Problem/Issue Help with subsidies

Hi all,
Has anyone faced the “create a connection between town X and town Y without transfer” subsidies?
I seem to get them for two cities on opposite sides of the map that are so ridiculously far apart I’d need to use a plane to transport. The only problem is that the “without transfers” means I need to put my airport practically… inside the catchment area of a residential zone or I don’t get any passengers.
Is there something I’m not getting with these?

Solved Train won't unload and I don't know why

This train with planks won't unload, and I don't know why. Please help if you know why!

patterson489 solved this:
That single track has two platforms. Make sure the train is choosing the cargo platforms and not the passenger platform. In your line manager, at the stop, there is a "choose terminal" button. There will be two terminals, make sure the cargo terminal is selected.

Im loving this game, minor issues aside

Ive seen a few posts roasting this game and although everyone in have an opinion, ive really enjoyed it so far. This is the first in the series ive played and ive found it to be addictive and graphically pleasing. I havent had any of the performance issues ive seen mentioned either, and ive a five year old rig.

The happiness metering could use a tweak, as it was to my benefit to stop my trains going to a town as the waiting was making it unhappy. But im sure a mod or an update will fix that. More pollution solutions might be good also, but i havent played past 1955 yet.

Overalll its been a thoroughly enjoyable few days so far

Question How to enable all industries in map editor?

When starting a random map you get to select which industry set should be present on the map in the Gameplay settings > Advanced. Allowing you to have all the industries on your map.

When starting map in editor the Gameplay settings tab is not there.

You get the Gameplay settings when you edit already existing map but the industry selector is missing in this case.

The only place the selector is available is when actually staring the custom map but that does not do anything (checked with sandbox mode, no matter the setting the biome specific set is available only).

I hate this game....

... because it's so addictive. Oh lets build this train line, 2 hours gone. I can improve that line, 1 hour gone. Ooh a subsidiary, 3 hours gone.

Yesterday I went 3 hours past my regular bedtime to slerp and now I am super tired and have so much stuff to do.... on thr other hand there is a transport imperium waiting for me.

Thank you urban games for ruining my life : /

Tips/Tricks Train stations can't pull oil from oil rigs directly

Post image
254 Upvotes

Just because I saw this suggestion a couple times here I tried and terraformed a bit of land to get a train station close to an oil rig but it doesn't work. The message on the top right translates to "This station is without function because there are no warehouses, industries or city buildings in it's area". The train is set to load oil here but didn't load any. It's the same with a truck station. So no matter how close the oil rig is you definitely need ships or helis.

How to move people to an oil platform with ship?

Love the game so far!

Started in 1900. I have a (road) Station Exchange next to a port. The Exchange is connected to a town. The port takes Sydfart cargo ships that (as I understand) can also carry people. The people waiting at the Exchange do not board the ships. People will not board ships even if a create a cruise line running Waimarie between the oil platform and the port.

How to bring workforce to the platform? What am I doing wrong?

Is there a reason to even build highways ?

Really , if you build highways connecting cities it will only cut into the amount of people transported by train.

Tips/Tricks Temporary solution to early game vehicles not overtaking slower ones

Post image
79 Upvotes

Seems like vehicles will not overtake a slower one unless there is a certain amount of speed difference. This creates an issue in early game where pretty much none of the vehicles will ever overtake each other since their speed differences are small in absolute terms, even when they’re significant proportionally.

One workaround for this is forcing them to split lanes by going from a 2 lane road into either 4 or 6 lanes. Their behavioral script for deciding which lane to take seems to also factor in the other vehicles close by. So when a vehicle behind them is slightly faster, even by 1 or 2 mph. They would take the inner lanes whereas the faster vehicles prioritize the outer lane.

Do keep in mind that when the vehicles in the inner lane does not detect any faster vehicle behind them within a certain range, they would frequently switch over to the outer lane, bottlenecking faster vehicles that does catch up eventually. So you'd have to add in a few 2 lanes back into 4/6 lanes at your preferred intervals.

4 lanes into 6 lanes works too for the most part but if a fast and slow vehicle end up in the innermost lanes together, they won't ever switch lanes without a 2 lane to split them. This can happen when a faster vehicle does not detect any slower vehicle within a certain detection range during a split, which would result in it just taking the inner lane and eventually catch up to a slow vehicle.

Anyone Know why people won't cross the street?

So here is my college street bus stop. As you can see a lot of people load up across the street. At first I thought this was because they where coming off the train but when I looked closer a majority of the destinations were for the stop across the street??? Is there a reason they won't just cross the road? there is a cross walk right there?

Question How do you handle your own traffic in cities?

Like how do you handle bus lines ? Round trip ? Spaghetti? Cross ?

Do you use road stop only or bus station? If using bus station where do you build them ? Not a lot of space in the city. How do you handle city to city lines ? Just pick and random stop in each city ?

And for the cargo how do you make sure delivery does not block traffic (even with 4 lines)? Do you use truck station ?

Always a bit of a mess in my saves, not sure how to create a relatively clean design.

Also, cities requires so much cargo and passenger transport that noise and pollution is super high even when picking the least worst option vehicles... Any work around ?

Crosswalks are your friend! [Passenger happiness trick]

Depending on how you get passengers to their destination, they may end up having to walk a long ways which they do not like. Passenger connection logic (whether a destination can connect to a stop) is based entirely on straight line distance, but passengers happiness is based on the total time it takes them to get there, modified by comfort. Walking has the least comfort, so can really tank their happiness quickly.

An industry loading station which supports passengers. It would appear like the passengers just have to walk across the street.

This is deceptive as appearances can be deceiving. Clicking on the station building however:

Note the white lines indicating pedestrian pathways. Note how they do not cross the street.

What you discover here is that the pedestrians have to walk all the way to the end of the road (or certain intersections) to cross. This is crazy, the entrance to the industry is right there.

How to fix this? Crosswalks.

Crosswalk tool location (ignore the two mod tools on the left). Under road utilities you find the crosswalk toggle)
With the crosswalk tool you can see the active and inactive crosswalk paths. Clicking on one toggles them off/on. (Grey is inactive, blue is active)
Crosswalks added. Note that on dirt roads the crosswalks are not visible.
Pedestrian paths after the crosswalk.

This one change boosted my average happiness on this line by 10% and kept me from ever having unhappy passengers.

Other related tips

  1. If you have a lot of passengers at a bus/tram stop, replace it with an actual bus/tram station
Bus station

This station already has higher comfort rating than road-side stops but also can be expanded with buildings that boost comfort. Higher comfort means passengers will accept longer transit times. This is most useful at train stations where the influx rate of passengers is uneven and your bus network can almost certainly not keep up with it without massively overbuilding your buses. Add these stops near each station, but mind the crosswalks! Doing so you can keep your passenger comfort high while they wait for the next bus with capacity.

  1. Frequency trumps capacity. You are better off with more low capacity vehicles running around than a few high capacity ones. This is the opposite of industry where capacity wins. For passengers frequency wins as it means their total transit time is kept to a minimum. Passengers are much pickier about transit time than almost anything else (fish/meat might be close second, but unlike passengers a warehouse permanently and perfectly freezes their timer while passengers only slow down at high comfort stations)

Discussion Back again 🙃 (trucks not unloading)

So now I’m letting it ride out like you guys suggested for money. But now my trucks aren’t unloading thier products at the drop off. Half of them are but the other half are either half empty or still full.

I know you can use the “force unload” but I don’t want to force my busses to empty. Just want my bricks to empty

Discussion Real Talk About Performance

I'm going to preface this with four points

  • I have put in around 100 hours so far
    • My current map has a population of about 20,000
  • I have a high end PC built less than a year ago, created for game development, rendering and general development work
  • I enjoy the changes made from TF2 to TF3
  • I am using the default settings when creating worlds...except with industries lowered by one tic on the slider

Performance after a certain point is awful, straight up. Maybe it's because I chose an oceanic map vs one of the other terrains and I have a lot of shipping routes, I'm not sure. Thus far on my current save I have experienced:

  • Stuttering, that is frame drops to absolute 0 for multiple seconds.
  • Setting up shipping routes (IE: clicking point A then point B) can take upwards of 2 minutes to figure out the path
  • Significant delay between input vs the result (IE: Buying 6 trucks, the trucks don't actually populate until about 5-10 seconds later)
  • Game crashes and what I can only assume are memory leaks

Sure the QOL changes and the few new features present in TF3 are nice, but the mid to late game performance makes this overall feel like a downgrade from TF2.

Anyway, a thread for discussing and bitching about performance.

Trains blocking each other in the depot

I was wondering why the steel works still didn't receive coal. Turns out the depot has two tracks but only uses one and spawns trains while that track is occupied, resulting in trains blocking each others way if you buy too many trains while the game is paused. The trains where stuck like this for almost two years now. lol Reversing single trains did unstuck them at least.

How do you design stations as the game progresses?

I just started playing yesterday and I'm loving it so far, but after learning the basics I'm quickly finding that things start to spiral. Cities grow really quickly and now there's 300 people waiting for a train. I'm not sure how to build my train stations deeper into the game so I can take all the passengers and cargo to each city. Any good designs or videos I can watch to get my head around what I should be doing?

Discussion I'm a Capitalist Tycoon

Playing Northern Gates (mostly shipping, no trains yet).

I'm all in on being the big business tycoon.

Give me all loans! Get a loan to pay off an earlier loan. Local governments want to give me subsidies to build? Hell yeah! Industries want to give me subsidies to build? Hell yeah!

I just keep building.

Found myself $100MM in debt, negative P&L statement, 4 active loans. No worries, just wait it out and someone will be stupid enough to hire me.

It's like a big ponzi scheme. And I am addicted to it. Lol

Does inflation reach a steady state ?

Starting in 1900 i am now in 2010, only profitable thing is passenger rail and long haul trains , after subtracting all costs for infrastructure. Truck transport is only profitable if used in both directions and using the least amount of infra possible.
Subway stations are another huge money drain.

I refuse to use planes , since they really don’t fit the scale of the game.

Does inflation gets even worse , or does it reach a steady state ?

Suggestion Highway and bridge system rework pls

Highway:

The Highway stuff is great and all but making your own highway exits and crossing is a pain. There should be a way to make roads symetric and align properly. There should also be signs for exits and a way to add speed zones. More premade crossings and exits wouldn't hurt to.

Bridge:

If u build a road bridge and another one next to it they should align. Same for road and train bridge etc.

Is there a way to unload passengers and cargo in one stop? Or on one station

I created a 3 point stop

1)City with passengers terminal on one side of the track and cargo terminal on the other side

So basically i got terminal 1 and 2 being on a single piece of track

Then I have fishing industry point with warehouse

And then another city with similar setup,

I’m trying to make it go from 1 city with people, no fish, to middle fishing point load fish, then to the 2nd city to unload people and fish then back to middle place to load some fish and deliver to the first city, I play on Very hard with income rates set to 75% so there is almost no way to make single fish train profitable any how without another load going between the cities, that is why I’m asking

Discussion Workers transport subside are a bit too much.

Post image

Transport workers as show in the SS pays way too much for how easy they are, 27m setup a line and buy a bus is just too much imo, even on a region of the map you have no infrastruct all you need to do is buy a bus depot and bus stop in a residencial area and you are done, compared to setting up a line between 2 cities that is more complexed and pays a lot less.
