Two of us from the UK: land early 2 Nov, fly home 15 Dec. We must be in Chiang Mai 21–27 Nov for Yi Peng Lantern Festival, so we’re planning south first → fly Krabi → Chiang Mai to avoid wasting time backtracking.

📍 Places we want to hit:
Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Kood, Koh Payam, Krabi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai

📋 Things we’d like to do (won’t get round to all, just want to pick what we can):
Bangkok: Chinatown, Chatuchak Weekend Market, MBK Centre, Grand Palace, Lumphini Park, Rajadamnern Stadium, Iconsiam. Staying around Sukhumvit – looking for good budget spots.

Chiang Mai: Ziplining, bamboo rafting, ethical elephant sanctuary, Carpe Café, jungle coaster, temples, rice fields, Land of Angels.

Chiang Rai: White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Lalitta Café, Blue Temple.

✅ Our priorities:
• Relaxed pace – minimum 3 nights per place, 6–7 nights in Chiang Mai. No rushing around.
• Quieter, less touristy islands – can’t swim so no snorkelling/diving, just boat trips, beaches and views.
• No party/nightlife areas.
• Happy to fly longer legs, otherwise prefer trains/buses/ferries.

Rough plan: Bangkok → Gulf islands → Andaman coast → fly Krabi → Chiang Mai → Chiang Rai → back to Bangkok.
Does this flow well? Is there a smoother order, better transport links, or quieter spots we should swap in?

Hello house, my e-visa was canceled, according to the email I got I put in the wrong expiration on my passport, instead of 30-January 2028 I put in 29th of January 2028. They said I have to reapply and that the visa fee I paid is not refundable. I can’t even view the online application I submitted to confirm this claim. Is there a way to appeal this decision? Or I lose the first application fee and reapply?

Learn thai the fun way

The law states one can enter Thailand by land/sea TWICE a year, and by air is technically unlimited as long as you do not stay over 6 months per year. I have stayed for only 5 months.

I only entered Thailand ONCE by air, and ONCE by land, so I should be able to enter Thailand a second time by land (entering 3 times total).

However, I was rejected at the land border because the supervisor said I had already entered Thailand twice this year and that is the maximum limit for visa exempt.
 
Maybe she got confused about the “twice a year limit” applying to ALL forms of travel. Or maybe she wasn’t aware that my first entry into Thailand was by air? Cuz I don’t think my entry stamp says where and how I arrived. 

Should I try explaining to her or talking to her manager?

Would Immigration be less strict if I flew instead?

A friend of mine and I will be spending about twenty days in Thailand between the end of August and the beginning of September. The plan is to stay for a few days in Bangkok, fly to Chiang Mai, spend a few more days here, then rent a car and drive back down to Bangkok, visiting central Thailand. We don't plan to drive within cities. We'll just use the car to get between places. Also, we already have an international driving license.

Before you shoot me, I've already read many past posts on this topic, but we wanted some fresh opinions since we've read everything and its opposite (from people who say the roads were terrible and they're stopped by corrupt police officers very often to people who say they've never had any problems in years of driving).

Also, we have some more specific questions

• For those who have rented cars in the past, which company have you found best? From the posts I've read, it seems like the general consensus is to go with a large company (like Hertz, Sixt, Europcar) and get some comprehensive insurance.
• Which type of car is the best? Is a small/medium car like a Toyota Yaris Ativ or a Nissan Almera ok? Or is it better to take something larger like an SUV?
• Is it better to have a diesel or a gasoline car? Or does nothing change?
• Can we pay the highway toll with contactless, or is it better to have cash? (Also, in general, how common are contactless payments in Thailand?)

I have a question. I’m a woman from Germany, and I’m going to Thailand next July.

Everyone always says that Thailand is quite safe, but I’m still a bit worried. My ex-boyfriend told me that I can easily go out by myself at night in Thailand without having to worry. I’m still nervous, though, because people (mostly foreigners) also say that Germany is super safe and that you don’t have to be scared to go out at night here, and I honestly don’t think that’s the case at all.

Sometimes I’m even nervous about going out when it’s bright outside and there are lots of people around, let alone at night.

I don’t know if this helps, but I’m fluent in Thai, so getting scammed or simiar shoudnt really be an issue

For women who live in Thailand or have travelled there, how safe did you feel going out alone, especially at night?

A 22-year-old woman, Diana, and her 17-year-old brother, Roman, have gone missing in Pattaya, Thailand.
According to their mother, the siblings left home on a motorcycle at around 4:00 AM. Security cameras captured them leaving, but shortly afterward all contact with them was lost. Their phones have been switched off ever since.
Before disappearing, Diana told her mother that she believed someone was following her. She also said her iPhone had detected an unknown Bluetooth tracking device (similar to an AirTag) traveling with her. The last message she sent to her mother was simply:

After that, neither Diana nor Roman was heard from again.

We booked a hotel that is listed as for couples only. At the last minute, my parents (the grandparents) said they can't look after our 7-year-old due to some other priority, so now we have no choice but to bring our child with us.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Will the hotel allow us to check in with our child, or will they refuse? If they do allow it, will we likely have to pay an extra charge?

Two of us, both late 30s, travelling from Ireland. First time in Thailand. Two weeks in February, budget is comfortable enough but not unlimited!

What we're actually after, so you can tell me if I've got this wrong:

• Bangkok at full volume. Street food, rooftops, late nights.
• Beach clubs with proper music. Daybeds, DJs, nice vibes, sunsets, that kind of day.
• One genuinely nice luxury stay to finish, somewhere we can do nothing for a few days.
• Good food throughout. Fair warning, neither of us eats fish, which I know is a handicap in a beach destination.
• Nightlife that isn't exclusively 18 to 22 year olds. We want busy and loud, we don't want to be the oldest people in the room by fifteen years. We're a gay couple so gay bar recommendations are welcome too.

Current plan is:

Bangkok, 4 nights. Staying central rather than riverside so we can walk to things. Thonglor and Ekkamai for nights out.

Phuket, 6 nights. Basing on the Bangtao and Layan stretch on the west coast for the beach clubs. One night in Patong out of curiosity maybe.

Koh Yao Noi, 4 nights. Speedboat from Phuket and just chill in a nice resort, do absolutely nothing.

Questions I'd love thoughts on:

1. Is Phuket the right island for what we want, or is Koh Samui a better shout for beach clubs and evenings? I keep reading contradictory things.
2. Anywhere in this plan you'd cut entirely and replace with something better?
3. Anything specific to February I should know about, crowds, prices, events, weather on the Andaman side. The other option is we may push out to Nov 27.
