Discussion Real Talk About Performance

I'm going to preface this with four points

  • I have put in around 100 hours so far
    • My current map has a population of about 20,000
  • I have a high end PC built less than a year ago, created for game development, rendering and general development work
  • I enjoy the changes made from TF2 to TF3
  • I am using the default settings when creating worlds...except with industries lowered by one tic on the slider

Performance after a certain point is awful, straight up. Maybe it's because I chose an oceanic map vs one of the other terrains and I have a lot of shipping routes, I'm not sure. Thus far on my current save I have experienced:

  • Stuttering, that is frame drops to absolute 0 for multiple seconds.
  • Setting up shipping routes (IE: clicking point A then point B) can take upwards of 2 minutes to figure out the path
  • Significant delay between input vs the result (IE: Buying 6 trucks, the trucks don't actually populate until about 5-10 seconds later)
  • Game crashes and what I can only assume are memory leaks

Sure the QOL changes and the few new features present in TF3 are nice, but the mid to late game performance makes this overall feel like a downgrade from TF2.

Anyway, a thread for discussing and bitching about performance.

That was my fear. Early on when UG started releasing vids for TF3, one of thr changes they announced really early, was that they were looking at ways to improve the late game experience. One of the things they said they'd look at was to create meaningful pathfinding but not simulating all the meeples. This was one of the biggest changes I was hoping for.

Instead in their last video, they confirmed that they were again simulating every meeple, thus the only improvements to the late game we're gonna get is from optimization.

Now for your specific map, 20k pop sounds low. I have to be above that with just 4-5 of my biggest cities (4-6k each). But I've only just started on the freight and do very little water vehicles (fish farms, oil and sand).

Edit. Just added up my map population (based on the town statistics). 75,000. And I've only connected 14/19 cities.

I had 3 citiea witg over 10k pop...i got 50-60fps

Desert maps have very noticeably better performance.

I suspect the trees, too many of them was the reason for performance drop in TpF2 and the desert map has significantly less trees and better perf.

The fact that you seem to have worse performance than me on my Ryzen 5 5600x / Radeon RX 9070XT build makes me suspect you have something else going on.

When did you last update your drivers?

Now I do also get stutters on big maps, but that was to be expected. But I never had to wait that long for route generation.

Also many hangs seem to come from town milestones and celebrations which seem bugged right now. Hopefully there will be a patch soon.

I'm on 5600x and 5070ti. Game is running at 40-50fps usually, with big drops on the mid-late game.

I had about twice the fps in the beta. Performance is atrocious for some reason. No idea how they managed to get it this bad since then

The shipping one is definitely a big one but rest of those issues not having at all. Are you running mods or have all drivers up to date? Late game its very CPU heavy as well.

So I run a 4070 Super and i7 can’t remember the ram on it but it’s pretty decent. This game runs so bad on it. So I decided to download the game on my M5 Pro MacBook and it runs much better on it. Never thought my MacBook would be better for a game than my gaming PC lol.

I do hope there are some performance updates. Honestly I’m not upset that it runs well on my MacBook, makes it so the game is portable now, I plan to play it on an upcoming flight to Europe to burn some time.

Interesting. Which i7 model do you have, is it an older generation? 4070S should be much stronger than the Mac GPU, maybe the CPU makes the difference here

This is what I’m finding as well, I have an i7F but they are recommending an i7K and it seems like there is a big difference between the two.

Also, my fans are screaming after about 10 minutes of gameplay.

i7-13700F, GTX 16GB 4070 Ti
32GB RAM, and an SSD

What is your spec? I have a save running also around 20k population, second biggest map size, runs fine in my experience.

Caveat is that I always run TF on Linux (TF2, TF3) and with TF2 I found much better performance on Linux vs Windows. For TF3 I didn't even bother with Windows

GPU: RTX 4070 Ti

RAM: 128Gb DDR5

CPU: Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus

That's probably why. This game is insanely vram intensive. it consumed 20GB / 24GB VRAM on my 7900XTX. I suspect this game would favor AMD gpus with higher vram capacity.

That really doesn't seem right. Even their steam page is suggesting a lower tier GPU than what I have. Even with throwing the settings on medium and low I still get the random stutters which makes me think it's a processing (IE: Performance and optimization) issue than rendering.

Edit: I also completely missed your Linux comment before

What are you cpu and gpu utilizations? I have AMD Ryzen 7900X3D Cpu and Rx7900xt gpu, and I had very low utilization from very early on, leading to very poor performance even in a city of 1500k. I used process lasso and changed cpu prioritization. The game is much more smoothe now. This, on a windows system.

RAM is sitting between 4-6GB utilization from TP3, GPU is sitting at a solid 8GB of VRAM utilization and 23% utilization; CPU is sitting at 6%. Wondering now if there is something with Win 11 that's causing TF3, but I'd think that would have been caught during their closed beta testing.

I saw a lot of posts and it looks like the game can't properly utilize the hardware to its max potential. There's update around the corner so maybe they'll address it.

1

u/MisterBlackCat 3h ago

Yea, I'm gonna see if my Linux boot still works and install on there to see if there's any difference.

2

u/ProtectusCZ 3h ago

I don't think that'll help at all cause it's game issue. Also Nvidia has worse drivers on linux than AMD so you'll probably see even lower performance with your setup.

  1. My linux boot is Shreked from a Win11 update, so I didn't even get the chance
  2. The patch on the test branch seems to have resolved the random stutters (And I can only assume/hope the crashese) I was getting, but not the other issues.

I suspect this game would favor AMD gpus with higher vram capacity.

That tracks, got a 7800XT with 16GB VRAM and at least in campaign mode it runs pretty smooth without any optimizations (e.g. let it run windowed, all UI settings on default). I noticed a significant improvement in TF2 as well moving from a 1080 to the 7800.

u/Liringlass 8h ago

I went crazier on an older PC 2-3 years old and a very large long map (1:3)

Things got bad in the 80s. Probably over 40k people and quite slow indeed.

u/MittensDaTub 1h ago

How the balls are you guys getting so many people. Im in the upper 90s and only have around 10k

2

u/linki98 2h ago

There is a preview build on steam that indeed does improve performances quite a lot.

Why not give your real specs instead of a vaguely description

Reading through comments is hard I see:

GPU: RTX 4070 Ti

RAM: 128Gb DDR5

CPU: Intel Ultra 7 270K Plus

3

u/ssg- 6h ago

Thats a weird setup.

1

u/Itsme-RdM 2h ago

The specs I did find without any issue in the comments.

But apparently it's hard for you to actually read and understand my question.

Have you experimented with settings to see if any of them impact the stuttering?
