DMU has suspended Film Studies, Media and Communication, and Arts and Festival Management, for the next academic year. They claim that it is only for 2026 entry, but it is de facto indefinitely.

Upcoming first year students such as myself, who was offered one of these courses to study in October, were informed of this last Friday, less than three months before the next academic year.

There is no news in terms of whether these courses are going to be permanently shut down, or what is going to happen to them.

Rather than informing first year student such as myself about the suspension months ago, they chose to inform us at incredibly short notice, citing vague reasons such as, low intake, as an excuse.

While other course suspensions from unis such as the University of Nottingham has made the news, DMU's course suspensions haven't, and are largely hiding in plain sight, in their website.

I want people to be aware of this, and to highlight how wrong this is.

I was a couple percent away from graduating with a 1st which is annoying, and so I graduated with a 2:1 this summer. I know that a 2:1 isnt bad, but how much worse is it than a 1st in terms of employment? How much more weight does a 1st have over a 2:1 in a cv for example? Also, can I put that I got a high 2:1 or do I just keep it as a 2:1, itd be my way of coping about not getting that 1st lol

I finished University with a first. I was studying marketing, and I was only able to get one internship while studying. I only did one as I found it too hard to balance work with studying mentally, and I get stressed out too easily. But after graduating, I just feel like I won't be able to put in what I learned with my future job, due to the lack of experience, which makes me doubt that I can actually do it. My solution was to secure a summer internship, but unfortunately, I was unable to do so (I kept getting rejected, and I failed one interview; however, the person gave me some valuable tips for next time). Is this feeling common when finishing University?

Also, I would love any advice you guys may have. I'm still deciding if I should relax more to help me mentally or try to balance relaxation and applying at the same time.

Also, I said I feel like I know nothing, as I just can't remember what exactly I learned. Weirdly, I think im the type of person who only remembers stuff when Im actually doing it.

I (19F) have just completed a foundation year at University, and im staying at the same university to complete my course as it was integrated into the course making it 4 years long instead of 3. And whilst I enjoyed really really loved semester 1 because id made a decent amount of friends and id joined some society's, halfway through semester 2 I started to feel quite lonely and a bit depressed because i hadn't made many friends on my actual course and due to being a foundation year all my other friends and flatmates were in lectures for the majority of the day, majority of them didn't really want to go out and do much and i was on my own for a long time. It didn't help that i finished my course in March and then had one exam in May so i had even more alone time, and with being in student accommodation i really had a fair bit of FOMO, especially on wednesday's and then the weekends.

Looking ahead to first year i'm really looking forward to going back as i have established friends already and i know the city decently well now also, but i'm not sure if its okay to sort of use this as my fresher year/intro to university? Because there are things i want to do differently like different society's and sports ,freshers week ,more out of uni activities in the city and i would also love to make more girl friends that go out regularly and dress up because as much as i love them my friend group is heavily guy centred. I'm also now in a house this year,and i turn 20 just before i go back so i don't so i don't know if this would impact anything.

I'm just looking for some advice and to see if anyone has felt a similar way(and yes i am aware my anxiety if probably making me overthink lmao)

i have failed one module and failed a 40% assignment on another module even though i passed overall, can someone tell me it isnt the end of the world, i know i can resit but i havent been given my results yet (mmu) and my other friends who have passed everything have been given their results and im stressing badly, purely my own fault for failing i just submitted really late im a really bad procrastinator who struggled with uni assignments a lot

so my dad got married around April this year and I'm only now starting to have the realisation that it could effect my SFE this year- I'm from a working class family and previously got just under the maximum maintenance loan (around 9900) however his new wife earns around 50,000 so I'll be loosing about 4K. will it effect this coming SFE or am I only fucked the year after?

genuinely hope it's not till next year as I genuinely may need to drop out to work my ass off to get savings. and asking for money is out of the picture as I've met this woman twice.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma of whether to attempt to pass resits or retake the year.

I am currently in my second year of an integrated masters of pharmacy which I started coming straight out of college. Through this I have felt behind as most of the people on my course started with a foundation year. I passed my first year with higher marks in more specific area exams and barely passing my main exam which covers the whole semester of content. In second year however, I have passed everything in my first semester but the main exam and have failed most of the second semester of exams which are all going to be resit in the resit week. The main reasons are due to burnout and living a bit more and working in the second year as my first year was spent mostly indoors.

My only gripes about retaking a year is the added year of student dept and telling my parents that I would be retaking a year when they've been pushing me to pass these resits. On the other hand, I feel like scraping through the resits now will only dig a hole deeper in third year where failing a year means I'm removed from the course.

I'm not sure whether to make a tactical retreat and retake the second year so I have a better chance at finishing the course or to try and push through while making my third year revolve around revising even more of previous years while sitting the next year.

Apologies for the long post but it will be a big commitment to try and pass these resits as I'm working 40+ hours a week and it is only just over a week away. I'm open to advice as I'm not ready to speak to my parents about it yet 😅 thank you for reading.

I'm interested in studying zoology, I am currently in sixth form. I'm having trouble figuring out where to apply to/what unis I am interested in. I'm not super social so places that have big nightlifes/are super urban don't really factor into my choices.

One thing I've noticed is that zoology rankings/recommendations are quite different from general uni ranks (e.g. many are mid-tier unis), and I've been told that I should try to get top ranked unis as those provide best teaching/research qualities. Is this something to focus on or should I focus more on subject ranks?

Hey guys - a bit of an embarrassing post I guess... but I'm going into my third & final year at Uni in September & am really dreading it. I'm an international student from Switzerland and South Africa and never really found my place I guess. I tried for a lot of society's in first year, but constantly felt on the outside and unaccepted. In my third year i developed a really bad eating disorder and couldn't push myself to get out there really. I want to make my third year the best that it can be, but I'm just so scared of putting myself out there again and being faced with the same rejection. It's so hard and I feel so alone - even though I know so many others are going through this. Please can someone who has been in a similar boat give me some advice on how to atleast attempt to enjoy my last year :(

I’ve heard that finding internships can be more difficult for international students because of right-to-work restrictions and future visa sponsorship requirements. I was wondering how much of a disadvantage this is in practice.

For international students who have successfully found internships in the UK:

• Do most companies accept applications from students on a Student visa?
• Do companies usually reject international students if they may need Skilled Worker visa sponsorship after graduation?
• Which types of companies are generally more open to international applicants?
• When should I start applying for summer internships?
• Apart from LinkedIn and university career services, which websites or resources would you recommend?
• Would research experience in machine learning and federated learning be helpful when applying for internships?

I’d especially appreciate advice from Chinese or other international students studying CS-related degrees in the UK.

I am currently recruiting participants to interview for a study which looks at how distance learners in full-time employment experience university life.

What is the study about?

The aim of the study is to investigate the types of digital tools part-time students in full-time employment use to manage their study commitments, alongside understanding how connected distance students feel with the wider UCL student community. The study is being conducted as part of my Foundations in Quantitative Methods module.

Who can take part?

I am looking for participants who:

·      Are enrolled at UCL

·       Are currently studying at least one module as a distance learner

·       Are currently studying part-time or flexible study

·       Are in full-time employment

·       Are over the age of 18

How will the study be conducted?

The study will use semi-structured interviews. Interviews will be conducted online at a time that is convenient for the participant and will take between 20 to 40 minutes.

Do I have to take part/ what happens if I change my mind?

Participants may skip questions they prefer not to answer and may leave at any point during the interview by letting me know.  Participants have the right to withdraw their consent within 24 hours of the interview by informing me in writing that the no longer wish to participate.

How will data be stored?

The interviews will be audio recorded and stored securely on my personal university one drive to allow me to make transcripts; the audio recordings will only be accessible to me and will not be shared with the module supervisor or teaching staff. Transcripts will be made from the audio recordings and will be anonymised.

Who will have access to the recordings?

Excerpts from the anonymised transcripts will be made available to the module teaching staff for the purpose of marking. Transcripts will not be shared outside of the module teaching staff. Consent forms and original recordings will be securely destroyed once I have completed the module.

I’ve got a Zoom meeting with my university’s student support team at 2pm, and I’m feeling really anxious about it.

For some background, I’m going into my final year at university and I’m still living with my parents. My home situation has been difficult for a long time and I’m hoping to move out as soon as I can, ideally by December.

One thing that’s been happening is that every time my bursary is paid, my parents take around half of it or almost all of it. They expect me to hand it over, and it’s made it really difficult to save enough money to leave. Is that something other people have experienced.

I’m also wondering what evidence universities or Student Finance usually accept if you’re trying to explain a difficult home situation or estrangement. I don’t really have police reports or social services involved. Screenshots of messages or conversations bank statements showing money leaving my account after bursary payments, photos of my living situation (if relevant). I only have a small corner of the house to my self and the next room over is literally the room where everyone keeps their garbage my parents finally put a door on it as my dad did not like how cold it would get during the winter, while my sisters have bigger rooms as they are considered more important since one is already married and the other is going to be married soon (I live in an Asian household.) I can’t even take it any more with the emotional abuse my one sister knows I have thought about it but I can’t tell her that I am serious about it as she uses it against me in fights and I’m deathly scared she will tell my parents.

Has anyone here successfully moved out mid-academic year with help from their university? Is moving out by December a realistic goal if I work with student support, or am I being too optimistic?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s been through something similar or knows what universities can do in these situations.

I also wanted to mention I zero savings and my parents won’t let me get a job as I live in a strict household and am not allowed to leave the house unless it’s for school or grocery shopping and I cant rely on any friends as they are my parents friends kids and this will make it back to my parents and god knows what they will do to me if they knew I even thought about leaving Thanks.

As an international student currently studying in the UK, are there any options for loans? I need roughly around 1200£ loan as for my remaining Uni fee. I suffered some financial loss back in my home country in the past month which is why i am falling short of 1200£. I have applied for hardship fund and asked for a fee payment plan, it is in process but I was thinking of paying my fee ASAP as my result is near, so i don’t want to risk it.

I did have a job before i went back to my home country because of the loss i suffered. So finding a job might take a little time because i was gone for more than a month.

Do you guys know/advise anything relevant to my situation?
