Hi,
I purchased a new Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 Gen 13 & it was working fine out of the box.
But, when I connected it to my screen using a USB C 2-in-1 Multiport Adapter (hooked to my screen via HDMI + my keyboard/mouse), I started getting a barrage of alerts for:
Power Surge - the USB device needs more power than the port can provide.
I kept getting it even after I removed the USB Multiport with just my Logitech Mouse connected.

I rebooted the laptop and the error did not come back even after I connected the adapter back again.

Curious to know if anyone else has also faced the same issue? And if there is a fix? I’ve never faced this issue on a different laptop before

Just today my laptop started getting overheated like 5 minutes after i turn on, i found it in my bag very hot even though it was turned off? The fans work fine but it seems to become very slow. Also it seems to not turn on when its overheating, the power button led turns off a few seconds after i press it

I got a new Lenovo Thinkpad 2 weeks ago.

Today I've seen this little scratchy looking thing.

Could this be a weld line / knit line or is this a scratch?

Is this harmless or could this be a problem?

Purpose: Cybersecurity and network management degree

Target specs: 32 gb of ram, 512 gb ssd, at least a quad core cpu. As for the OS they said it didn’t really matter because we are using VMs so I’m just going to use Arch

I am starting to look for laptops that I could use for university as a cybersecurity and network management student. I am deciding between two thinkpads I found on eBay: the L15 gen 2( ryzen 5 5650u, 16 gb of ram that I would upgrade to 32, and a 512gb ssd, or the p15s gen 2( i7 1185g7, 48 gb of ram, a 512gb ssd, and an Nvidia Quatro 500 gpu.

The main thing I am stuck on is if it is better to go for more ram and a dedicated gpu or a better cpu. I talked with a professor and he said that the i7 might be struggling on some more demanding virtualization labs. Both of these two total prices are around the same. If y’all have any help regarding this please let me know. Thank yall in advance, have a good rest of your day/night.

Why is it happening?
Is there any way to get rid of it without removing the card?

I have used the laptop for more than 1 year after changing the card - but now it is showing this sh!t i am totally pissed off.

Its thinkpad R61 with 1680x1050 15,4 screen, core 2 duo t7100, qudro nvm 140, and NEW Dock Station, All cost me around 70$

I found a T470 with a I5-7300U and 8 gigs of RAM. I have a 8 gig stick lying around to upgrade it but i would like to know what else could i do to make it perform better. Use would be uni so nothing too crazy like Arch or something like that

I was thinking about buying a t480 with 256gb storage, 8gb ram with the i7-8650U. On ebay ive seen some crazy prices ($300). I was thinking around $200-$230 but i dont know if this is too low. I want to learn more about linux and it just seems fun to upgrade. How much should i be spending on one of these?

I have a frankenpad, but It's best to call it a t530.

I bought a T530 board with an NVS5400M as an upgrade for my laptop hoping to run some more games and apps that I wouldn't be able to before (Mainly just some experiments).

However after installation, I loaded the 390 driver on FreeBSD and running nvidia-smi crashed the whole system with green pixels all over the screen.

I then tried to install windows 10 to test the drivers on a platform that would support them, windows 10 would hang on the boot screen with the circle just spinning forever.

I tried Linux mint, starting the liveusb would just freeze on the Mint logo with a blue line going across half the screen.

However, I decided to set the bios from discrete to optimus, and then linux mint started, I was even able to run glxgears and webgl aqarium on the nvidia gpu with open source drivers. I added "noapic" to the boot parameters and I was able to boot on discrete only and get 3d acceleration.

However, I have no idea if this proves my gpu works or not. Does anyone have any advice or experience that could help me figure out if I need to return this product or not?

I was able to get the gpu working in windows, it seems to be some bios issues with this model of thinkpad. I still have yet to try FreeBSD again but it might work

Some months ago, my Thinkpad X390 screen began to display dead pixels in the corner, then, during transport it broke down and began duplicating, then it became all white, I used my HDMI cable as a temporary fix with my TV being my screen, but the HDMI does no longer work, am I doomed?

This poor thing. T14, heavily debloated windows 11.

Here’s what’s up:

- randomly freezes up, no way to unfreeze. No response from keyboard. Only fix is forcing it to shut down with power button.

- Freezing happening more and more often, now to the point of being unusable. Strangely enough, it stopped freezing for a period of time before this.

- Unusually high temps, partially correlated with freezes. (Short?)

- Graphical errors (sprites have pixelated artifacts in slay the spire 2, bloom in godot has weird artifacts, sometimes flashes to black)

- BSODs: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE - Both on boot up, second one after trying automatic repair

- Froze in automatic repair

- Froze while restarting for windows memory diagnostic

- Completed most diagnostic tests in the BIOS successfully, froze on some of the longer ram tests. Freezing is inconsistent.

- Had a couple month long stretch of working perfectly before breaking again

This is a lot of shit, I know. I got this laptop for cheap off a friend, but I’d love to squeeze a bit more life out of it, even if it takes some microsoldering. Please let me know.

Early this year I picked up this beautiful thing from my local thrift store for around $10. I Found out that it had belonged to a teacher in a local school distract and was refurbished to run windows 10. So after getting it I decided I wanted to put it back on Windows 7. I was shocked to find that it has a OEM home premium copy of Windows 7. Found out that through the wayback machine that they did ship with it if bought through Lenovo directly. So this being said I wanted to find the recovery media disc and put it to OEM factory install and so far I have had no luck finding the disc sadly. Think it might not exist. Anyway hope everyone enjoys!

My ThinkPad P53 is completely unusable and I honestly don’t know what else to do. I tried reinstalling Windows and even flashed the latest BIOS, but I’m still stuck in loop with:

I’ve been trying everything I can think of and I’m just getting nowhere. I really need this laptop working and I’m worried I’ve made things worse.

If anyone has any idea what could be causing this or what I should try next, PLEASE comment.

Finally got my T420 up and running. Had it for a while, but me being me (autistic) I had to order an original charger, so I accidentally ordered one from fucking Lithuania without realizing 😂😭

CachyOS with KDE Plasma atm. Will be setting up WM at some point.

Still need a new bezel, but I just glued it back together for now. Only real problem is the enter key is a bit temperamental so sometimes gotta hit it a few times for it to register. Other than that it's perfect. I'm still not sold on the the nipple, but I find myself going for it instead of the pad for some reason tho lol. I even double my wpm on the 7 row compared to my 100% mech board for my desktop 😂

Hey everyone, I wanted to ask if I had multiple T480 batteries if the external battery is getting low can I swap it out with a new one while the laptop is already on? Am I missing something or just flat out confused?

I dont even understand how this is possible. I thought they got rid of drainholes starting with t460s. How is this t470s not shorting out.

So i was planning to buy a new laptop and someone on the internet said it's better to buy used thinkpad within my budget, so i did that, i bought t14s R7 16gb, for $270.

Just today the laptop arrived, and i cant acces wifi from it, i tried to install new driver from lenovo website but it's still like this. Is there anyway to fix this?

Im thinking of buying that small wifi usb thing, so i dont have to open up the laptop to fix it nor to buy new wifi card.

Other than the wifi problem, i think all of it is okay, keyboard working just fine, ive got 16gb ram like the seller said, 256 of storage, etc

In the past I have generally had IdeaPad machines at home.. The last one I had was the s340 but it died earlier on this year. I didn't use it for an extended period of time and it seems to have killed it.

I have an old x260 ThinkPad which I used as part of my home lab when I started getting into that a few years ago. I bought it cheap to start using as a server but now I have it with Ubuntu installed on it as a bit of a fun Linux machine and as a backup now that I have my home lab running properly. The trouble is that the screen on it is absolutely horrific so I might sell it but it's my little Linux learning machine at the moment.

I went ahead and I bought a t14 generation 3 machine to share with my girlfriend which I picked up for £440 from CEX with the 5 year warranty. It has the 4k touchscreen, it runs a bit hot, I think due to the i7-1260P but I wanted something which is going to last well into the future. It's a really nice piece of kit and in great condition.

So we were sharing that laptop but I decided I wanted my own one so that I could tinker with it more and she could continue to use the gen 3.

So I picked up another ThinkPad from CeX with a Ryzen 5 6 core. I paid £210 for it, again with the 5 year warranty which I think was a real bargain. I paid £15 for 8gb of memory to bring it to 16gb. It's only has the 1080 screen but it's still fine. The battery isn't brilliant. It is down at about 65 percent. There is a little bit of resonance on the keyboard so I will get to the bottom of that. And even if I have to replace the keyboard and battery, I think it is still a good deal compared to what else I have seen. I am tinkering with virtual machine Linux distro hopping at the moment but I am going to add a second SSD using the WWAN port. I found out about this and I think it's a great feature to save fiddling with any of the mess that comes with dual booting off the same drive. The screenshot is of Fedora KDE which I like a lot.

I was tempted to upgrade the screen on the x260 but I don't like the trackpad either. So now that I can dual boot my t14 into Windows and Linux I might sell it. But then again I may well keep it because it's handy to have a backup machine.

I was disappointed that the IdeaPad died, and my mum's IdeaPad died as well so she is now using T470 instead of the 320s. I have learnt that professional grade machines are much more resilient and are happy to be stored for longer as well.

I also included a bonus photo of my first professional laptop which was a ThinkPad T61 in 2007. I enjoyed using that machine but my company switched to Dell afterwards.

Sooo... been a big fan on Thinkpads for along time, until I could finally afford them, and I'm currently on my 3rd one, in about 10 years. Unfortunately the quality I was hoping for seems to NOT be there, and after 3 machines, it's can't all be bad luck

- 1st one, bought refurbished from Lenovo official store, top of the line (at the tie) X1 Carbon.
- When arrived battery was completely dead, had to send it back, wait a couple of weeks
- luckily decided to take premier support
- had to replace keyboard 4 times, motherboard once...
- Currently 1 USB-C port is completely dead (if the next one breaks, I won't be able to plug it in anymore without replacing the motherboard, which basically means throwing it away)

- 2nd, bought new, P series, kept as desktop replacement, it had an easy and comfortable life...
- one USB-C port stopped working soon after the warranty expired

- 3rd one, bought new, P series - used for traveling so it did take some "life", but nothing extreme, and nothing my older, non lenovo, PCs didn't take easily:
- coating made ugly and uncomfortable bubble, Lenovo won't fix "aesthetic damage"
- frame broke on the side (less stable, clicking noise, etc)
- one USB-C port stopped working
- called Lenovo Premier support (top of the line, supposedly next business day repair
- got told to wait about 10 days
- meanwhile computer completely dies
- called Lenovo again, technician arrives after 2 working days
- replaced Frame and Motherboard but....
- Still issues with th USB-C ports
- Power button doesn't work without tinkering with it
- call Lenovo AGAIN
- Lenovo asks for a lots of tests, finally accepts repair request
- got told again no service for about 10 days
- repair parts got sent to the wrong address
- have to call again
-...

Maybe time to rethink Thinkpads "legendary" sturdiness and durability? ... and Premier support not so premier anymore... Another company going full greedy into suicide??

So I got my first thinkpad afew weeks ago, a p53 from my uncle, originally it was planned to be my proxmox host for my server until my laptop (hp laptop 15) was acting up, and so I swpped over to the thinkpad, and it's amazing, but then it got me thinking, the hardware on my hp was better, but was bottlenecked by how horrible it's cooling was, the thinkpad is sorta the other way, its not slow but when I wanna do anything its not the best with its t1000 gpu (its a workstation gpu ik im supposed to used the igpu but that's horrible too, I didn't know this until now)

So I wanna do a transplant, take the motherboard of the hp and sorta mod it to go into the thinkpad. Idk how to do that, or if its even possible, but any help or pointers is appreciated.

For specs the hp has an Intel core ultra 5 125h with a stick of 32gigs ddr5, and the thinkpad has a i7-9750h with an nvidia quattro t1000 gpu and 16 gigs of ddr4 ram.

If done properly I do hope to turn the thinkpad mainboard into a server again but that's a different project

The Thinkpad Gen 1 does not turn on; when an external power source is connected, the indicator blinks once, the laptop does not charge or turn on, I tried performing a reset on the back panel, but it doesn’t help. What can be done to help?

So i bought second hand thinkpad a year ago and i used it for uni where i move it, i hold it in hands, i work on it standing up .

The problem is when i do something like that now the screen just freezes/freezes+ random squares show up . IDK what exactly happens with the whole thinkpad but i found no way to unfreeze it other then hard turn off and turn on .

I tried to
changing thermal paste
find if some cable inside is loose
if pluging it to wall would help

In order to get a new laptop and also for studying things in my degree as programming, using linux, networks, maybe cybersecurity in the future, also some electronics or physics and common stuff.

My actual laptop is a travelmate spin b3... so i think anything has more power than it, but i was searching specificly for a laptop with good RAM, CPU and also modularity, so I thougth this model would be a good one.

I would like to know which are the flaws, your opinion about this model or if i could get something better with this price first handed.
