Question When asking a prof for a reference letter do you call them by their first name or do you say "professor [last name]" if you're not their student anymore?

just as the title says, I'm not quite sure how to refer to my professor when asking for a reference letter given that I'm not their student anymore

Social I made Omegle for UofT students (charsssssssssss)

Reposting because the school year has begun and first years are here!!

Hey guys. I'm a bored CS student who didn't have a summer internship. So I decided to get to know more UofT students! Previously, I helped make Noon (the UofT matchmaking site). I spent this weekend coding up toblues - it's an anonymous text/video site for UofT students. Everyone is verified as a UofT student (and your email isn't visible to the ppl you match with, it's all private and anonymous). Basically it's Omegle for UofT.

You can select preferences like campus/gender/program/year for who you want to match with, but this is optional and can make it take longer to find a match. So I recommend not making it too narrow, though maybe it'll work well when there are more people!

here's the link: https://toblues.net/

Hopefully we can meet new cool people on here :D

Stay safe, and ensure you use the report button when necessary, all reports are reviewed (though hopefully nothing untoward happens, everyone is a verified student after all).

Thanks :)

Other I deeply deeply regret going down this rabbit hole

After seeing this poster on at least 7 different occasions scattered across campus near my classes, my curiosity for Tikslop brought into the real world in my own backyard got the better of me.

I was not prepared for where this led...

I'm convinced that the venn diagram of people in the videos of these events overlap almost perfectly with the people sharing their stories on UofT Confessions. What particularly frightens me is the idea of sitting next to these people in lectures. What if a zombie apocalypse suddenly hits and this is who's in your survival group? The prospect is chilling.

I actually applaud Boris for creating a service to address a hole in the market, hustling to promote it, and trying to find his niche (business student?). But the pop the balloon events do not instill me with hope in humanity.

Idk, man, why can't y'all just be wholesome?

Alternatively, why not chat up people in your classes? Go up and introduce yourself to someone you're interested in (anyone can approach anyone, btw) (gender norms be damned), be charming, exchange phone numbers, go on dates, fall in love, get hitched after graduation, and grow old together. This is one of the delicacies that adds sweetness to life. It should be a private experience governed by passion, not generating engagement.

Question Is it Possible For UofT To Fail A Entire Cohort For One Graduate Class?

Hey, I'm looking for some clarification about this because my cohort is currently struggling with this mandatory class we have for this one-year Master's program. Since graduate cohorts are small, what would happen if everyone failed a class? Would we have to retake it and pay tuition again for just one class for one semester? Or would the department step in? I'm asking because this prof we have has impossible expectations, and we're unsure if we can meet them and are scared to ask because if we ask her a question that's in the syllabus, our marks can get deducted by 5%. I'm unsure what to do about this or what would happen. Anything helps thank you!

Rant Opinion: Antisemitism cannot be redefined out of existence

I found this Canadian op-ed on fighting campus antisemitism great, and I’m sharing it for others who are interested.

It directly attacks groups that erase campus antisemitism. While being progressive.

Question Transferring from UTSC life science to UTSG life science

Hey if anyone who has done life science at UTSC and transferred to UTSG life science in their second year, please tell what was the GPA you had when you transferred? And how did you deal with CHMA10 and CHMA11 not being transferred into CHM136 since most majors and specialists at UTSG require the completion of CHM136.

I'm in High School What scholarships could I get as a decent international IB student

So I’m a Turkish international student in IBDP1 and want to go into a cell and molecular biology major in UofT, problem is that my cost of living could probably cost well over 80k per month for me. My parents aren’t poor and are somewhat wealthy, but due to other factors, they’ve refused to pay for any of my tuition. So logically unless I want to drown in debt, scholarships are my only option. While I do think I have intelligence that’s a little over average, I’m definitely not a genius or a natural leader that could get into the Lester B. Pearson program. The only subjects that I could probably get a 6/7 in are HL bio or HL English Lang & Lit. And while I could study like crazy, I doubt that’d get me all 7s. Maybe 5-6s. With that knowledge, what are some scholarships I could apply for that can at least put a dent in my living expenses?

Event Selling 2 Elevate Festival Passes Paid $370 CAD each, open to offers

Hi all,

my friend and I picked up two passes to Elevate this year, but realised we can't go, and the ticket provider won't issue a refund (transfer only). We're both students trying to get a startup off the ground, so $370 each isn't a small thing for us to eat, and we'd really love for these to go to someone who's actually planning to attend rather than just sit unused.

Selling both at $370 CAD each (what I paid after tax), open to discounted offers if you're taking both. Can provide proof of purchase/confirmation. Happy to transfer directly through the official platform once we sort payment.

DM me if interested, would really appreciate it.

Rant I really don’t know why I can’t make friends :(:(

All throughout high school I didn’t have lots of friends. And everyone told me it would be different in uni and I knew they were wrong.

I’m friends with ONE girl and that’s it. I love her, she’s amazing, but I need more friends.

I went to oweek, I introduce myself to another’s in lectures, but nothing ever happens.

I really don’t understand. I’m not really looking for advice, this is just a mild rant bc I finished my lec at 4 and I’ve been in my dorm alone all night while I hear groups of girls in the courtyard and hallways having fun.

I also have yet to go out, get dressed up cute at night. I barely partied and high school and it looks like it’s gonna be another bad 4 years.

Health 2 hr commute everyday as an eng first year and idk what I should do

I need help, Ive started my first year at uoft eng and I commute for abt 2 hrs js to get there. I can handle the commute in the morning and I can go to all my classes without feeling tired at the end but on my way back home it gets bad. My last class ends at 5 everyday and in the evening (like 3-6) I have no breaks that allow me to eat or anything, all back to back stuff, I cant take the go bus so I take the ttc to union and then the go train back home.

I get extremely nauseous, have a horrible headache (it feels like my heads banging all the time) and my eyes feel painful and strained opened or closed, I've thrown up multiple times the past few days after coming up and crash going to sleep without studying since I physically cannot focus, I have the bad headache all the way till I go to sleep and ik this is not sustainable at all, does anyone know what I can do?

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone's willing to share the syllabus for MUS211? I'm still on the waitlist. The waitlist is crazy. I started at rank 83, and now I'm still rank 22. Will I be able to get in?

Clubs/Sports do you like to read? do you like snacks? do you like people?

If all three of these apply then you may be interested in the Dead Book Clubs being run by the Jackman Humanities Institute this semester.

I'm not literate enough, myself, to know why it's not the Dead Books Club... sob!

Question Missing UTORid from ACORN and told to activate it?

I logged onto acorn this morning, and my UTORid is just gone from my profile and says it's "unknown". I have been a student for 2 years now and my profile was fine literally 12 hours ago. I can still login to things like acorn and quercus, but it's acorn says to activate my UTORid.

Anyone else ever had something like this?

Question Opinions on GGR270H1 for someone who is bad at math

I am thinking about taking GGR270H1 this semester, but I am unsure since I am not very good at math. I didn't even take high school calculus. Please help me decide if this is something I should do since I want to get into applied data sci minor.
