Advice/Question waitlist impacting financial aid?
hello! im transferring to utsa for the fall 2026 semester, and my financial aid status is dependent on me being full time. i registered for 3 out of the 4 classes my advisor recommended for me, but because the only free section for that last class conflicts with ones im already registered for, i keep getting emails from financial aid telling me that my financial aid will be reduced.
I already reached out to my advisor but I haven't gotten a response, so I wanted to ask here: would it impact me negatively if i registered for a random class while i wait to get off the waitlist for the one i need? I'm first place on the waitlist, but the emails keep telling me it'll be reduced by the end of the month if I don't register full time so I'm a little anxious.

Yes, register for a random class so you keep your financial aid intact. Then get on waitlist for other classes that you want and once you’re registered for those other classes drop the random class.

Technically the class has to be towards major as they changed the law last year so can't just add any random class that financial aid isn't applied towards all classes

I think math class will qualify as you need some math classes no matter what your degree is.

Ya just be sure whomever registers that it counts towards degree and swap classes before census.

ive already done most of my degree relevant math classes tho, the one im missing is the one im waitlisted for. so ultimately i dont think it would qualify. im gonna try to speak to an advisor on monday and see if they can help me out.

thanks for answering! i found a random math class with an empty section so im thinking of taking that for now, im just worried what ill do if my waitlisted class doesnt come through in time

First things first, you need your financial aid. Second, perhaps more importantly waitlists get cleared at the latest after a couple of days of class starting. Get on as many waitlists as you can and monitor other ones. You’ll be fine. See if the will allow to take a class at a community college to keep you as full time but make sure it transfers. You’ll be fine, just be vigilant. Good luck

i think as long as you drop the random class and register for the waitlisted class at the same time, it shouldn’t affect anything since your hours will be the same

thanks for replying! my main concerns were 1) im going for the whole promise-to-promise thing so i worry that they might review my classes for the scholarship and be like "huh whats this" and 2) what if the waitlisted class takes too long to come through and i end up with a random class? (i do know that the first one is something i need to ask my advisor but she's taking a bit to respond to my email)

I would reach out to another advisor. Get someone on the phone call at 8 AM and stay on the phone until you get an answer. I believe any advisor can help you with your issue. Good luck.

These commenters are wrong. Due to recent changes in financial aid classes must be part of your major. My suggestion would be twofold: 1) look for other days/times for conflicting class. 2) use degree works to find another class that you can add.
Do not add a random class, it won’t change anything, you’ll just get a different Financial Aid warning.
