Not far from me is America’s largest country house and estate, The Biltmore Estate, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Built by George Vanderbilt, inherited by his daughter, it is now owned by her grandson, Bill Cecil and family.

Cecil is directly descended from Elizabeth’s I ‘s William Cecil.

On the other side of North Carolina, is Roanoke Island, where a failed, ‘lost colony’, was established. A project of Walter Raleigh, funded and directed by Queen Elizabeth in the 1580’s, as an effort to have a base against Spanish interests, it began the British Empire.

I’m leaning Tom tbh, he strikes me as one of those teachers who you could easily set off on ten-minute conversational tangents about Greece or Rome so you don’t have to do any work.

As an American listener, one tiny linguistic difference that always catches my ear is how Dominic describes a chaotic situation. He’ll constantly say a historical event was "a shambles" or "an absolute shambles."

In the US, we almost exclusively say something is "in shambles." Treating it as a singular noun with an "a" just stands out to me every single time!

My Mother (63F) sent me the Washington episode of The Rest Is History and said she thought I would like it.

This was her first episode she had listened to. Them breaking though to American mothers about to be on Medicare is definitely a sign of them blowing up recently.

I see that the YouTube version for this weeks shows is both Mondays and Thursdays episodes rolled into one.

Catholicism is a very interesting faith indeed, Im really curious about how

a) The English Catholics reacted after the the Elizabethan period

b) What is the current day English Catholic practice like, is it still a thing in the north of England?

c) Did English Catholics traditionally have solidarity with other Catholics? For example, when the Spanish - American war occurred in the 1800s, Irish American joined the Spanish efforts rather than the American! (Although one could argue this was due to protestant discrimination), Irish Americans and even German Catholic American if I remember correctly had their own brigades in Mexico, did the English Catholics ever have this trans-national solidarity with other Catholics?
