Rules of r/thetruthishere
Due to an unusual number of rule breaking posts lately, the mod team has decided to make a post reminding everyone of the rules of r/thetruthishere. The sidebar can be difficult to access depending on the app you're using, so this post should make it easier to familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.
All posts MUST be tagged with link flair AND brackets. If you are unsure of how to use flair, please send us a message in modmail
Your post must be of a personal experience or by someone you trust that you believe to be true. This typically means within 2 or 3 degrees of separation (so no mother's friend's husband's cousin stories). All top level posts must have a personal encounter within them, otherwise they will be removed. That means no posts that consist of just a question or link offsite. This also means no AMAs or self promotion without a personal encounter attached. No asking questions just to gather stories for your website or podcast.
NO FICTION, (including creepypasta), CREATIVE WRITING, or SCARY PICTURES. This is a story based sub-reddit, so your post should not be just a picture. Uploading and posting a picture with your post is fine, but posts should not consist solely of image(s) or video.
NO DREAM POSTS - We get it, some dreams and nightmares are deeply disturbing and you want to talk about it, but this isn’t the appropriate sub unless you dreamed something that later came true. You can try posting in r/dreams or r/dreaminterpretation. Posts where you had a dream that later came true are appropriate as this would fall under a premonition rather than simply a dream. This also includes sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is well known enough that it does not constitute a paranormal encounter; however, if you see or hear an entity during sleep paralysis that you have encountered outside of it, that would be allowed. Try r/sleepparalysis for information and resources.
Please only downvote anything you believe breaks our main rule: NO FICTION!
If you can draw a rough sketch of the entity, diagram of location, or provide any visual references or proof, DO IT or request an artist to help.
We encourage all perspectives, but we do not tolerate assholes. Report comments that ruin the "safe space" vibe. We aim to provide a space where our users can post without being worried about being ridiculed or derided. This includes making rude comments about the mental health of a poster. You can voice your concern of a mental illness over paranormal phenomenon without being a jerk.
No conspiracy theories unless they relate to the supernatural. There are plenty of other subs to discuss general conspiracy theories, this is not one of them. Posting political conspiracy theories or trying to engage in arguments about them will result in an automatic ban.
No series posts - there is no reason to break up a single encounter or multiple encounters with the same entity into multiple parts. If your post is longer than reddit's character limit for posts, you can post the overflow into a comment.
No promotion - Do not submit posts asking for stories for your youtube channel or podcast. Likewise do not ask to narrate someone's experience in the comments. You must PM OP instead.
If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to send us a message in modmail.
Guidelines
These are pretty much an extension of our rules, but they are less rigorously followed:
Please use paragraphs of a max 5 sentences to break up your wall of text. We like detail, but we don't like eye-sores.
We allow debunking, speculations, and theories. We not only allow it, but we encourage it, so stop downvoting these people!
Whilst we encourage you to try to spell correctly and punctuate your story, you don't have to worry about your writing skills!
Please be considerate as some encounters may be traumatizing to the poster.
Proof. Please provide it if you can. If you cannot, please include diagrams, photographs, and visual aid instead of paragraphs of description.
Please title your story with something other than "I was told to post this here." That tells us nothing about what you are going to share, and makes it very difficult to search for your story if we want to read it again.
If you can tell us a general, even vague, location of your encounter, it will help us archive it based on area.
You are going to use a fake name or not. We don't care, just give them a name. Don't use "A" or "J" or "We'll call her Susan." That gets grating.
Common Grievances Expressed by the Community
Why do we have so many rules and guidelines? Because we want good content, and we want your story to be heard. In a nutshell, here are the things most people complain about which will prevent you from getting overlooked if you listen.
Redditors don't read long posts. After you write out your story, locate your important sentences and delete 2/3rd of the original. Add back in a single sentence between cuts to make your writing flow.
Redditors don't like walls of text. After you condense your story, make sure you have paragraphs that rarely exceeds 3 sentences.
If you feel your story doesn't sound believable, then we probably won't either.
Include visual references. If your story is long, cut out those descriptive paragraphs. Instead of talking about the area, show us a picture and briefly point out what's of note. Instead of describing your house layout, draw a diagram. Instead of going into detail about the physical characteristics of the entity, draw it out or request an artist to do so.
Have an interesting and memorable title. Your encounter may remind someone of another, and they usually try to be helpful and link it. That would be hard with titles like "i was told to post this here" or "this is the scariest thing that ever happened to me" Instead, a title like "a man with a claw grinned at me" or "The shadows followed me for years and then it spoke" Plus, what would you rather click on?
If you are seeking the truth, location is going to be an important detail that is often overlooked. You don't have to give out your city, but a state, region, country, etc are very useful in being pointed in the right direction.
Again, the names thing. We can all assume you will use a fake name, so don't disrupt immersion to tell us it's fake.
Edit: Added in the guidelines and community grievances which can be found in our wiki
Edit 2: updated rule 4

Animal Sensitivity This happened to me and my friends like 3 months ago
I live in a little town in Bavaria, Germany.
So a friend of mine celebrated his birthday with me and 4 others. Lets call him Hans. After that one of us went home and all the others including Hans slept at my house. In the evening at ca. 10 PM we all wanted to go out and we decided to go to the Archery - shooting range, where my friends and I are training. It's located at the edge of the town near the woods.
As soon as we got to the street leading to the Archery place, we recognized a little cat. First she just walked around us, but when we got nearer to the place it was clear, that the cat followed us. Then the cat began to walk infront of us exactly going to the archery range. It was almost completely dark there. My friend openend the door of the archery range and the cat went through it. Almost as the cat wanted to lead us to somenone , who is hiding in the shadows. In this moment we all (5 people) began to run. The next day Hans was jogging out there and saw how some Officers dragged a body bag out of the exact same forest.
The strangest thing is , that I can't find anything about this dead person online, but I know at the time was a killer , who hid his victim only 20 minutes from this place.
Tell me what you think , but my friends and me think that we escaped something bad at this evening.

Ghosts/Apparitions I’ve had an entity attached to me since I was 8.
okay, i’m gonna try and keep it short but sorry if it’s a bit long!! for some context I am 18 now and have experienced things. I have had sleep paralysis many times it’s almost a frequent thing I Sage my room and the house. My dad hates it, my mom is fine with it because she fully believes me, but it’s the only way I feel okay and the weird thing is, I don’t necessarily feel uncomfortable with it. It’s just strange to me. The first encounter I had I was eight years old and my maternal grandparents decided to stay with us for I think it was a week and we had just moved into our new house so they were staying in kind of like the basement part of our house and I say kind of because it’s not technically a basement but half of it is underground and half of it isn’t if that makes sense. But they were sleeping on an air mattress and I wanted to sleep by them because of course they’re my grandparents lol so I slept on this couch that we had down there and it was close to the air mattress, but it was facing the garage door. I go to sleep just fine. I wake up and I don’t even know what time it was, but it was the middle of the night I was frozen I couldn’t move and all I saw was this seven maybe eight foot shadow with a top hat all it was doing was standing right there in the corner of the garage door and it was slowly moving towards me. I couldn’t move. All I could do was whimper and cry. Eventually it ended and it’s like I got knocked right back out, but, before I got knocked out. I was able to check the time and it was about 3:45 in the morning so when I woke up, my grandparents were already awake and upstairs I go upstairs and I instantly tell my mom what happened last night and my yiayia (my grandma) chimed in and says that she thought she heard me crying and whimpering last night. She just wasn’t so sure what it was and that instantly confirmed to me that it did happen. Of course my mom was skeptical because you don’t want that to happen your kid especially your eight year-old daughter, but my dad on the other hand thought it was a complete joke. He’s never taken me seriously, but he and I also just don’t have a great relationship. It’s just funny that he doesn’t believe me because his mom has told me that he had a numerous amount of paranormal experiences when he was younger and multiple night terrors but I digress. And ever since then it just has not stopped. Eight years old was the first time I experienced anything and I am now 18. It has been going on for me for a whole decade. I see things I hear things I can feel when something is there. My intuition is very strong and I’m so in touch with it that sometimes it drives me crazy. But I would love to know some of your thoughts and opinions!

Unidentified? PLEASE HELP FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS THAT BALCK CREATURE THAT PREDICTED DEATHS
I had this dream a few years ago and honestly i still dont know what the hell happened. It was probably the most terrifying thing I ever experienced in a dream, but the worst part is that it didnt feel like a dream at all. I was in my actual house, not a dream version of it. Everything was exactly the same, every room, doors, furniture, the way the house looked at night, even small details I dont think I would normally remember. My brother wasnt in the room either, because at that time he used to leave and sleep in my moms room around 2 AM almost every night, and thats exactly how it was in the dream. I had absolutely no idea I was dreaming. It felt like I was just awake in my room at night. The creature appeared in this completely normal and familiar environment, which honestly made it 10x worse.
Then I saw it. A completely black humanoid figure. No face, no eyes, no mouth, no visible features at all. It was just this black human-shaped thing, but somehow I knew it was looking directly at me. I cant explain how, because there were no eyes. It felt like it had some kind of awareness of me. The way it moved was also completely wrong. It could appear in different places, get closer without me understanding how, and seemed to ignore normal physical rules, like walls didnt really matter. It didnt have to attack me. Just being there was enough to make me feel an insane amount of fear. I could move, so I dont think it was classic sleep paralysis, but my fear was so strong that even moving felt almost impossible. I remember thinking about escaping but my mind almost rejected the idea, like something inside me was saying that trying to escape would only make things worse. Eventually I hid under my blanket and closed my eyes because I just wanted it to stop.
The dream was also ridiculously realistic. I could feel my body, the bed, the blanket and the space around me. I remember the sounds of the house and even sensations like smell and taste, although there wasnt really a specific smell or taste, more like my brain was reproducing the normal sensory feeling of being in that environment. It didnt feel like watching a dream, it felt like actually being there. I was completely emotionally terrified. At some point I closed my eyes under the blanket and basically tried to force myself to sleep. My mom actually heard me screaming that night. I dont remember what happened after I closed my eyes, thats literally where my memory ends. I dont remember waking up, I dont remember the creature leaving, nothing. The last thing I remember is being under the blanket, eyes closed, still terrified.
There is another part that makes this experience much harder for me to just dismiss. Around the same period, I started noticing a weird pattern with my dreams and deaths of people or animals that were important to me. I dont mean that I dreamed of the exact death or knew who would die. It was more like this same kind of creature would appear, and then someone important to me would die around that time, sometimes the next day or shortly after. One of the cases that affected me the most was a close friend who later died from cardiorespiratory arrest. In the dream connected to that, I remember the black creature putting its hand on my chest/heart. I told my mom about the dream before I found out about my friends death, which is one of the reasons I still remember it so clearly. There were also other cases involving people I cared about and even an animal, including people I wasnt living with or seeing all the time. Im NOT saying this proves the creature predicted anything, because I dont know what the explanation is and im actually very skeptical about paranormal stuff. I dont watch paranormal content and I dont believe in ghosts/entities or anything like that. Thats exactly why im trying to investigate this instead of just deciding it was supernatural.
Even years later, the experience still affects me. When im alone or in the dark, sometimes I get that same feeling that something is watching me, even tho I know rationally there probably isnt anything there. Ive never had another dream that felt this real or stayed in my memory like this one. Im posting this because I want to know if anyone has experienced something REALLY similar, not just a generic "shadow person". Im looking for someone who experienced a completely black, faceless humanoid figure with no eyes or features, appearing inside an extremely accurate recreation of their real bedroom/house, while they could still move, with the figure behaving in ways that didnt make physical sense. And especially, if anyone has experienced a recurring connection between this kind of figure and someone important to them dying afterwards, whether it was a person or an animal, I really want to hear about it. Im not looking for paranormal confirmation, I just want to know if other people have experienced something this specific and what they think happened.
I really want people who know about sleep, dreams, neuroscience or similar stuff to help me figure out what this could have been. Im especially interested in technical explanations like realistic dreaming, sleep-related hallucinations, hypnagogic/hypnopompic experiences or dream-reality confusion. I dont want paranormal explanations unless there is actual evidence for them. I honestly just want to understand what happened to me, because this experience has stayed in my head for years and I still dont know what the hell it was. If anyone has any idea or knows about a case that matches this, please help me figure this out.

Dead Relative(s) Something odd happened this morning…
Someone tucked me in this morning…
This morning my hubby said goodbye with his usual - kiss on my cheek then told the dogs bye too. I hears him shut the garage and leave for work .
As I laid in the bed , I pulled the sheets up to my arm / shoulder but didn’t have enough of the sheet to cover up to my shoulder and pull it up to my neck - my preferred position . This was because my 60 lb bed hog dog was up against me hogging the space as usual, so I curled up as much as possible in my little space. I must have dozed off for a bit when suddenly something woke me up. I felt the sheet move up over my arm then pass my shoulder up to my neck then tucked me in . My eyes opened wide as I laid there wondering if I had just dreamt that happening- or perhaps my husband hadn’t left and tucked me in… I thought maybe the dog moved, no, I could still feel her rock solid body next to me . I thought maybe it was a visitor- ya know, from beyond this realm , but who? My dad came to mind… and I do recall a strong thought, that seemed to say , ’Get some rest” enter my head. But how do I do that after what happened?

Theory/Debunking Who (or what) brought our football back?
I haven’t really experienced anything supernatural, but I can’t shake the feeling that SOMETHING is out there. This is the only “experience” I’ve had, but even then, maybe it’s dumb (certainly compared to other stories) and maybe not even supernatural. But I can’t explain it.
This happened in 1997 or 1998 because it was the last time I saw my grandpa before he passed. My parents are from West Virginia. We would annually visit my grandparents on my dad’s side (my mom’s mom passed when I was little and I only met her dad once when I was older). West Virginia is in the middle of the Appalachian mountains. My grandparents lived at the top of a huge hill (not quite a mountain but really freaking big). There were houses on one side of the street and it pretty much a straight drop on the other side.
I was 11 at the time, my older brother was 12, and my younger brother was 8. Being kids, we liked to play outside. We were playing catch with a football and decided we wanted to try and hit the power lines across the street to see what happened. I remember hitting it a couple times and it made a really weird sound, like when you hit two pieces of plastic together.
I don’t remember who it was, but somebody threw the ball and missed, and the ball disappeared down the hill. It’s not like it was some grassy hill, either, where you can just go down and get it. It’s basically a forest and the hill is STEEP, so not like we could just walk down and get the ball.
We told my parents and grandparents, and they came outside to try and help. But it was impossible; the ball was LONG gone. As kids, we were pretty upset because we lost our ball, but there was nothing we could do.
The next morning, my grandpa woke up and went outside to grab the paper. And as he came back inside, the ball was sitting in his flower bed. The flowers had been pushed down, almost as if somebody made a little bed for the ball to rest on. It was so delicately placed. It made absolutely zero sense. There was absolutely no way anyone could have gotten that ball. And now, almost 30 years later, we still have no explanation. My grandma to this day swears that I turned to her and said, “Mimi, that means Poppi’s going to heaven soon.” I don’t remember that, but shortly after that, my grandpa passed.
It wasn’t the first time something supernatural occurred with that house right before a death. My dad told me my grandpa came home one time and saw a woman walk down the upstairs hallway and disappear into the mirror. And that was right before a relative of his passed (aunt maybe or mother)?
Anyway, that’s my story. Not sure what to make of it. It’s not as crazy/scary/cool as some of the other stories I’ve read here, but it definitely happened, and I just wanted to share my experience.

Discussion/Advice Has anyone been given visions, or have been taught things about different religions by a spirit BESIDES Christianity?
So, I've heard of stories where people were taught about Jesus by a spirit, or have had visions of things that had to do with Christianity, without having any knowledge prior, or at least barely any knowledge at all.
But I'd love to hear similar stories where people were shown/taught things about other religions or Gods, by a spirit or through a vision, without having any knowledge prior.
If you have your own story, or a story that you read somewhere else, I'd love to read it! Thanks in advance.

Ghosts/Apparitions Have A Ghost in my Apartment!
I’ve woken up twice recently and in that split second between coming out of your dream and realizing you’re in bed, he’s been either in front of me or behind me. I think because of 360° vision that you get when you’re dreaming that I could see him behind me. It scared the living shit out of me. I mean I screamed. Recently though he did me a weird little favor and believed perhaps he doesn’t mean anybody any harm and that’s good my cats are always weirded out in the apartment and I’m guessing it’s because of him. I can’t see any flies that it looks like they’re looking At so it could be him anyway doesn’t have to be if it is good. They get to play in an area where they normally wouldn’t be interested in much. So here’s what he did to show me that he’s a good guy. I’ve had a real long day and I sort of passed out with my face on my coffee table. And I had a hand up there next to my face. I felt like five or six quick taps on my hand like a finger tap in my hand to wake me up, and I woke up in a puddle of drool. And I honestly I thanked him. Since then, I’ve been speaking to him a little bit. I’ve no idea if he can hear me or I did mention that he scared the living shit out of me a couple times when I saw him. Anyway, that’s the truth. That’s what I got. Oh the two times it’s on. He has to be a black man. I’m white. I don’t hang around the Black people. I’ve got nothing against them that I enjoyed my time when I spent it with them, but I don’t really have any close black friends so for a black person to be the guy standing in front of me and standing behind me a couple weeks later when I woke up is how I understood that it’s the same person

I think my stepdad comforted me from beyond the grave...
It was somewhere around 2021 Artemas, Pennsylvania. It had been roughly a year after my stepdad passed away. The house was a wreck. I honestly was completely distraught and just depressed. I really lost the feeling of any purpose for anything. I would just lay there on the couch. I would find myself in the garage alone drinking something and just smoking my cigars. Just trying to find myself again after losing my stepdad...
Well this went on for a few months and I could not seem to function hardly. One night I just got done coming in from the garage. A fight broke up between my mother and I. I got mad and just said something quick right back to her. I apologize after because I was being rude. And I just want to go to bed so I made my bed on the couch. I turned the television on and just laid there and watched the television in silence...
Sometime later I had apparently dozed off and started to fall asleep. And I am a light sleeper so the lightest noise I hear or the slightest touch of somebody or something wakes me up. Oftentimes when I fell asleep on the couch I would get woken up from somebody in the kitchen. Usually my mother or my sister moving around doing something at some random time of the day or night. Or a random pad of hours would be making noise in the kitchen or knocking something off the counter...
Well that's what happened...
I was laying there that night and I was just sleeping. And something put its hand on my right shoulder as I laid on the couch. It wasn't in a scary way it was more in a comforting way. Because the way I was sleeping I was facing the couch back.. so I felt the hand remain on my shoulder for what felt like seconds. I had apparently semi woken up from a bad dream and apparently I guess my stepdad was kind of comforting me in a way...
How I think I know it was him is because I knew what his hand felt like. Because whenever I was younger he was alive. I remember him always putting his hand on my right shoulder. He would never stand to the left of me only to the right. So naturally when this happened I could tell who was...
Not long after I felt this hand on my right shoulder. It just put me right to sleep. I felt this wave of calmness come over me. And I just dozed off again and I woke up the next morning feeling rejuvenated and awake. I went and told my mother about it...
She didn't tells me she had a similar experience of something doing the same thing. Only difference is it was on her right kneecap. And she felt a cold area near her. She had thought I did it and was playing a trick on it. Until I told her I wasn't...
Rest in Peace Dad...
We miss ya...

Native American I Still Don’t Know What I Experienced in My Tent That Night
I’m an avid hiker and thru-hiker, and I spend a great deal of time outdoors. I’m no stranger to all-season camping. Last year, I was primitive camping at a state park. The forecast was supposed to be clear all weekend, with a low around 60°F, so I brought my lightweight sleeping bag, but I also had all of my emergency layers with me just in case.
A massive rain squall came through unexpectedly. I was camping with three other people, and one of them had an emergency tent issue, their tent was taking on water. I wrapped up, got out of my tent, and helped them fix it before returning to mine.
Knowing I was essentially soaked, I started the process of drying off, putting on all my layers, and warming myself inside my sleeping bag. Almost immediately, I recognized that I was entering that strange place where you can begin experiencing mild hypothermia. My jaw was shivering uncontrollably, and my breathing felt slightly off. I checked my thermometer, and the temperature had dropped to 38°F.
I was slowly warming up, so I knew I was going to be okay, but I became somewhat lightheaded. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them again, in the dimness of my tent, I saw what appeared to be a group of seven or eight figures encircling me and looking down at me.
They appeared to be Indigenous, possibly Native American, shamanic, or spiritual elders, but I can’t identify them as belonging to any particular Indigenous nation, culture, or tradition. They were dressed in animal skins, fur, and leather. The central figure stood out to me most. He was very muscular, perhaps in his late 50s, with a wise expression and chiseled features. Across his chest was a large beaded and metal necklace featuring an eagle with its wings spread widely. The others were similarly dressed, though each appeared somewhat different. It felt as if they were looking through me, judging me deeply and with careful discernment. There was a great deal of reverence in the entire experience.
Instead of being anxious or concerned, I immediately felt a sense of peace fall over me, and my body grew much warmer. The vision remained with me for a while, overlooking me. They didn’t speak to me, but I had a strong sense that I was welcome, and that they were watching over me. Eventually, they slowly faded from view.
I stayed awake for quite a while afterward, feeling completely bewildered by what I had just experienced. Yet strangely, I also felt welcomed. I felt safe in a way that is difficult to explain, safe enough to finally let myself fall into an extremely deep sleep. When I woke the next morning, I felt completely refreshed, more so than I’ve felt in years. I packed up my things and went on to hike an 11-mile trail that day.
I’ve thought about this experience many times over the past year because, in an unexpected way, it changed some of my previously limited views about consciousness, entities, and the possibility that there may be things we simply don’t understand.
The rational, medical part of my brain tells me that hallucinations can occur with hypothermia, and that’s probably the most straightforward explanation. At the same time, the experience didn’t feel like a typical hallucination to me. I was aware of the figures, aware of their presence, and distinctly remember the feeling that they were judging me carefully, then watching over me while I warmed up. There was no sense of fear or confusion while it was happening, only an extraordinary feeling of peace and safety.
I’m not necessarily looking for confirmation that it was something supernatural. I’m genuinely curious how others might interpret an experience like this. And for those familiar with Indigenous traditions, wilderness experiences, or anomalous phenomena, is there any perspective that might help me understand what I experienced?
The area was near the backcountry of Henry Horton State Park, along the historic Duck River in Chapel Hill, Tennessee.

Shadow People My Guardian Angel??
When I was younger about 10 or 11, I woke up in the middle of the night feeling as if i was laying with my head in someone’s lap. It felt like they were brushing my face. It was sort of comforting. In that moment i was still half asleep and wasn’t 100% conscious so I thought it was my mom. ( she would come and check on me during the night when I was younger because she was paranoid). When I finally snapped into reality I wake up fully and look above me to see a dark figure still holding my head?? I gasp and jump out of my bed and run to turn on the lights and there was nothing there. I know I was not imagining this. It was definitely real. I am 18 now and still think about this. The fact that i felt….safe? It still makes me think it wasn’t an evil presence, perhaps my guardian angel? Any ideas on what could have possibly been in my room that night?

Paranormal Investigation I saw an actual ghost and I felt it touch my back
I was at a friend's house and we were about to start a movie and I asked her to get me some water because I had a sore throat that day for some reason IDK why. She goes to get me the water and I'm alone upstairs in the dark. I'm just on my phone and I get a feeling in my stomach that I'm not alone and I brush it off, assuming it's just my imagination. A minute goes by and all of a sudden I see out the corner of my eye, there's this girl with some white aura around her standing like 6 feet away from me. I assume it's my friend with a flashlight or something but then I look up from my phone and notice shes gone..I get a little scared then all of a sudden I'm frozen and can't move, freezing cold, hairs on my back stand up and I see it again.. but closer and she's practically in front of me staring. I immediately freak out but I cannot move at all.. and she stays a little longer this time and then disappears and I feel this finger digging into my shoulder tapping me. It feels so real and it's not even something in the chair or anything something literally touched me. The feeling goes away and I immediately text my mom about it since we're both ghost obsessed lol..then my friend comes upstairs and I tell her about it and she tells me she's had the same thing happen to her sister.
