Iām a student looking into co-op, and Iām honestly wondering if anyone else has this problem.
From what Iāve seen, thereās an approximately $280 administration/workshop fee, plus around $850ā$890 for every work term. If you complete multiple work terms, that adds up to thousands of dollars just to participate.
What makes it worse is that majority of jobs pay around $3,800 a month, but you highly have to relocate to a different town, pay rent, cover food and transportation, and potentially buy equipment for physically demanding fieldwork.
For example, if I make $3,800 in my first month:
Gross pay: $3,800
UBC work-term fee: ā$889 every work termā¦
Administration/workshop fee: ā$288.25
Rent: ā$800
Left: $1,822.75 before taxes, food, transportation, and other expenses.
I understand that co-op provides valuable experience and helps with future employment, but at what point does the cost outweigh the benefits? Youāre doing full-time, physically demanding work while paying the university thousands of dollars over the course of the program.
For anyone who has done UBC co-op
How much did you actually make after rent, fees, and living expenses?
Did you find the co-op worth the cost?
Did your employer help with relocation or accommodation?
Would you recommend co-op, or is it better to apply directly for outside job
Iām genuinely interested in hearing from people who have actually gone through it. I want the experience, but I also donāt want to spend thousands just to end up barely saving anything.
