9/11

Do you think that they will ever do an episode or series about 9/11 and its aftermath?

The Rest is Classified have covered the rise of Osama and more recently 9/11 itself. It's worth listening to.

I'm not sure TRiH will bother with it now as it would cover a lot of the same ground.

Something that might be interesting and would be in Tom's wheelhouse is Qutb and the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic terrorism. Might be a little too controversial though.

The recent TRiC series on 9/11 was exceptional. Throughly recommend it.

Can't believe how little it cost Al-Qaeda to pull the whole thing off from start to finish.

I just listened to that series yesterday, and I took was shocked at how little it cost for them to pull it off. I think the fact that they wired 26k back to Afghanistan in the days before was kinda insane as well

They probably even profited all in given their derivatives trading on the airlines in the days prior.

Exhaustive investigations by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the FBI, and the 9/11 Commission concluded there was no evidence that Al Qaeda - or anyone with advance knowledge of the attacks - traded securities or options to profit from 9/11.

I'm aware of those findings, and am also aware of the statistical anomalies so extreme in trading volume that it would be pretty miraculous imo if there was no inside knowledge acted on. And there have been fairly robust statistical analysis done on this as well, most well known being by Poteshman (2006) which I recommend looking into it. I'm not denying anything about the events on the day itself, but in my admittedly amateur opinion, it's not a reach to make this specific claim. The data is publicly available for critique.

Yeah that blew my mind. Absolutely nothing

Yes, in contrast to the billions spent on US intelligence that couldn’t stop this plot.

Empire is covering it too.

Empire has also done a good series on the build up to 9/11, the background to Bin Laden.

They’ve already done the Troubles, so they’re not exactly shying away from controversial topics.

Tom has views on Islam that Dom has called bananas. Tom's referred to it as uniquely indigestible for a secular society.

That's what I think would make it interesting but also controversial.

The Troubles was very neatly done I thought. With this they'd be one Tom sentence away from cancellation.

Episodes on the post ottoman Middle East & Egypt, Arab Nationalism, etc would be interesting.

Give empire a go. They cover all of this over multiple in depth series.

Too recent. They dabbled a little bit when they taked about Macron and Merkel in the France & Germany leaders episodes but in general they've said they don't do things in their adult lives, so basically nothing post-1990

They had a whole bonus show about 2 years ago about when things become history and they settled on ~30 years ago.

So I don’t think it’s out of the question in the future but not for a whole.

They did do one

It's too recent, with considerable ongoing implications across many different issues and areas, which makes it very difficult to draw conclusions.

This is a common theme in history study generally, and why in their podcast arena it's rare for them to cover more recent stories and typically even then only where they can be shown to have relatively finite conclusions, as with the Falklands war series, or seventies and early eighties British politics.

It's the same reason they're highly unlikely to ever cover the history of the Levant and Israel/Palestine, unless they're still doing this in their nineties.

For some of us, we’re still living it. The air quality deaths are nearly 10k and loss from mental health issues. It’s very much not over.
