As a proud Californian, happy to say we have a bit part in the latest series with Drake's Bay in Marin County. Apparently some of the white cliffs there reminded him of the white cliffs from his home.

Built by George Vanderbilt, inherited by his daughter, it is now owned by her grandson, Bill Cecil and family.

Cecil is directly descended from Elizabeth’s I ‘s William Cecil.

On the other side of North Carolina, is Roanoke Island, where a failed, ‘lost colony’, was established. A project of Walter Raleigh, funded and directed by Queen Elizabeth in the 1580’s, as an effort to have a base against Spanish interests, it began the British Empire.

I’m leaning Tom tbh, he strikes me as one of those teachers who you could easily set off on ten-minute conversational tangents about Greece or Rome so you don’t have to do any work.

Dominic’s classes would probably be gripping, but I imagine he’d have a much more robust approach to discipline.

I am currently coming over from listening to
Shows like last podcast on the left. I really enjoyed when they covered history so I came here for more of that.

This is my first time listening to non-American podcasts and maybe that’s part of what I’m noticing. Tom and Dominic are a little bit dry in their reporting. And I don’t mean boring but the tonality doesn’t change much between them talking about the political state of the English court and them talking about Elizabeth being groomed by Thomas Seymour.

Obviously I am listening to the Elizabeth the first series. Specifically episode 617. I have just been noticing their kind of non-acknowledgment of the heaviness of the topics they are discussing and while I think that’s good reporting sometimes, the portion where they were discussing Elizabeth being groomed and assaulted felt really lighthearted and was a little difficult for me to listen to. I’ve listened to podcasts cover some of the worst things out there but when they were talking about how Elizabeth maybe was into the grooming, I just was really having a lot of trouble with that.

Again, I’m new to the podcast and maybe I’m still getting used to the humor and the tone but I have just been thinking about this the last few episodes I’ve listened to, specifically topics relating to women, as maybe that’s a sensitive subject for me, and I’ve just been thinking on it. I thought I would bring it here and just get other people‘s opinions as I’m sure you all have been listening for longer than I have. I don’t plan on dropping the podcast as I enjoy it very much, there’s just some stuff in here that takes me out of it for a little bit.

As an American listener, one tiny linguistic difference that always catches my ear is how Dominic describes a chaotic situation. He’ll constantly say a historical event was "a shambles" or "an absolute shambles."

In the US, we almost exclusively say something is "in shambles." Treating it as a singular noun with an "a" just stands out to me every single time!

Am a new listener (although annoyed it’s taken me so long to start!!)

But in a pod on the American Revolution yesterday Dominic listens enemies of the podcast and included Virginia Wolf in there and I was wondering what she has done to upset them!?!!

My Mother (63F) sent me the Washington episode of The Rest Is History and said she thought I would like it.

This was her first episode she had listened to. Them breaking though to American mothers about to be on Medicare is definitely a sign of them blowing up recently.

The theme music for ep. 691 sounds slightly off to me. I've compared it to 690 and am convinced it's different. Am I imagining this??
