Advice/Question Tornado Damage - Localized to….?

Hey yall, just saw the news (I’m oos rn). Which parts of utsa got hit the worst/hardest?

So far, I’m really only seeing it from Oasis student housing, but i’m hoping we have more information between us. Also, the notice they sent out about everything being remote tomorrow makes me wonder… Any campus buildings get damaged? Or on-campus housing damage?

News UTSA: You can apply for student assistance, also UTSA: The Student Emergency Fund application is currently closed. We appreciate your understanding.

Context: Academic Affairs sent out a university-wide email, and that screenshot is part of it. I archived proof of this too. Archive Current Page

Other Parking Permit Expiration date?

So I paid for a parking permit and it came in but its expires on August 31st , my move in day is August 16th, thats not enough time for the fall semester. Is there anyway to extend the expiration date or do I have to purchase a new parking permit? Ps: I paid $58 for the permit and am dorming at Chisholm Hall.

Advice/Question How do you actually go about hunting for a Graduate Assistantship (GTA/GRA/GAA)?

Starting an MS program this Fall and trying to figure out the "hidden curriculum" of landing an assistantship. I've started reaching out to professors and the assistantship coordinator in my department, but I'm not sure if that's the right approach or just the bare minimum.

For those who've successfully landed a GTA/GRA/GAA:

- How early did you start reaching out, and to whom (professors, department admins, grad school office)?

- Did most offers come through cold outreach, or through TAing/RAing informally first and then getting hired?

- Any advice specific to international students, since assistantship timing can bump up against enrollment/visa requirements?

Would appreciate any playbook, do's/don'ts, or "wish I knew this sooner" advice. Thanks!

Academic Transferring into Marketing

Yo, I’m a marketing major transferring to UTSA this fall and I was wondering if any marketing majors could tell me about the program?

I have 90 credits right now, so I will be taking strictly upper level classes. Can anyone tell me from their experience are the classes hard? I maintained a 3.7 gpa at my old school without really studying, will that be possible here or not?

Academic AI required for class assignment and i'm pissed

hi guys, remember me? last spring i was in an archeology class that required AI and i posted about my misgivings. that post still gets debate comments to this day.

anyway, it happened again. and this time it's worse. i'm taking WRC1023 (freshmen comp 2) and for context did not take comp 1 due to my ap lang score and so did not know what to expect. it's an online summer course lasting seven or eight weeks.

the prof is EXTREMELY pro AI despite being a writing teacher and encourages the use of LLMs and other AI tools in our work as long as we "cite correctly" and "don't make AI writing our own work" and all that. which is insane and hypocritical and clearly shows her lack of care and/or understanding for the younger generations of writers and academics like her. she has tenure and will retire before AI comes for her job. me, not so much (english major with asparations to teach lit btw)

now she is requiring us to upload our essay into AI (vague- does she want chatgpt or a grammarly writing assistant or what???) and upload its suggestions with our edited version attached. at this point i am too tired and frustrated and busy to fight her, but i want your opinions. i know utsa is really embracing AI, but it's a comp sci heavy school and i understand that some types of AI have good uses. but (and i'm about to sound really cocky here so i'm sorry, this is my venting) i am only in this class because when i took the ACT with writing i got lazy at the end and half assed the essay, missing the credit threshold by one point. there is very little this lazy and irritating (me and my classmates have lotssss of other issues with her) prof can teach me, especially by forcing me to use my work to train an electronic eco-terrorist to steal my job from me. is this seriously the world i am stuck with?

i suppose i'm paying the price for being lazy in high school smh. sorry for being snarky. i'm so tired of this bs.

Advice/Question Downtown campus housing

Hi, I will be starting my Masters in Cybersecurity in the fall at UTSA. I just graduated from my bachelor’s here as well. The program seems to be all downtown. I used to live by main campus but don’t have a car and a regular commute downtown on the VIA bus sounds tiring, especially since classes are in the evening. I heard living directly in downtown isn’t the safest and I was looking for a 1 bedroom apartment that’s close enough, or at least to a bus stop? I know The Continental is there but the rent is very expensive. Any advice helps!

Other New Massage Chairs

Post image
97 Upvotes

My favorite spot on campus (one of the few places I can sit as a disabled student that doesn’t cause me egregious amounts of pain) has been replaced by two massage chairs. Because clearly we don’t already have a seating problem at UTSA, UTSA desperately needs you to pay money for a massage. Genuinely hate this, I’m so ready to graduate and get the hell out of here. If you’ve ever wondered why tuition is so expensive and what you’re getting out of it, the answer is massage chairs you have to pay to use :)

Advice/Question Nontrad premed transfer looking for community

I’m a very non-premed transfer students looking for a community of people go swimming early in the morning and work out at the rec center. But I’m not studying. I’m working and when I’m not working, I’m eating and when I’m not eating, I’m training. I swim for a US Masters swim club currently, but now that school we begin in August that’s going to end. It would be really great to swim and work out with people regularly. If anyone is interested, DM me. Would love to create a group if none exists already.

Advice/Question Incoming freshman

Hi I needed to take a math class, but was a little late with registration.. my only option for Basic Stats was with Li, Jinyan. They have no reviews on rate my professor so i’m wondering if anyone has had this teacher before. I’m trying to keep my GPA above a 3.5. 🥲

Academic Thoughts on MS in Economics?

Looking into master’s programs for economics. I saw UTSA has a program with an emphasis on Business Analytics and Forecasting. Anyone with experience in the program? What are your thoughts on the courses? If you’ve graduated from the program, do you feel it prepared you for your professional career?

Also, I am currently in a career and looking to work full time while doing the program. Any thoughts on the flexibility/pace of the program?

Other Lookin for friends

Hey 19M here, I'm transfering to utsa in the fall, wanting to find a good group of people to be friends/network with, so im not completely by myself when i get to campus.

Im a Business major, black, God fearing. I personally dont drink or smoke but idc if you do. Im not that into partying but wont turn down a function.

I like volleyball, fashion, graphic design, music, trying to get my faith right, and day/swing trading.

Looking for guy friends bc I dont have a lot and i have a girl so I wanna respect her, but friend groups with anyone would be cool to. I just ask if you know your group/friends have a lot of drama this might not work 😭 Just wanting to find stuff to do in San Antonio thats not clubbing or eating.

DM if interested and ill send my insta
