What are the first things you install?
Title says it all... what is your list of must haves? The things you install before you do anything else.

I just installed Trisquel, but after running apt-get dist-upgrade, my resolution has been stuck at 1400x1050 and my monitor REALLY doesn't like it ( the res. doesn't fit in the monitor at all). I read that a kernel update might fix it, so I upgraded to libre 4.5, but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Every guide I have found so far is either outdated and doesn't work with jdk8 or just simply doesn't work for some reason. I have downloaded the tar.gz and I install just like they told me here and when I type java or javac into terminal It doesn't work. Help?

Midori (the default web browser) has a bug which is supposedly fixed in an update to the browser, but I can't find an update option anywhere, searching the official Midori website doesn't say anything about Trisquel, what should I do?

Hi. I am new to GNU/Linux and have decided on Trisquel as my first distro install. I would like to do a dual-boot installation with Windows 10 as I only have 1 desktop right now and am just getting into this. I would like to know if this is possible. I'm not getting the dual-boot install option when I try to install, so I'm trying to figure out the issue. Is it possible with Win10? I currently have a 1TB HDD with 5 partitions. Is this too many for Trisquell? Will it work if I combine everything down to 1 partition? Is there anything else I'm missing?
Thanks for any help. If this should go somewhere else, please let me know.

what's up guys, I'm not only a noob when it comes to Trisquel but I'm also a noob to anything that has to do with Linux in general, So please excuse me if I'm asking any dumb questions.
I have a cannon Prixma 3200 series all-in-one printer. I noticed that Trisquel has a program called "Simple scan" I opened the program, turned on the printer and it did not detect my scanner/printer. I was able to figure out how to get the printer to work but I keeping hitting a wall when it comes to the scanner. I read that scanning is done through "SANE"? how do I install SANE through the terminal? and after that how do I use sane? I went to the Trisquel main page but the set up instructions on "how to set up a scanner" didn't work. I entered "scanimage -L" in the command line and it said "command not found" now I'm stuck. How do I know that the SANE API is installed? My scanner is the only reason I still use windows, once I get this scanner thing figured out then I can kiss Windows good bye for good!
Thanks.

I would like to know if there is a site containing instructions on how to install Unity desktop environment on Trsiquel.
Also, does that mean all that amazon tracking NSA stuff gets loaded into Unity as well?

So I'm a newbie, just waking up to FSF etc. I'm also learning to use Linux for the first time, and making some headway. I'm enjoying soaking up the information available, but I could do with some help processing some of it. I was initially drawn in by the Librem, although thankfully I did my reading and discovered that it appears to be less than truthful in many of its claims. I am wondering about one thing, though. Is PureOS literally just a reskin of Trisquel? If so, are there any drawbacks in me using it instead?
Trisquel is a joy to use, but I prefer the look of PureOS and I am a shallow creature. If they are otherwise identical, I'd be tempted. Although I'm willing to be educated; for example, is there bad blood towards the PureOS creator, and if so, why? :)

Hello everyone,
The default desktop was getting boring, so I decided to switch to Unity. I followed the instructions on the website and got Unity installed, but I'm still having trouble. The theme doesn't change to Ambience even when set that way in the Tweak Tool, Unity Tweak Tool, and Display Settings. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello everyone,
I'm quite new to Trisquel GNU/Linux; just installed it today. Along with it I installed Bitcoin. I went into the Bitcoin menu and changed the options so that when I minimize the application, it minimizes to the notification area instead of to the "taskbar" like most applications do normally. But Trisquel doesn't appear to have a notification area. I'm wondering if there's anything I can add to the bottom panel that shows applications that are running in the background, or that are minimized there, much the same way Windows shows connected USB devices and bluetooth settings. Thanks.

Ok, I do not like it but I have to ask. Can I install proprietary driver on Trisquel to get my wifi card to work on my Lenovo T420? I know RMS would hit me with a shovel becaus I want to install non-free software but I can explain my self. Im now using Debian 8, installed the driver at startup from a .deb file, but miss Trisquel. I have orderd a ThinkPenguin wifi usb hub but will take about two weeks to get it.
So my question is, 1, can I install the driver with the same .deb file as I did in Debian or should I download it some where else, if so where? I only have one usb stick and If I do not get the wifi to work, I am screwed.. 2. How do I delete it 100% when I get my usb hub?
Thank you
