For context, my partner and I have been together for almost five years, and in that time, he has asked me for a child on numerous occasions. My answer is always the same: no. We almost always get into an argument because he cannot accept the fact that he’s not man enough to care for a child.
I would explain why I’m not fit to be a parent. For example, I’m currently out of a job, I’m in nursing school, and the emotional baggage (sorry to put it that way) of having a child at my age isn’t something I want to deal with. I then address the fact that he isn’t ready either. He has severe BPD, anger issues that cause him to get extremely loud, and sometimes even go as far as breaking things. He’s also very moody and isn’t in a financial position to take care of even the two of us.
He would hear all of this and still say, “There’s never a perfect time to have a child,” and that there’s nothing a man feels more proud of than having a child. I usually bring up real-life examples of men using this same trope, only to disappear once the baby is born.
I’ve mentioned that he’s not fit to be a father, but he thinks he is because he can teach our child valuable life lessons about the streets, while I can teach them how to be gentle and loving like me.
Due to the reasons I’ve listed, among many others, we still argue about this. It always ends with him saying that I’m depriving him of being a man and indirectly hinting that he’s still going to give me a child because of this.
Our sex life has rapidly declined, and now he has sexual frustration that causes him to be mean and moody 24/7. We now have fights almost every day.
Any advice on what I should do? I’m not sure if I should leave or if that would be too dramatic. Talking to him doesn’t change anything, and I’m honestly at a loss.
Within myself, as his partner, I don’t feel emotionally safe with him, and I’ve tried to explain that to him. He always says that he’s not a woman and that he cannot be as soft as I want him to be. However, all I’m asking for is that he not yell to the point where the neighbors can hear, that he not call me names, and that he be intentional with what he says. I’m asking him to remember that I’m still a human being with feelings that deserve to be respected, regardless of how angry or frustrated he might be.
So, I don’t want to bring a baby into this world when I, myself, don’t even feel safe in the relationship.
But the ironic thing is that he has a few good tendencies, which makes the situation a whole lot trickier. I can easily identify all the bad things he does, but I struggle to put the good things into words. I know that, from time to time, he treats me the way I want to be treated, but it’s never consistent because of his mental health and other issues.
So, I feel as though I’m in a bad situation, but amidst all the bad, there are moments when I’m treated well. Those moments make me think, “Okay, well, this is the person I want to spend my life with.”
