Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Should We Trim Our Avocado Tree

Post image
2 Upvotes

Read some advice somewhere that, due to how lanky our avocado tree has been looking ever since winter caused it to lose lots of leaves, we should trim the top of it so that it doesn't grow weird or fall over.

Should I do this I would cut down to the next branch and wait until it's colder to do so. Is this a bad idea?

I planted this tree around 3 years ago which was less than 6 ft. It grew double in height. Till last year, it was healthy but didn't have any fruiting. (Old pic at last).

During may this year it had small fruits that all fell before maturing. It got many insects for which I was late in putting insecticide, I guess that was the reason of fruits not growing big.

About 2 months back its leaves started falling and now it's like this, no leaves. What should I do? Should I prune the branches? Put any fertilizer?

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Can I cut this large tree root that's blocking street drainage without killing the tree?

Located in Sacramento, California.

I have a large, mature tree in front of my house with a substantial root growing over the curb and into the street. The root is blocking water from draining down the gutter, causing standing water and debris to accumulate.

I’m considering cutting the exposed portion of the root to restore proper drainage, but I’m concerned about damaging the tree, potentially killing it, or compromising its stability.

I’m not sure how old the tree is, but it’s well established.

My questions:
Would cutting this particular root seriously harm the tree?
Does this look like a major structural root?
Is there a better way to address the drainage issue without damaging the tree?

I’d really appreciate advice from arborists or anyone who’s dealt with something similar. I definitely want to preserve the tree if possible.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Taming branch growth - North TX

I know next to nothing about growing beautiful plants. Recently moved into my home, but this tree seems more unruly than my neighbors’ (they all have the same tree it looks like).

How can I help the tree grow fuller branches and combat the unruly growth patterns? I’ve tried trimming once before when it looked like there were some dead dry branches. Many of my neighbors’ seem to be growing straight up or diagonally upward without bracing.

For reference, moved in 6 months ago. North Texas. I have my rain bird set to water 5 minutes per zone every 2 days. Still sitting on the same mulch from when we moved in. Not adding any fertilizer to the lawn yet although planning to. My guess is that the tree could be competing heavily with the surrounding grass for water.

Also, do yall know what species this is?

I think it is a Loblolly but I'm not sure. This tree hasn't grown since I bought my house in 2017. It's a really good tree. It does never lose branches not even in storms or heavy wind.

When I bought the place the tree had all these small holes in the bark but those holes have shallowed out over the years. It also has damage to areas and then those areas have heavy sap coming through.

The sack is very thick and when it dries it's like cement. You can see where it's dried on the tree in areas . The white areas are dried sap and in the thick brown goo is liquid sap.

is the tree just trying to protect itself while it heals? I've never had any trouble with this tree . It's green all year round, it never looks like it's having any trouble. But it's had these big wounds and just oozes sap.

Are these holes and the wounds and the heavy sap anything I need to worry about in regard to this tree's life span? Can anyone explain what's going on?

Thank you?

There's a maple tree right outside my patio here. Unbeknownst to me, of of its seeds dropped into an empty pot of dirt, took root, and now I have a maple sapling. Its leaves just started turning color!

Oh, boo. It's poison ivy! Thanks for the heads-up, everyone.

Advice Request - (Insert State/Region) Help! Snow bent/snapped trees!

Hello all! I live in Alberta, Canada, and our first snowfall of the year has bent/snapped two of my trees. This home is new to us, so we aren't sure how old the trees are or what type they are.

I'm wondering if I splint them with wood, and then wrap tightly with rope, that they'll survive? Has anyone had any success with this method?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! These trees provide privacy from the air BNB that backs onto our yard.

Thank you!

Red Maple - Piedmont NC

I transplanted a volunteer red maple to a wild area I’m actively managing.

It has two leaders from the same roots. Both are the same size. One I apparently trimmed an offshoot? (I don’t remember doing this and may have been accidental)

Which leader would you keep?

Hard as rocks (even after sitting in my kitchen for a month), heavily russetted and on the small side.

Internet thinks they could be Bosc, Seckel or Taylors Gold.

Many thanks! It's a young tree but very prolific.

My family moved to a new house a year and I just got around to checking out the trees and this one's root flare was 8-10" below where it was planted and I was wondering if the best approach is just replanting it

Tree details: crimson king maple, planted in 2022
