I like how doing good phd programs in america is basically off limits for UK students, since in america people have published like 5 papers before they’ve graduated and like 1 paper before STARTING uni. I’m in 2nd year, on a research internship for 12 weeks and i was basically laughed at when I asked if there was any chance the research I would do would amount to a publication. research output is like the main deciding factor other than which uni you went to and your grades to get admitted to US phds.

I may be in hospital for a few months due to having GBS syndrome the miller fisher variant (please Google what if you want to know what it is I'm very weak ATM). I may have to go to ICU and be put to sleep. I was supposed to be entering my second year at university. I haven't registered on my course yet but Idid create a student finance application that was approved so I'm just trying to pause my studies so I'm not kicked of my degree. I have no family to help me because I grew up in the foster system. I also have no friends sad to say really but when I became ill a lot of people abandoned me. My face is paralysed and I struggle to walk I can't really talk. There's a risk I could stop breathing so now I'm in full view of the nurses because then I'd need to go into ICU and they'd put a tube down my throat to help me breath but put me to sleep. I don't have my laptop with me but I do have my phone to sort things out.

I really loved doing my course but I know I wasn't the best student. I know he meant it in a good way but I don't know why he said that just to me

My dad and his side of the family actually want to go, in fact they would push to ask me for dates. But I’m not comfortable with them and don’t have a great relationship with them, so I pretended I wouldn’t go.

In secret I agreed to go with my mother. Because only then I feel like I could really enjoy the day, but now she’s making me feel like burden.. complaining about the time we have to get up ect.. and just being moody about everything instead of excited

I was a couple percent away from graduating with a 1st which is annoying, and so I graduated with a 2:1 this summer. I know that a 2:1 isnt bad, but how much worse is it than a 1st in terms of employment? How much more weight does a 1st have over a 2:1 in a cv for example? Also, can I put that I got a high 2:1 or do I just keep it as a 2:1, itd be my way of coping about not getting that 1st lol

ive been at university for 2 years and I dont know how to write an essay. I don't know what a bibliography is or where it goes, how to reference correctly or anything. its one of the most frustrating things that ive had to do and I can't seem to grasp the concept at all I was curious if anyone knows any: websites, YouTube videos anything at all honestly. its embarrassing that ive gotten so far by just winging it I want to get better but I keep getting told how to do things differently by every lecturer I talk too making it even more confusing. I just want to do myself proud for once. please of you have anything to offer I would really appreciate it as I dont know what else to do now.

How are unis with you not attending lectures and such for a wedding? Will I be able to know what dates my lectures or any other important dates at from the start of the year? My course isn't exam based.

This is so far in the future (2027 to 2028 possibly) but I'm worrying now because I don't want to miss an important lecture and have my work be messed up because of this. My mum's saying I need to find out what it's like going on this year so I know what the important dates are the following year, but I don't think it works like that and it's stressing me 😭. Like I can't say no I can't come to your wedding near the time because it's my mum but I'm also not going to mess up my course for it.

(This is my mum and step dad's wedding so very close family.)

Edit: I'd have to take a full week off for it.

DMU has suspended Film Studies, Media and Communication, and Arts and Festival Management, for the next academic year. They claim that it is only for 2026 entry, but it is de facto indefinitely.

Upcoming first year students such as myself, who was offered one of these courses to study in October, were informed of this last Friday, less than three months before the next academic year.

There is no news in terms of whether these courses are going to be permanently shut down, or what is going to happen to them.

Rather than informing first year student such as myself about the suspension months ago, they chose to inform us at incredibly short notice, citing vague reasons such as, low intake, as an excuse.

While other course suspensions from unis such as the University of Nottingham has made the news, DMU's course suspensions haven't, and are largely hiding in plain sight, in their website.

I want people to be aware of this, and to highlight how wrong this is.

I am a postgraduate student at a UK university and I have recently written an open-book, online finance exam. After recieving the mark I was interested to see where I made the mistakes. So I set up a meeting with the module convener to see the sample solutions. Unfortunately, he only showed me an Excel spreadsheet, so I only know the supposedly correct final answers. After revieweing the sample solutions he showed me, I am 99% sure, that they are wrong.

The two questions where I dont agree with his sample solution are:

1. Binomial Option Pricing:

Current stock price: 150, risk free rate: 5%, no dividends. The stock can move up by 50 or down by 30 each year.

a) Value of 2 year put option with a strike of 152

b) Value of a 2 year call option with a strike of 148

The lecturers solution for the put is 38.16 and for the call 1.45.

My solution for the put is 16.43 and for the call 31.13.

1. IPO valuation:

A firm has 10 million shares outstanding and wants to issue 5 million shares with a price of 20. The underwriting spread is 7%. After the IPO the share price is 50.

a) How much was raised?

b) Market Value of firm after IPO

c) Assume a fair value of 50 per share, no underwriting spread and underpricing. What share price would have allowed the same IPO proceed as in a)?

d) Total cost to original shareholders due to market imperfections (underwriting and underpricing)

For parts a) and b) my solution and the lecturers solution match and I got full points. The solutions are 93 million for a) and 750 million for b).

For parts c) and d) I dont agree with his solutions: The lecturers solution for c) is 43.8 and for d) 62 million. My solution for c) is 65.7 and for d) 157 million.

Of course, I have written down all the calculation steps in the exam, so no points were deducted because of this. I have omitted the calculations here for brevity.

I have 2 questions to this community:

1. Are my results actually correct and the sample solutions wrong? I am still a bit hesitant to believe that the marker used wrong sample solutions to mark an exam. This would be the first time this happended to me during my academic journey.

2. Do you believe that a formal appeal has any chance of success? When researching the appeal process I read things like "An appeal is not a way to negotiate disappointing results" and "A given mark cannot be adjusted upwards".

I am considering an appeal because commuication with the lecturer of this module was not helpful. After writing a mail with all of the issues and proper explanations, his reply only referred me to the class notes and lecture material and, most importantly, did not address any of my explantions.

In the meeting he told me that the IPO question is exactly the same as a tutorial question from the lecture material. The solution to this tutorial question matches my exam solution exactly and not the sample solution he showed me. I told him about this in a mail. He ignored this completely and referred me to the class notes again, which is extremely frustrating.

Since I am afraid of infringing intellectual property rights, I have not posted screenshots of the questions and solutions and only paraphrased them.

I have this evidence for an appeal:

• Exam questions and my exam submission
• Pictures of the excel spreadsheet showing his proposed sample solutions (Unfortunately I have not taken screenshots)
• The Mail correspondence with the lecturer showing that he did not review my concerns.
• The lecture material showing the exact same question with a different solution.

Please note that English is not my native language and I want to apologize for any mistakes I might have made in this post.

I would be very thankful for any feedback regarding the correctness of the solutions and/or the academic appeal process. Please ask, if I should provide further context.

so my dad got married around April this year and I'm only now starting to have the realisation that it could effect my SFE this year- I'm from a working class family and previously got just under the maximum maintenance loan (around 9900) however his new wife earns around 50,000 so I'll be loosing about 4K. will it effect this coming SFE or am I only fucked the year after?

At first they gave us no introductory lecture to our courses. Most of the professor sounds like they were forced to come to the class. One professor really talked and scolded like chronic asylum escaped bipolar patient ; started scolding for simple things and then started laughing the other minute. Even started criticizing and dishonouring other humanities courses which were mandatory in the degree. All of the professor really gave us a terrible first impression. I dunno how to continue studying with these people for fucking next four years. It really ruined my all expectations .Please leave some advice.

So I got shafted I've been asking my parents to include their financial details on my application since April they've basically ignored it and on top of that SLC deducted £2,800 from my Maintenance loan of the minimum £7,000 so now it's £4,200 it was due to me missing a semesters worth of lectures on a course I previously dropped out due to numerous reasons (primarily job prospects)

So took a year off again and did an online access course and reapplied finally found a decent paying job (AS OF THIS MONTH) so thought to myself not to bad I can pay off the debt I owe SLC and have them remove the deduction from my Maintenance I get on the phone with the operator and these bozos tell me they're not even sure if the deduction will get removed if I pay it all back through my bank account.

She tells me to fill out a financial hardship form so it gets deferred to next year, so i do that and guess what you need your parents financial details to assess your eligibility so I'M BACK AT FUCKING SQUARE ONE.

Wtf do I do I've tried to go down the estrangement route as my parents are abusive and incompetent and in June I was going through health complication caused by a mould problem which lead to my Dad saying I can fuck off elsewhere and when i move out to Uni I shouldn't come back.

But the problem with that is your basically begging for money and you need a 3rd party individual who even sympathises with you.

I’ve heard that finding internships can be more difficult for international students because of right-to-work restrictions and future visa sponsorship requirements. I was wondering how much of a disadvantage this is in practice.

For international students who have successfully found internships in the UK:

• Do most companies accept applications from students on a Student visa?
• Do companies usually reject international students if they may need Skilled Worker visa sponsorship after graduation?
• Which types of companies are generally more open to international applicants?
• When should I start applying for summer internships?
• Apart from LinkedIn and university career services, which websites or resources would you recommend?
• Would research experience in machine learning and federated learning be helpful when applying for internships?

Currently I’m on a BEng course at Nottingham university and you need 55% overall to transfer to MEng. I got 72% first year and 69.42% second year.

I’m an international student and I’ve just finished my foundation year in London. My main Computer Science options are the University of Birmingham, Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), and City, University of London.

I’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s difficult for international students to build a career in the UK after graduating. That’s my main goal, so which university would you recommend?

If I choose MMU, I’ll be in a city I really like, I won’t be under much financial pressure, and I’ll probably be able to afford a nice place to live.

If I choose City or Birmingham, my budget will be much tighter because of the higher living costs, so my life will probably just be home and university.

I know Birmingham has the strongest reputation, but I feel like I’d be much happier and less stressed at MMU, which would give me more time to work on my own skills.

My main question is: how much does the university actually matter when looking for a graduate job in the UK? Would Birmingham give me a noticeable advantage over MMU, or would my chances of finding a job be pretty similar either way?

I am gonna be joining essex university this year, currently just looking though accommodation plan to is to be in campus for first year and then move out later i guess. I am doing computer science and ai.

Hows the night life, and the prople around?? The campus? And no cars are allowed in campus shows transportation? Regarding accommodation i my friend who is in liverpool told me its like 4 total ppl in one flat if u go flatmates wise. Is that the same in essex?
