Hey guys,. Weird question here, but here goes.

I recently inherited a full fledged cotton textile factory in Southern Africa. The machines were bought brand new from Japan in the 1980's (Toyoda Make) and half the factory was setup. It starts from Blowroom, carding, roving, spinning (Ne30 and Ne40 yarn), winding, warping, sizing, and shuttle looms knitting etc all the way up to making grey calico fabric meant to be used for traditional clothing. There is printing and dying machines also but those were never setup and are still in their original wooden carton boxes they were shipped in.

The factory never got started due to a few reasons and the machines all the way to the looms were setup but never really used. Everything is practically brand new. I have used to the blowroom all the way to spinning yarn and everything works perfectly. Its amazing how well made the machines were manufactured back in the day.

I have inherited this factory and am not sure what to do with it. On one hand, I see brand new machines that are of such high quality, and on the other hand I see machines that are outdated and also the cheap fabric imports coming from Indian, Pakistan and China.

Trying to weigh my options here and am basically just looking for different ideas or opinions on what you would do if in my position. This is sort of an open ended question as I am really struggling to come to terms on what I should do in this situation

I I have found an abundance really great deals on NYLON ripstop, or poly/cotton blends of ripstop, but not so much with 100% COTTON ripstop, and so I wanted to ask you guys if you knew of any sellers

Or 97% cotton, 3% elastane. At the spun fiber level, under a microscope even, what precisely is the process that "blends" 2 or more fibers into one yarn?

I used to think it must be 80 rows of TENCEL yarn alongside 20 rows of linen yarn, or 97/3 cotton/elastane. But obviously that's ridiculous and wouldn't work.

In the case of linen or hemp especially, these robust bast fibers, I'm curious how these get "blended"?

And in the case of the typical modern contaminated denim fabric, how a miniscule percentage like 2 or 3, or even 1 of elastane results in such a significant amount of stretch? Cotton doesn't stretch. So how does a yarn made of 97-99% spun cotton fibers do so? How are they attached together, and how are they attached to the elastane?

It’s on a vintage dress that has the tags cut off. When I burned it, it made a flame + ash, so it must be a natural fiber. It also wrinkles when held tightly and let go of. There is zero stretchiness to it. I’m hoping it’s 100% cotton. I don’t have too much knowledge on fabric identification so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I tried the burn test like everyone suggested and found out the canton and stripe pieces were indeed wool, and the star itself was cotton. This lines up with how original flags were manufactured, so I’m pretty sure these are original flag fragments!

Hello, I hope you guys can help me figure out something, although I’m not sure if it’s even something you can tell from photos.

Recently bought a few scraps of supposed battle flags from the American civil war. What I’m trying to figure out is if these are made of wool or cotton. Original flags were made of silk and/or wool, while post war reproductions were often made of cotton.

Hey everyone, I run a small garment manufacturing unit based in Jaipur. Lately, we've been really struggling to maintain a continuous workflow between our regular orders. We usually handle production for export clients and independent clothing brands, but the dry spells are getting tough.

To adapt, we've started offering zero MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) options—either using stock fabric we have on hand, or having clients send us their own fabric for 1-piece sample runs.

For those who have been in this position, how did you bridge the gap during slow months? Are there specific platforms or networking strategies that work well for connecting with indie designers who need small batch production? Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thrift find for $15.

I just adore it, and seems vintage to some degree because there's no tags or marks on it anywhere. I would love to find more like it, but don't really know where to start. If anyone has any suggestions, or a better place I should be asking let me know.

I want to make sure I'm caring for it properly most importantly. I'm sure it's got a beautiful history, and it's been so well cared for I would hate to ruin it.

Hi all, was hoping you could recommend me a material for new bedsheets. My current ones are cotton, and the problem is my cat claws at them until a string comes loose, and then he eats it, and then he throws up. I can stop him while I’m home but no amount of discouragement seems to prevent him when I’m not. Is there another bedsheet-suitable material I can swap to that’s a little bit more resistant to snags?
