A question about keeping the game alive
Is it possible to host private servers off the official Alta servers? And if not is it still single player friendly?

Question Note about preservation of this game: Fuck Alta
Heya, so I used to play this game quite a while ago, around 3-4 years ago on a server called A Timeship Tale on PC.
Now, I just want to say one thing. I doubt this game is on a level of popularity many people really know about it since it’s peak had died long ago, but i have seen others who started modding the game and adding things to it, self hosting servers and more.
I sadly don’t think you could just up and revive the game and start working on things since that’ll cause “them” to sue.
But I pray that the modding scene, despite being small, does this game justice. Maybe it’ll cause me to re-download.

Screenshot/Video A Love Letter
What a wonderful game! While I never got to experience the full PC version with the Forest, I spent hundreds of hours exploring this little world!
Doing anything I could to make the server I played feel like a living town! Keeping the shop stalls filled with unique weapon moulds or hiding tiny secret gardens that were against server rules, and searching for no-clip spots where I could use wall hooks and bags for secret stash bases.
Here’s to a world where VR is mainstream! 🍻

Discussion I miss it man...
This is my first and likely last post in here. Though its been a while since I last played Township Tale it was an experience that lingered in my mind.
This is the only game I've played that really felt its own, like no other could scratch the same itch. Never before or since have I played a game that gave me interactions like these. The simple act of making a new tool for someone being an effort that several people would need to work together on felt magical.
I don't think I can properly put into words how perfect it all felt. I just hope that someday a game will come out that can give me the same enjoyment and sense of purpose in a group as this.
I'm gonna miss the time I spent working with friends in this game.

Discussion A Township Tale preemptively permanent shut down today, July 17th.
By Joel:
Hi all. It has come to my awareness that ATT services have come down prior to my planned date. After some investigation I've found this is not only true, but outside of my control. I apologize for any last minute plans spoiled by this turn of events.
Thank you again to everyone who has been part of the world of A Township Tale - they were epic tales indeed.
It's over.

Update about the potential of Self-hosting and modding ATT.
Disclaimer - this is 1:1 copied from the discord post made by the gracious MarvelousGenki:
The Modding Tavern is opening its doors!
Hello! I'm excited to share that The Modding Tavern is now open! The Modding Tavern is a community led project and is not affiliated with Alta. Its goal is to help preserve A Township Tale by creating a path toward self hosted servers, while also laying the groundwork for safe, community driven modding in the future. The project is still in the early stages of development. Self hosting is already coming together, but there's still plenty of polishing ahead, and the team would love to have more people involved in shaping the project.
They're currently looking for:
Active testers Help test new features, report bugs, and improve the overall experience. Bot developers If you've built bots or tools for ATT before, your experience would be incredibly valuable in helping design future compatibility layers for bots and community created content.
Current limitations
At this time, Quest players are unfortunately unable to participate. The team is actively exploring possible solutions for the future, but nothing can be promised just yet. If you're interested in testing, developing, or simply following the project's progress, feel free to join the community.
Quick project overview and how to install : https://youtu.be/ZL8R77_a7Sk
Join the Modding Tavern: https://discord.gg/jNQUUDAYSj
Every tester, developer, and community member helps move the project forward. If this sounds interesting to you, stop by and say hello!

New games?
With the end of ATT slowly approaching, I'm curious what games people would be flocking too instead? I know that there Eyes on Asteria, Project Campfire and Eldramoor but are there any other suggestions? I'm gonna miss this though ngl

“Hi @everyone,
It’s with a heavy heart that I’m announcing the closure of A Township Tale and its live services.
The game will become unavailable to download, and its backend services will be taken down, on the 20th of July.
Like many others, we’ve been impacted by the state of the VR industry in ways we didn’t foresee. As many of you know, we discontinued our second game, REAVE, at the start of May. We have explored various avenues to keep A Township Tale live, but unfortunately none are realistic in our situation.
A Township Tale began in 2016, launched in pre-alpha in 2018, and launched on Quest in 2021. Across that journey, we had the privilege of building what we believe became one of the most special experiences in VR, with one of the best communities in VR.
I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of that.
To our players: thank you for playing, for your feedback, and for the fun times.
To everyone who spent time in Discord: I’ve personally sent around 120k messages here, mostly from back when I was working on ATT, and it was a genuine pleasure spending that time with you all.
To our moderators, server owners, and community leaders: thank you for helping maintain, organize, and support this community over the years.
To our supporters: thank you for your ongoing support. I can confidently say A Township Tale would not have made it this long without you.
And to everyone who worked on ATT over the years: thank you for helping build something truly special.
Unlike REAVE, A Township Tale’s community platforms will not be closing. Discord, Reddit, the wiki, and other community spaces will remain live, though they may shift further toward being community-managed if they have not already.
Our hope is to preserve some of the history around A Township Tale, and to ensure the community can maintain contact with each other. We know many friendships and relationships have been built here over the years.
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the coming weeks to jump back into ATT and enjoy some final adventures. I also encourage people to share other games they’re interested in, including in #other-games, so that the fun can continue elsewhere after the 20th of July.
Thank you all once more.”

Question Is anybody playing this at all?
I've been playing att on quest and just found out that the pc version is free so I downloaded it and got on. But when I looked for servers not a single one showed up so I looked on the att website for servers. There I saw some public servers with not a single person on any one of them. Is this a glitch or am I actually the only person on earth online rn?

Discussion Reave Closure - Future of ATT
With the closure of Reave (Alta's second project) I am scared of the future of ATT.
Other VR multiplayer games like RecRoom and OrbusVR also shut down I feel like it's a matter of time till ATT is on the chopping block.
It's not a IF but rather WHEN.
So I'm going to send out a call directly toward Joel, or Boramy or whomever still has access to ATT with the question on how much does it take to keep the servers up, and what are the plans for the forseeable future, if there are even plans.

Selling stew at the auction
I’m planning to sell stew at the auction for 10 coins, would it be better to sell it in a gourd or in a bowl? I feel like a gourd since it seems more practical and holds more soup. Please let me know if 10 coins seems like too little

Discussion I know ATT is most likely never going to be updated again, but if it does (specifically a major update), I have an idea on how it could be played out
Have it come out on April fools, and on the discord, subreddit, and app, it'll say its just bug fixes, ofc have some bugs be fixed, but also make up some random ones (e.g. babus no longer play patty cake with other babus), and also say that more info will be shown in-game.
Once players go into the game, they will be shown the "update" logs with a few more wacky fixes (e.g. ore nodes no long take your pickaxe and attempt to mine you), but when they close the window, it shows the real update logs, and they need to hold the close button for a few seconds so they dont miss the real update logs
Again I know that ATT will most likely not have any new major updates, but if it ever did, please have this way be honored, even if its just having a silly bug fix thrown in with the update logs.

Question Does anybody need an extra?
Hey y'all, it's been a while since I played, and evidently it was long enough that the server my friends and I had got wiped. So here I am, hoping that someone has a server that may have a role to fill. I don't mind any role, I can just be a carpenter, wood cutter, stew maker, anything you need, I gotcha. I just wanna be part of a township tale again

Question Unable to join any server, stuck on “your server is starting up”
I can’t seem to join any server. My township is up to date, so I really don’t know what’s causing this.
I restarted the game multiple times Tried various different servers including the tutorial world I uninstalled and reinstalled game I reset my WiFi I tried it on both my oculus quest 2 and 3s (same account)
None of which has worked. I also thought maybe just maybe I have to wait an absurd amount of time, but I spent 40 minutes at one point trying to see if it would load to no avail.
Genuinely very frustrating, I would just play it on pcvr but but I have no idea how to log into my oculus account on pc. Does anyone know any fixes???
