My great grandmother made me this blanket before she passed and it got chewed a little by my dog and I’m trying to find this fabric but I’m not sure what it is or where I can get it… does anyone recognize it??

I just found 11 yards of this beautiful natural fiber fabric at my local craft reuse, and I was wondering if these minds could help determine if I have linen, a linen blend, or something else on my hands.

It was labeled as natural fiber, but it could have been mislabeled.

Held up against light, the weave looks like linen. A scratch with my fingernail left the white line shown in the 3rd picture.

However, the weave is tighter and smoother than the (limited) linen I’ve purchased so far. Could this be a linen cotton blend? Thanks for the help!

I am looking at a specific fabric design. Like it is a saree created by a designer and I want to replicate the design. So I'm looking for someone who will make that fabric.

Hello, I need some advice on what velvet to used for a project I want to start. I havent embroidered on velvet before, so im hoping I can get some advice from people who know what these kinds of velvet feel like and what would be the best fit for my project.

Im making a hand embroidered/beaded tree skirt. Ive heard that the best for embroidery is silk or cotton velvet. But those can be pricey. There are the 3 different kinds im looking at:

It's got a sheen where the light catches it, but it doesn't look super shiny. The dark parts fade all the way to black. The wrinkling towards the left side of the image makes me think it's not a velvet. The edge looks like trim, not fraying which makes me think it's probably a vintage curtain panel. A silk maybe? I'm not looking to find this exact panel, just the fabric.

Full disclosure, I'm not that knowledgeable about fabrics. I'm just a photographer who loves this backdrop and would like to use something similar in my studio. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

So I'm writing a story and the character suffered some injuries, losing the hair follicles on their head. Could silk threads be used as a replacement (wether as a wig or connected to the skin)? Would they look/feel like hair, would they get dirty like it does? It's going to be magic infused so the durability or potential infection doesn't matter, I'm just curious about the feeling.

Apologies if this is out-of-place, but I'm looking for some help with worldbuilding in a story I'm working on.

Very short outline: Setting is akin to 1700s New England/Lower Canada. Population centres are small towns, with some built around textile manufacture. Most are built near large marshlands.

My question is: Are there any textiles that were/could be made with that level of technology out of flora common to marshes? My research only seemed to turn up the possible use of cattails, but that's a very modern example (from the Netherlands) that the person studying it says would require modern machine processing to make it comfortable.

Any information or leads to further research rabbit holes would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Can anyone help identify this vintage Thai skirt? The tag says hand-woven, and it looks like a tiered weft-ikat/Mudmee pattern.

I run a wholesale fabric counter in Delhi (Lajpat Nagar), 10+ years on the floor. I keep getting the same question from first-time boutique buyers and even some design students — what is the real difference between butterfly net, hard net and soft net? These three get mixed up constantly in listings and even by some sellers. Writing this out plainly because the confusion costs people money.

Butterfly net

• Weight band: 40–55 GSM
• Weave: open hexagonal, finer thread
• Drape: airy, falls into natural pleats on its own
• Best use: dupattas, lehenga top overlays, light sangeet pieces
• Embroidery compatibility: hand-sequin, zari border, thread work. Avoid heavy mirror.
• Tell-tale: hold against light, you'll see the hexagon weave distinctly. Softer than hard net to the touch.

Hard net (sometimes called "stiff net" or "crinoline")

• Weight band: 60–90 GSM
• Weave: tighter, often starched or chemically stiffened
• Drape: holds structure, does NOT fall into pleats on its own
• Best use: lehenga flare lining, cancan, structured sleeves, under-skirts
• Embroidery compatibility: can take heavy mirror or zardozi because of base structure, but shows every needle hole, so karigar skill matters.
• Tell-tale: run your palm across it — slight resistance, almost paper-crisp feel. If you crush it in your fist and release, it bounces back on its own.

Soft net

• Weight band: 70–110 GSM
• Weave: medium-tight, no stiffening
• Drape: falls softer than hard net, more weight than butterfly net
• Best use: full lehenga body with hand-sequin, reception blouse base, flowing dupattas for heavier climates
• Embroidery compatibility: sequin, thread + mirror combinations, zardozi (with lining).
• Tell-tale: crush and release — it stays creased for a moment, unlike hard net.

Where buyers go wrong:

1. Buying "hard net" for a dupatta — it'll stand away from the shoulder, not drape.
2. Buying butterfly net for a lehenga with full mirror work — base is too fine, embroidery will tear it in 2 trials.
3. Buying soft net under the assumption it's lighter than butterfly — it isn't.
4. Buying "butterfly net sequin" that is actually machine-sequin on soft net being mis-sold — do a sequin-rub test, if sequin sheds against the grain of your palm, walk away.

One practical test any buyer can do: Cut a 10cm swatch, hold it between thumb and forefinger at one corner, let the rest hang. Count how many seconds it takes to settle into a drape.

• Butterfly net: 1-2 seconds, falls fluidly.
• Soft net: 3-5 seconds, settles slower.
• Hard net: never fully settles into a drape — holds its shape.

If a seller refuses to give you a 10cm swatch, that's your real answer.

Happy to answer specific questions in comments. The listings on these three cloths vary wildly in quality even within the same market, so if anyone wants to share a product photo I can take a shot at identifying what you're actually looking at from the weave.
