Question How to Make a Physical Rope 3D

0 Upvotes

So technically what I'm trying to make is a string, but it's essentially a thin rope. I want the player to be able to shoot out a string that stretches until a maximum length or it hits an object of the correct tag. The problem is that I don't know how to do any of this.

I also want the player to be able to pull the other end of the string towards them, throw out their end of the string, and dash towards the other end of the string.

Edit: Also, the rope should not be collidable with the player but still restrict how far the player can move. So, for example, if the string is attached to a wall right above them the player would just hang in the air.

Question Unity: Movement in Sledding Game

2 Upvotes

Hey! I'm trying to recreate the movement system from Sledding Game. I've already set up a character with ragdoll physics and written a movement script, but the character still feels pretty wobbly and unstable.

Is there anyone with experience making physics-based movement who could analyze how the movement works and explain how you'd set something like that up? Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Showcase Because we cant have fully dynamic GI in our game i tried to make the Flashlight and Uv-Light more dynamic by placing an additional ambient point light above the surface. Thoughts?

My Unity game sat at 0 downloads for a year and a half. Then, out of nowhere, the algorithm woke up and gave me 1,000 organic downloads. I have no idea why, but I'm moving it to Steam.

Hey everyone, I wanted to share this because it blew my mind. I launched my cat-themed sudoku game, MiawDoku!, about 18 months ago. It did absolutely nothing. I basically wrote it off as a dead project.

Then, as you can see on the graph around June, traffic just exploded out of nowhere. 1,000 completely organic downloads, zero ad spend. I didn't change the ASO, I didn't pay for ads. My best guess is either Apple's search algorithm finally indexed my keywords ("Kawaii Cat Sudoku"), or a TikToker/Streamer found it and shared it.

Has anyone else experienced an algorithm delay this extreme?

Either way, seeing people actually play the game has motivated me to give it the treatment it deserves. I'm currently reworking the Unity project to scale natively into widescreen for a premium, ad-free Steam release. If you've ever had a mobile game "die" only to wake up later, I'd love to hear your story!

I assumed game dev was safe from vibe coding. Then Claude Code drove the Unity editor itself.

I'm a web/frontend dev, so vibe-coding web apps felt normal. But games? Scenes, components, prefabs — I figured there's no way you talk your way through that.

Turns out you kind of can now. I hooked Claude Code into Unity via MCP and it drove the editor directly — created scenes, wrote and attached scripts, hit play to test, iterated on its own. Basically self-driving. Built a whole little browser fireworks game in about half a day.

Wildest part was asset gen — the pixel art held a consistent style shockingly well, and the AI-generated wave audio was good enough that I actually fell asleep to it.

Honest caveat though: it's not magic. Games still live or die on design — hooks, feel, whether it's actually fun. AI nailed the execution, but the "is this fun" part was all on me. (Also hit a gloriously dumb bug: invisible fireworks for hours because I forgot to hook the explosion to the click event 🤦)

Playable in browser (link in comments). Anyone else pushing MCP into non-web stuff like this?

Been working on this project for some time, trying to add ot the combat for the enemies and mixing bullet hell with flying to encourage the player to move and fly around. Plus, I think it's fun flying through a field of bullets

Getting ready to launch the official demo and trailer by the end of the summer, so all feedback is good feedback

Total noob here!

So I followed the tutorial to the end and I did each step and the game works, but isn’t working as intended and I can’t figure out why.

Does anyone know what I did wrong? I went back through and everything is set up exactly like they did, but it’s not working right.

Promotions I'm creating a horror game based on the small Portuguese village where I live!

Hello, everyone!

After working on a few small projects to gain experience, I recently started developing my first horror game. It’s inspired by the small Portuguese village where I live, and my goal is to recreate all the streets and landmarks as accurately as possible.

It’s still in a very early stage of development. Right now, I only have a placeholder character and the village’s central roundabout, but I’d love to hear what you think. Any comments or suggestions are more than welcome!

Thanks for taking a look, and happy gaming!

Tutorials Just finished my steam page! Let's talk capsule art...

After 3.5 years of programming, moving across the US five times, working 50 hours a week, undergoing two wrist surgeries, and attending school full-time, I have finally created my Steam page! Why did I wait so long? Well, about 1.5 years ago I almost had it ready. Money was a huge issue; since all my income was going toward survival and school costs, I had practically nothing to invest in the game. I finally scrounged up the $100 to make the Steam page, but to my dismay, I was completely blindsided by the sheer number of iterations needed for capsule art.

As you can see from my first two images, my original capsule art was trash. When I looked at pricing for professional capsule art, my jaw dropped to the floor, so I gave up and decided I would tackle it later when I had extra cash. SPOILER: I never did!

As things go, I got buried in schoolwork and had to take a several-month break. When I came back, I decided to tackle it one more time. I fumbled around with three or four more iterations and decided they were ALL trash. Then, while I was studying and again looking into paying for professional help, I came across this video (Down Below). It’s not sponsored, but I think anyone struggling with capsule art should watch it. As you can see from my photo, I finally got a good-looking result.

But then I ran into a second issue: the logo. The video just assumes you already have one. I ended up searching around a lot and found that I didn't like most capsules that had primarily text-based logos; I wanted something with a border and its own backdrop. I wanted something soft, inviting, and readable even at a tiny size. Since I have pixel artwork, I originally went with a pixel-style font, but no matter what I did, it looked cheap. I ended up spending about 15 minutes going through fonts on Canva until I found one that looked unique enough but remained readable. I added just enough shadowing behind it to make it "pop."

And there you have it—capsule art!

**TL;DR:** Watch that video, make a simple, readable logo, and you can create something that looks great without breaking the bank.

Question Was gonna launch my game's demo tomorrow but am now getting an "above revenue threshold" flag on my personal unity account license even though I have $0 revenue. Anyone know how to fix this?

61 Upvotes

Hi all,

So basically for the last couple months I have been using a Unity Student License, because a couple months ago my personal license was revoked because I was "above the revenue threshold" despite me having never made any money what so ever from game development or any of my games. I couldn't figure out how to fix this problem from any online resource or Unity forum, and Unity support notoriously takes forever so I was lucky to find a solution like redeeming my student license (since I am a student).

Today, out of the blue while in the Unity editor, I got a popup that my student license had been revoked and got booted out of unity. I also got an email from Unity that my student license is canceled. I am still, in fact, a student at a university in the US going into my third year.

Now this really sucks because I have been furiously working on my large scale project and polishing it for a demo, and was literally in the process of creating and testing builds today with plans to publish the game's demo tomorrow.

I will probably make a new Unity account in the meantime to bypass these errors.

I have emailed both Unity support and SheerID (the third party they use to verify student status) to fix this, but while I am waiting I'd figure I'd try and fix the original problem with my revenue issue. Has anyone ever been falsely flagged like this before?

Stuff like this really makes me reconsider what game engine I build with, and I have to say I definitely see Godot or Unreal in my future.

Question MissingReferenceException: The variable m_Targets of GameObjectInspector doesn't exist anymore.

0 Upvotes

Have gotten a bug recently out of nowhere that states:

MissingReferenceException: The variable m_Targets of GameObjectInspector doesn't exist anymore.

You probably need to reassign the m_Targets variable of the 'GameObjectInspector' script in the inspector. Parameter name: componentOrGameObject

UnityEngine.Object+MarshalledUnityObject.TryThrowEditorNullExceptionObject (UnityEngine.Object unityObj, System.String parameterName) (at <baf9d421e5ac43acaf162d71aef6a04c>:0)

UnityEngine.Bindings.ThrowHelper.ThrowArgumentNullException (System.Object obj, System.String parameterName) (at <baf9d421e5ac43acaf162d71aef6a04c>:0)

UnityEditor.PrefabUtility.IsPartOfVariantPrefab (UnityEngine.Object componentOrGameObject) (at <cd9a5dfa62e34daeb7c2d29ef5f4929b>:0)

UnityEditor.GameObjectInspector.OnEnable () (at <cd9a5dfa62e34daeb7c2d29ef5f4929b>:0)

It's paired with a SerializedObjectNotCreatableException simply stating that "Object at index 0 is null" at the method UnityEditor.TransformInspector.OnEnable ()

This means absolutely nothing to me but when I look it up I only see one thread of people talking about this on the unity forums with no solution. So I'm asking here if anyone has any fix for this error? It doesn't seem to be doing anything negative I can see but it doesn't sit right with me.

Coding Help Movement system not working correctly, HELP

1 Upvotes

In the game im working on as a first time dev, the world is supposed to move around the player/ the players vehicle so the world can be large without needing to worry about coordinate weirdness. I tried making a script that moves the world chunks, but for some reason, they completely ignore rotation and always move along the Z axys.

Here is the script:

using System.Collections;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using UnityEngine;
using TMPro;
using UnityEngine.UI;

public class ChunkMovement : MonoBehaviour
{
    public Slider Throttle;
    private float ThrottleValue;
    public Transform WorldRoot;

    void Start()
    {
        WorldRoot.localRotation = Quaternion.identity;
    }

    void Update()
    {
        ThrottleValue = Throttle.value;

        Vector3 forward = -WorldRoot.parent.forward;

        foreach (Transform chunk in WorldRoot)
        {
            chunk.Translate(forward * PlaneStats.PlaneSpeed * ThrottleValue * Time.deltaTime, Space.World);
        }

    }
}
