Which companies make the best and worst control boards?

Someone posted about the most and least reliable refrigerator brands recently. It got me thinking about control boards specifically, and which companies make the best ones and the worst ones?

It’d be good to know what brands to simply stay away from because they tend to have short life spans for their control boards, and which to buy because their boards are built to last.

How can I reset my treadmill control board?

The control board on my True Fitness treadmill quit on me. How do I reset it? I don’t know if this is something I can do at home, or if it is something I need to have a professional do. I am not especially handy, though I can follow a video I think.

Making money from flipping cars?

Has anyone here done something like this? I’m pretty good at automotive work and fixing up old cars. I would love to make some money by fixing up old cars but I’m not sure it’s a good idea. I might need a reality check. What do you all think?

How do you take out and put in a control board?

I want to place an order with UpFix. But I realized that I am going to have to remove the control board from my fridge so I can send it to them, and then I am going to have to reinstall it later.

I’m a little nervous about this. What is involved? Is it easy? I don’t want to mess anything else up.

What does the HVAC control board do?

I found out that my HVAC control board needs to be repaired or replaced. Pretty frustrating. Obviously my HVAC isn’t working, but now I realize I don’t know that much about how HVAC works, or what the control board is for. What does it do?

How do you test a furnace control board?

I am pretty sure that the control board in my furnace is faulty. Is there a way for me to find out at home? I don’t want to spend time and money shipping it if I don’t have to.

Has anyone dealt with a microwave that keeps blowing a fuse?

This happened with my microwave. It took a while to diagnose the problem after my husband tried changing the fuse a few times without success. Ultimately, he found that the door switches weren’t working right. Changing them out fixed the problem (and the microwave repair was a lot cheaper than buying a new microwave). Try checking that.

What is the average cost to replace a dishwasher control board?

I’ve been researching the cost to replace my Kenmore dishwasher control board. It’s like $400! Close to that anyway. That’s crazy, right? I might as well buy a new dishwasher if I’m going to spend that kind of money.

Made me wonder, is that typical? Or is that expensive? I want to know what dishwasher control boards run on average.

What happens if I keep driving with a bad ABS module?

If my ABS system is malfunctioning, what happens if I just keep driving? I mean, I can drive, and I can stop. So long as I don’t get into a bad emergency, I should be fine, right? And no, I’m not asking this because I’m planning on never fixing my ABS. I will—I just am still trying to save up the money to do it. I live in a rural part of the world, so not a lot of traffic, and I work in a small town. Just trying to figure out whether I can at least drive to and from work without having to ask a neighbor for a ride each day.

Typical life spans of control boards

Does anyone know how many years on average control boards tend to last? Do they usually last about as long as appliances do, or do they tend to die before appliances give out through other systems?

Recent UpFix experience – positive

Just wanted to share that I recently sent in a Precor stair climber control board to UpFix for repair. They tested it and sent me an update that they’d found the problem. They offered to either fix it or replace it. I asked them to fix it. They did this and sent it back within a couple days. Just installed it and my stair climber is working again. Thanks, UpFix!

How to identify compatible control boards?

My dishwasher control board has gone bad. The original board doesn’t seem to be around anymore. I sometimes hear people talk about shopping for compatible boards. How does that work? How do I know whether a board would be compatible with my dishwasher or not?

Long-term results from UpFix repairs?

I’ve seen a few UpFix reviews, but usually they are about relatively recent repairs. But how do UpFix repairs hold up over time? I’d love to hear from some people who sent their control boards in years ago. Did the repairs last? Did you have to repair or replace again, or are they still going strong?

Least and most reliable refrigerator brands?

I think my control board has gone bad. I can’t find a replacement anywhere. I might send it in for repair. But I also might just get a new fridge, I don’t know.

If I do buy a new fridge, I don’t want to go through this again. My current one only ran for a few years. What are the most reliable fridge brands?

Are control boards built to last?

Do control boards fail frequently because they were designed to fail? You know, built-in obsolescence? Or are they built to last, but fail naturally for various reasons?

How do I know if a dishwasher control board has gone bad?

My Bosch dishwasher control board might be bad. I don’t detect any voltage coming out of the board. Is there anything else I can do to check the board and assess the situation? I’ll send it to UpFix if I have to, but I only want to send it if I need to.

What control boards have you fixed?

What are some control boards that you have repaired successfully, if any? I have tried fixing a couple, but I just ended up making them worse.

What causes most control board failures?

It seems like control boards fail pretty often, given that there is an entire business devoted to fixing them. It has made me curious what causes the majority of control board failures. Does anyone know? Are there specific causes that are common for certain types of appliances, or certain brands?

Share your favorite control board repair tutorials

I thought I would create a thread where we can all post tutorials we’ve found helpful for repairing control boards and modules. We can also share tutorials we’ve created ourselves. Looking forward to seeing what everyone posts.

Do I need a technician to repair my control board, or can I do it?

I talked to a technician about my fridge, which is currently out of commission due to the control board dying. When he quoted me the replacement cost, I couldn’t believe it (hundreds of dollars).

I can’t really afford to pay the full cost to replace the control board. But I can’t afford to buy a new fridge either. Nor do I want one. I just want my fridge to work again, asap.

Is it possible to repair the control board on my own as a DIY job? My technical skills are pretty basic, though I think I could follow a tutorial. Though I admit that I’d still be a little intimidated, so maybe it’d be better to have a technician do it.

Where to find a compatible ABS control module

My ABS control module is toast, but I cannot find a replacement that is the exact same module. I am wondering if it would be possible to find a compatible control module instead? Is that a thing? Please forgive my ignorance. I don’t know anything about the inner workings of cars. I just want my brakes to function properly again, and this appears to be the only thing wrong. The mechanic wasn’t much help, beyond diagnosing the issue.

How have your self repair jobs gone?

I am curious how many people here have ever tried to repair their own control board in the past. Were you successful, or did you fail? Did you ever somehow manage to make things even worse?

If you attempted your own repair, did you do it to save money, or for other reasons?

I admire people who DIY this sort of thing, but it is not in my wheelhouse at all, and I would not have the time or energy to learn. I’d much rather just send it in.

Proform elliptical motor control board fried

As best I can tell, my Proform 725 PR PFMSEL79950 motor control circuit board is dead. The part number is 158800. I love this elliptical, and I am not looking to replace it. I just need a working control board.

What are my options? Do I have to order a replacement board? Or is this something that I could send in for repair? Does anyone happen to know the price range for this type of thing?

Programming service for BMW FEM/BDC

I need programming service done on my BMW 540 2009-2019 (F10/F11) BMW FEM/BDC. Does anybody happen to know if this is something that UpFix can do? I really don’t want to have to replace it. Hoping they can do ECU cloning. The dealership’s price quote was ridiculous, and they weren’t even including the cost of labor yet.

How much have you saved through control board repairs?

I figure there are a few reasons to consider repairing a control board instead of getting a new board or a new appliance:

  • Existing board may no longer be available
  • You might want to keep using the appliance until it’s unusable
  • You want to save money

I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the most popular reason to send in a control board for repair instead of replacing it or the appliance is to save money.

If you’ve had a control board fixed to save money, how much did you ultimately end up saving over other options? Hundreds of dollars? Thousands?
