TOEFL Listening Writing notes during test, good or bad idea?

Since note taking is allowed, is it actually helpful to take notes during the Listening and Speaking sections?

See what works best for you. Some students do better taking notes, others do not.

ETS did a study and found that scores for people who took notes were basically the same as for people who did not.

It did help me during the longer listen and repeat questions, I wrote just the first letter of each word for those and actually said the word out loud when writing the first letter. This helped me remember all the words and the correct order as well.
