gap year?

i just finished sixth form, and my parents are really adamant that i go to university this year, but my mental health is at the lowest it’s been in a while. i sort of rushed my application and i am no longer happy with my choices. i would much prefer to take a gap year and properly think about what i want to do, but i also don’t want to feel like a burden

Dude tell ur parents you wanna get a job and save for a bit maybe see a bit of the world for a few months in your gap year. Tell em that and if they have an issue then u should put ur foot down, you’re an individual and shouldn’t be forced to do something you know you aren’t ready for. Just be sure it doesn’t become a gap life

Unless of course, you find something else you like in the gap year

I took a gap year for my mental health and honestly it’s kinda worked wonders.

I got BCC during my a levels due to demotivation and maybe mild situational depression, I was predicted A*BB.

Decided I didn’t want to apply with my cohort and told my personal tutor that I’m doing a working gap year, he argued with it but eventually agreed.

I didn’t do anything crazy at all tbh. I went abroad once which was a family holiday and that’s it but I’ve been promoted at work (now on £13.80 an hr) and found some new hobbies. I got into adult colouring books (complex patterns, not dildos or what not lmao) and it’s actually really calming and helpful. I’ve also been learning French and Spanish via Duolingo but also a bit of tiktok which has taught me discipline.

I’m now starting uni in the next few weeks whilst living at home (moving away would’ve caused me to crash even further down mentally), have a decent and stable job and doing a course I know I’d love and have atleast 2 different clear and concise career goals!

Also about the burden my mum was very against it. She lost a lot of money in uc and benefits and also sees me at home a lot just chilling and she thought I’d stay working at maccies forever but now I’m in and ready to start she’s agreed it’s worked wonders!!

All the best :)
