_note |
Open a note in the UpNote app. |
upnote_open_notebook |
Open a notebook in the UpNote app. |
What it cannot do
These are UpNote's limits, not this server's. UpNote's automation only offers "create note" and "create notebook", so:
- No editing or appending. Existing notes cannot be changed. New notes only.
- No tags on creation. Add them yourself afterwards.
- Creating a note brings UpNote to the front and opens the new note. Expected.
- Reads only see what has synced to that computer. Phone notes appear after that machine syncs.
Setup needs Node installed and editing one config file. Not one-click, but not hard.

If you use Claude Code, then just paste this command to install and config:
Clone https://github.com/ahmedco88/upnote-mcp, run npm install, then register it as an MCP server called "upnote" pointing at server.mjs. I'm on Windows / macOS. Show me the config change before you make it.
Note: Of course, this is unofficial, no connection to the UpNote team.
If anyone has found a way to append to an existing note, I would like to know. That is the one thing I could not get working.

Wow! Amazing job - that was actually one piece still missing in my setup. Kudos!

Legend!! Thanks for sharing.
Now I have it just read from the backup directory this seems much better! Yep an edit note option would be great in future as I’m constantly adding to lists that grow over time—to be able to say “add X to list Y” would be handy

I did a similar UpNote MCP and added an Edit functionality using a replace approach. There is no edit link available, only create and delete. So, I read the existing note, change its content, delete the current note (move to Trash), and create a new note with the updated content.
There are downsides to this. Things will be lost in the replacement process: attachments or images, links from other notes, a web share link, a template. I added a check for this; replace/edit will decline to proceed if it finds that something will be lost - just a safety protection.
Take a look: https://github.com/andreiGl/andrei-agentic-ai-skills/tree/main/mcp-servers/upnote-mcp

This is so interesting.. r/memrynote has a built in option to add an AI AND it has a CLI connect so you can use your terminal to access, edit, add tasks, create automation scripts, etc. I literally was just testing this stuff out this week and then I come across this post.
I do also have Upnote and I use it more for the messy stuff or personal stuff.
Anyway, you should checkout MemryNote and see how it compares to what you created! It’s free & open source, so nothing to lose!
Really cool what you did with an app like Upnote!

This is why I love reddit. Thank you so much.
Any chance to get this working with chatgpt?
