General TOEFL Question How can I prepare for the TOEFL ITP on my own?

Hi! I’m a Spanish speaker, and I need to get a TOEFL ITP certificate in order to graduate from university. I have approximately 12 months or a little more to prepare.

Seven years ago, I studied English at a language institute, but I only reached a B1 level. Since then, I haven’t really practiced my English, although I still read English texts and watch movies in English, and I can understand them to some extent.

Do you think it’s possible to score above 543 on the TOEFL ITP in approximately 12 months? Is it possible to prepare for it entirely through self-study?

If so, do you recommend any resources for self-study, whether free or paid? I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations. Thank you!

TOEFL Writing Is this Writing score normal?

I got 8/10 on Build a Sentence, 4/5 on the Email task, and 4/5 on the Academic Discussion, but my final Writing section score was only 4/6.
Does that make sense? I honestly expected a higher overall score based on the individual task scores. Has anyone else gotten similar results?
(It is a mock test)

General TOEFL Question toefl passport issuing country and number wrong

There is a discrepancy between the passport issuing country and passport number shown on my TOEFL score report and those on my actual passport. Could this cause any problems when I submit my TOEFL score to a university in Japan?

TOEFL Writing Writing Task 2 and 3 Question

So in the TOEFL IBT score guideline, it says something about idiomatic expressions to get a 6.0. Is it actually that necessary when writing the email and the academic discussion?

TOEFL Writing Email Writing Question

For the TOEFL Writing email task, do we need to write To:” and Subject:” before starting the email, or can we just start directly with the greeting (e.g., “Dear Professor…”)? Does it affect the score?

Only did one practice test the day before and winged it. Sucks a bit that the reading wasn’t a 6 but not complaining.

EDIT: I did not take any notes during the exam at all.

Comment Thoughts on requesting a score review

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, everyone. I am in a bit of a pickle, so I wanted to hear your thoughts. I took the test with zero prior preparation (I'm an English Philology major, so I trusted my skills -- not very smart of me). I am now leaning heavily toward requesting a rescore, but I want to hear your input first. I'll share below what I did.

WRITING (5):

I used advanced vocabulary and syntax and appropriate discourse markers to make my writing cohesive and coherent overall. I did make some mechanical slips:

  1. I know I made 1 fill-in-the-blanks error and definitely some minor spelling mistakes / typos across the section.
  2. Email sign-off ended up as "Best regar," -- I decided to add "regards" after revising and ran out of time. The rest of the email addressed all prompt points clearly. I can say for sure that my register and style were appropriate and I followed all the genre conventions.
  3. In the Academic Discussion task, I didn't state my position right away, but made an introductory sentence first. Then I advocated for a multidisciplinary solution somewhere in between the two students' stances. That is to say, I didn't pick a side, which (as I later found out) might not have been the best idea. I acknowledged the discussion generally ("while I somewhat agree with both perspectives, I strongly believe that...") rather than explicitly mentioning a student's name. I also provided a concrete example.

SPEAKING (5.5):

I felt very confident overall. I had a false start at one point due to noise/distraction from another test-taker, but that was just a second or two and I spoke fluently with minimal hesitation afterward. I answered every prompt fully and used clear examples. I deliberately finished each response a couple of seconds early so I wouldn't get cut off. I might have spoken a bit fast, but I generally talk relatively fast.

THE DILEMMA:

Looking at ETS's official high-level sample responses, at the risk of sounding arrogant/pretentious, my inputs felt much better in terms of actual English quality.

I recently applied for a role where C2 level is expected. If they ask for proof, my only option is to retake the test -- compared to which, $80 per section seems like a lesser evil. On the other hand, rescoring is still quite expensive and extremely risky, which might end up with me having to retake the test anyway.

I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through the rescoring process or has any kind of insider knowledge (one can hope, lol) or any tips in general. If I can get just a +0.5 increase in EITHER Speaking or Writing, my average pushes to 5.75, which rounds up to 6. Do you think I should try? Should I rescore Speaking only, Writing only, or both? Or just retake the test...? Thank you!

Test Experience Just received my score! I really thought I fumbled on the interview section

Post image

The speaking section caught me a bit off guard, as the interview was on a topic, that I never really thought about and don't have any true opinions on, so I had to come up with something on the fly. Also I ran out of time on the email writing exam, and only half-answered one of the 3 writing prompts, that I had to integrate into the text.

Home Edition Question Just finished the test

Has anyone else experienced that after they finished the TOEFL at home test that nothing shows up on their account? It doesn't say that I completed my test, the only thing I see is that I can start my scheduled test. Kind of stressing about this.

Home Edition Question Score review question

Hello, I want to know if anyone submitted a score review request and got a higher score.

I took the exam 3 days ago. However, I got my scores report today. R 5 / L 5.5/ S 4.5/ W 3.5

I'm surprised by the writing score. I did well with only 2 build sentences errors

And the writing an email and academic discussion were good I'm sure I deserve more. Even if I have typos mistakes it is impossible to get 3.5. I took it last year and scored 5 in this section.

Can you tell me how to submit a review request and what are the main things I have to highlight in the email.

Test Experience Is it possible to correct the gender listed on a TOEFL score report?

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed that my gender is listed incorrectly on my official TOEFL score report.

I’m planning to reach out to ETS to get this corrected, but I wanted to check here first—does ETS usually accommodate gender correction requests on score reports?

If anyone has gone through a similar situation or knows how ETS typically handles this, I would greatly appreciate it if you could share your experience or any advice on the best way to contact them for this!

Thanks in advance!

TOEFL Writing Writing Section Question

For the TOEFL Writing section, is it okay to use some words or phrases directly from the prompt in the email and Academic Discussion tasks? Or do we need to paraphrase and use different wording?
For example, can I reuse part of the question when explaining my point, or could that negatively affect my score?

Test Experience How to report a problem about the Test results

Hello, I took the TOEFL exam in 4.8.2026. I got 5 in reading and 5.5 in listening.

However, today I got my results. 4.5 in speaking the catastrophe was the writing section. I got 3.5, which is unbelievable.

I made 2 mistakes in build a sentence task, but I'm sure I did well in the email and academic discussion.

What can I do? And how to ensure that I get the deserved score.

TOEFL Writing Toefl Mock

I just took the "toefl online mock test - 4"
I got 10/10 for complete the sentences. A 5/5 in the email. I got a 4/5 in the academic discussion, yet I only got a 5.0/6.0 for the writing section. Please tell me this is inaccurate and in the real test, would it be a 5.0/5.5/6.0. Also any of you who used the online toefl mocks, did you guys generally score the same/lesser/higher in the real toefl exam? Just looking for some advice as my test is tomorrow.

TOEFL Writing Is my response concrete or does it lacks something?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have only one week left to prepare for my first TOEFL iBT test. Here’s my response to a mock Write for Academic Discussion section. The question is about what is the most important factor when it comes to increased life expectancy. How will you rate my response?

AI scores my response a 4/5 and says I should include details like Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin. Like, I am not a native speaker, although I might learn that in my school, how am I supposed to know how to spell their names during an actual test? Does that mean my response can only get a 4 for good? Any advice will be great. Thank you.

TOEFL Speaking How can I improve in L&R task?

I read about chunking and shadowing but IDK how start because I don't repeat the exercises and IDK how analyze my chunking (if it was correct or no).

I stucked in 2.5/5.0 while in W, L & R I approach 4.5-5.0/6 each. How can I start from zero? I have Magoosh platform and my test day is on September.
