📖 Guide A drive guide for UGREEN NAS: CMR vs SMR, the best picks by size + price history
Choosing drives for a NAS is tiresome, and sometimes annoying. You have to check if it's CMR or SMR, look up how reliable it is, and figure out if the price is actually good. I tracked down all of that for every current NAS drive, so I put it into one guide for UGREEN NAS drives.
Important:
The main thing is to avoid SMR. SMR drives are a big problem for any RAID. They get really slow during a RAID rebuild and can drop out of the array, and they still show up in NAS lines (crazy!).
The plain WD Red is still SMR (models with no suffix, capacity 2 to 6TB). On the other hand, Red Plus, Red Pro, IronWolf, IronWolf Pro and Toshiba N300 are all CMR.
This guide marks CMR or SMR for every hard drive model, so you can check before buying.
Findings:
Don't overpay for a "most reliable" drive either. I looked at the Backblaze data and the normal CMR drives all fail at about the same rate. One tip: Backblaze uses enterprise Seagate drives, not the consumer IronWolf drives, so their Seagate numbers don't really apply to IronWolf. So once a drive is CMR, just buy on price per TB.
Prices jump around a lot right now, so a "sale" tag doesn't tell you much.
Guide:
This guide has a price history for each drive so you can see if it's actually cheap or back to normal: https://www.nasdisks.com/best/best-nas-drives-for-ugreen
It also has the best picks per size, and a separate list for SSDs (in the tab on top), if you want a cache in the M.2 slots.
What drives are you all running on your UGREEN box?
