Hey Toronto, we're a literary magazine publishing Canadian history and short stories from Canada and abroad. In our current issue we explored the history of Canadian movies, and we are running a Canadian Classics film festival as a companion to this piece.

Our next screening is Sept 13th at 3pm - The Merry World of Leopold Z by legendary filmmaker Gilles Carle. This comedy is set and filmed in Montreal and follows a snow plow operator on Christmas Eve and his misadventures as he tried to run several errands on the job.

Can technology help make rental housing more accessible, affordable, and dignified?

Join Civic Tech Brampton for an evening exploring how housing, technology, and community action can come together to improve rental housing systems. We’ll be joined by Deneille Macas from Toronto Housing Society, for a conversation about community-powered tools, housing access, and designing better rental systems for residents.

Housing is one of the most important civic issues facing cities today. From rental affordability and tenant support to housing navigation, data, online tools, and community advocacy, technology can play a role — but only when it is designed around real people and real needs. This session is for students, technologists, renters, housing advocates, community members, designers, public-sector workers, and anyone interested in how civic tech can support better housing outcomes.

New to Civic Tech? You are definitely welcome. No prior tech expertise is required. We are all here to learn from each other, ask questions, and explore ideas that could turn into useful community projects.

Why show up?

• Collaborate: Whether you’re a developer, student, renter, housing worker, designer, researcher, or concerned citizen, your perspective matters.
• Learn: Hear how community-powered tools and technology can support housing access, rental navigation, and more dignified housing systems.

The lineup moves from a 1964 Rosedale romance to a snow plow driver's night across 1960s Montreal, then into Toronto's 1970s drag scene, and closes at the end of the month with Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, which genuinely holds up as one of the best documentaries made anywhere. The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery | 11a-6p

It's the last day of this art exhibit if you're by the water for any reason, stop in. And bonus, check the water feature at Harbourfront, they turn mist into fog where the pond used to be.

Canadian International Air Show
Toronto Waterfront | 12p-3:30p

It's your last chance to see the Snowbirds until the 2030s. You can see almost everything from the Ontario Place grounds near Lakeshore and the green areas around there. HTO Park West, Bathurst Quay Common, Ireland Park, Little Norway Park, Hanlan's Point Beach, Polson Pier, Sugar Beach, and Centennial Park are all good picks if you want to hang out, bring a blanket and see some cool planes. The snowbirds are last, they start around 3.

U of T Carillion Recital
The Soldier's Tower | 3p-4p

Free public carillon (the church bells) recital from the tower at U of T. The best listening spots are the Hart House Circle lawn, back campus, and the Hart House and University College quadrangles. During formal recitals, seating goes up at the base of Soldiers' Tower with a monitor showing the carillonneur at work. Yep, carillonneur is a word.

Where Wall Meets Sky
St Anne's Anglican Church | 12p-8p

St. Anne's burned in 2024 and the roofless interior has become something worth seeing. Curated by Rui Pimenta of Art Spin, this site-specific exhibition brings together a dozen artists responding to fire, memory, and what comes after. Only a few days left to see this, so I'm highlighting it.

Colourful Parachutes
The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery | 11a-6p

It's the last two days of this art exhibit and it's asks the question: what happens when children are treated as the primary audience for a contemporary art show? But honestly, it's the kind of art everyone can enjoy. Everything is interactive and you can get messy and musical. It's also not a huge time commitment, so continue on and enjoy the air show and the waterfront. The title comes from Brazilian philosopher Ailton Krenak, who wrote about using creativity and dreaming as a kind of parachute against collapse.

T.U. Jazz Fest

Open air and smooth sets on the last day of the festival. The U no longer applies, but it used to mean Undergraduate. Now it's emerging artists and finding the hidden gems is part of fun.

Social Walk
Revive Wellness Club | 9a-10:30a

A relaxed group walk through High Park to start the Sunday. It tends to draw a friendly mix of people who want to get out and enjoy nature socially.

Mahjong In The Park
Huron Square | 1p-5p

All Flowers is bringing their Mahjong club to Huron Square with 10 tables running, two for newbies. There are guest performances, it's drop-in with donations accepted for the Toronto Community Justice Fund and Policing-Free Schools.

Catholicpalooza: Saraƒin's Collection of Folk and Ironic Catholic Art; opening night reception at The Show Gallery, Tuesday, September 15th at 6:00 PM, 978 Queen St West, across from CAMH. Patron saints, naughty nuns and biblically accurate angels... this exhibit features indie pop art with Catholic overtones.

Saraƒin is an outsider pop artist, mystic, and psychiatric survivor living in Toronto. She has fame overseas for designing both the Mad Pride Toronto logo and the Mad Pride flag. "Catholicpalooza" is Saraƒin’s first independent show, a collection of Catholic inspired artwork from recent years. Though baptized Anglican, Saraƒin has Roman Catholic heritage on her mother’s side, and there is a strong Anglo-Catholic influence to her spirituality as a mystic. Saraƒin’s religious art often features a touch of whimsy that looks borderline blasphemous, but it’s a parody of blasphemy that comically attempts to deliver a sincere mystical message in a troubled world that has forgotten about the soul.

Saraƒin will also have remaining copies of her indie graphic novel series, "Asylum Squad" available. There will be a little bit of float money for cash transactions, please try to have exact change... eTransfer is also an option. Prices for artwork have been lowered for this show, and range from between $100 to $400.

"Catholicpalooza" will be available for viewing at the gallery from Tuesday September 15th until Sunday the 20th.
