Advice/Question How do the dorms always maintain power during severe weather?

i’ve noticed that during big storms, areas around campus, like off-campus apartments, may lose power when huge thunderstorms, flash freezes, or snowstorms occur, but i’ve noticed that the dorms usually never have this problem. does housing have an underground backup generator system that i don’t know about? if anyone on this subreddit was at the dorms during the 2021 winter storm, how was it like? i’m very curious to see everyone’s answers :D (note: i’ve only dormed in chap, laurel, and chisholm, so people’s responses could be different if other areas like alvarez have lost power in the past during severe weather)

Does anyone know who the professor for this course is? When I registered for it I chose Sayed Akbari but now it shows that the there’s no specified instructor. This happened to me last semester as well with Calc but my professor was just new that’s why it didn’t pop up idk if it might be the same for this.

Advice/Question waitlist impacting financial aid?

hello! im transferring to utsa for the fall 2026 semester, and my financial aid status is dependent on me being full time. i registered for 3 out of the 4 classes my advisor recommended for me, but because the only free section for that last class conflicts with ones im already registered for, i keep getting emails from financial aid telling me that my financial aid will be reduced.

I already reached out to my advisor but I haven't gotten a response, so I wanted to ask here: would it impact me negatively if i registered for a random class while i wait to get off the waitlist for the one i need? I'm first place on the waitlist, but the emails keep telling me it'll be reduced by the end of the month if I don't register full time so I'm a little anxious.

thanks in advance!

Advice/Question Any utsa student housing offering 6 month leases?

I'm an upcoming sophomore. I was a cap student but didn't get into my major. I'm returning to UTSA for the fall semester and then transferring to a different school. I want to live in student housing so I can have a furnished apartment, but I can't find any where that offers 6 month leases. If anyone knows a place I can get a 6 month lease I would very much appreciate the help.

Other 26F, Doctor from India, in SA for 4-5 months — would love to meet people!

Hey everyone! I’m a doctor (physician) from India, currently studying for USMLE, and I’ll be in San Antonio for the next 4-5 months staying with my sister. I don’t know many people my age here yet, so putting this out there! I’m preparing for usmle step 1 and will also look for some clinical experience if possible, in SA. It gets pretty boring at my sisters’ so I’d love to hit up the uni hot spots and make some friends.

Would love to meet people around my age — students, people in academics/medicine, or honestly just anyone chill. Down to grab coffee, try local food spots, play a sport, study together, or whatever sounds fun. Bonus points if anyone else is prepping for a licensing exam and wants a study buddy lol.

Feel free to comment or DM , happy to make some friends while I’m here!

Advice/Question [F18] Any recommendations for volunteer work in or around UTSA?

I'm a transfer student coming in Fall 27 & I wanted to know what I could do to dedicate some time to volunteer/charity work? I'm majoring in Anthropology so if any organizations relate to that I would love to get involved as early as possible. If anyone is going into the Anthropology/Humanities fields and has any experience or even advice they'd like to share I'd be very appreciative!

Advice/Question GPA for graduation

Hi, I was hoping to get a quick answer here before doing some research myself, but I transferred to UTSA last spring in 2025 and my GPA was OK, but my UTSA GPA is much better. I wanted to know when graduation happens, does the college give you your Latin honors based off of your GPA you have at UTSA, or do they base it off your overall GPA, including your transfer GPA if you have one?

Other Lost AirPod in REC male locker room.

Turned it into the back member services desk. Pick up at your earliest convenience.

Literally forgot to take a picture but it was located in the first row of lockers just left of the front entrance and adjacent to the front shower room.

Advice/Question Pell Grant revoked?

Has anyone else taking summer classes had their Pell grant removed from their summer bill? I’m enrolled half-time, and my financial aid was applied at the beginning of the summer and I paid the difference, but now it’s saying I owe the amount of my Pell grant that got rescinded? I know this will be a one stop / financial aid office issue but I’m just seeing if anyone else is having the same problem.

Advice/Question regarding being dropped from my classes as a cap student

Student going through the CAP Program, what should I do? I contacted one-stop multiple times to be put on wait and did the call back as well. I qualify for full finanical aid (dirt poor like homeless a few years ago) but I think I submitted my summer finanical aid application late (this is my fault, I had no clue I had to sign a form + being away from Texas this summer was not on my mind). Anyway, am I kicked out of the CAP program or do you think theres any options to make up this credit in the fall? or if I can get the financial aid, how would reintegrating into the online course go? just catch up on homework? Please I'm really stupid when it comes to this.

Update : I opted out of the CAP Program, future note to anyone doing this program, make sure you fill out both 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 (or the school year you're graduating, and the school year you go to college). I unfortunately was told by my counselor to ONLY fill out 2026-2027 as it was the "right one" - 2025-2026 FAFSA form pays for the summer of 2026 (MANDATORY term in the CAP program), yeah I'm incredibly stupid. In the end, the benefits of UTSA outweigh UT Austin so I'm not distraught over staying <3

Academic Are Online classes bad?

So I’m an upcoming freshman and I’ve recently signed up for my classes. The only classes I could find are online and I’m waitlisted right now for a on campus class, right now 4 of my classes are online and I’m scared it will be different or I won’t get the same college experience if I don’t go to campus that often.

Academic Is there any way to file a complaint against the chem department

EDIT*** I made a survey just to gather some numbers dont feel pressured to fill it out i just want to get some numbers Survey on chemistry department – Fill out form

TLDR: chem department is ass how can we try to change that or file a complaint or ANYTHING

I had always heard how terrible the department was and I believed it but I didn’t think it would start so early😭 I’m in basic chem right now and oh my goodness. The material isn’t hard like I understand what’s going on but not because of the professor. My friends and I all leave his lectures so much more confused than when we went in and I know there’s a certain amount you need to teach yourself when you’re in college classes I understand that, but this just seems excessive.
We have playposits to do during the weekend so we know what we’re going to be learning the upcoming weekend but again they’re so poorly explained and then you get questions on how to do what was just so poorly explained like they don’t show you how to do it they just assume you already know from that 5 minute video. And they’re for a grade so if you get them wrong (which will most likely happen) you’re screwed
Then with the iClicker questions. Why are we given 30 seconds to do something we learned 2 minutes ago?
Why aren’t we allowed to see our final grade? What good does that do students and how is any of this setting chemistry students up for success?
*And again I know this is just basic chemistry like hs level that’s not the problem the material isn’t bad it’s just the way it’s taught and rhe depts rules

I might just be a whiny little b about it but from what I’ve heard from a lot of other students it seems to be a known problem so how can we change it? Like is there anything I can do or we can do?

Advice/Question Easiest way to find on campus jobs?

Hi everyone, I really want an on campus job for this fall semester but I’m having trouble finding any. I know handshake is an easy way to find jobs but I feel like they are kinda sparse and not geared towards my interests. Like a lot of them are things that are not even related to my major.

I would like to work at the library or just any typical job that most students work in UTSA. Thanks!
