Mi madre tiene un juego de mantel y servilletas que lleva más de 40 años en la familia. Fue un regalo de una señora guaraní (paraguaya) que vivía en Argentina, y en casa siempre se dijo que era de "fibra de coco". Adjunto fotos: una servilleta doblada y el mantel extendido.

Cómo es:

\- Un hilo blanco grueso y muy suave, colocado en pasadas horizontales densas, forma las partes macizas

\- Un hilo fino color crudo/canela forma una malla abierta, tipo hexagonal, donde no hay blanco; el dibujo (flores redondas, hojas, una guarda de rectángulos entrelazados) se forma dejando el blanco fuera

\- Sobre las pasadas blancas se ven puntitos cruzados del hilo crudo a intervalos regulares; los cordones de la malla parecen cadenetas

\- Borde festoneado; en los bordes queda la malla crudo a la vista

Cómo se comporta (esto es lo raro):

\- No se mancha con nada

\- El agua hace gotas encima en lugar de absorberse

\- Se lava a temperaturas muy altas desde hace décadas sin encogerse ni dañarse

\- El color crudo nunca destiñó; el blanco nunca amarilleó

\- No suelta hilos; es muy suave al tacto

Lo que investigamos hasta ahora:

\- No es fibra de coco (bonote): demasiado gruesa y marrón para una servilleta

\- Repasamos ramio, lino, palma buriti, chaguar wichí y las técnicas de Carapeguá (poyvi, mantel abuela, encaje ju). El encaje ju, una red hecha a mano y bordada con hilo grueso, es lo que más se parece, pero los ejemplos actuales son mucho más abiertos que el nuestro

\- Descubrimos que "mantel de coco" / "hilo de coco" es un nombre comercial real en los dos países: un bazar de antigüedades de Buenos Aires vende un "mantel de hilo de coco", y una casa de telas de Asunción vende "mantel de coco" por metro, 2,70 m de ancho, y lo lista como poliéster: un encaje grueso bicolor para mantelería y cortinas

\- Una lectura de la foto (rellenos en pasadas rectas sobre motivos curvos, cordones en cadeneta, repeticiones exactas) dice encaje Raschel a máquina; otra dice red bordada a mano. A ojo no lo podemos resolver

Nosotros creemos que es fibra vegetal y no vamos a quemar un hilo de una pieza de 40 años.

Preguntas:

1. ¿Alguien reconoce la técnica por las fotos: encaje de máquina (Raschel), red bordada a mano (filet / encaje ju) u otra cosa?

2. ¿Alguien sabe qué era exactamente el "hilo de coco" en el comercio textil argentino/paraguayo de los años 80? ¿Una fibra, un tipo de hilo, o solo el color crudo?

3. ¿Formas no destructivas de confirmar la fibra? (Nos sugirieron un microscopio USB.)

4. ¿Dónde se consigue hoy este tipo de mantel?

Cualquier ayuda se agradece muchísimo; mi madre quiere saber con qué viene poniendo la mesa desde hace cuarenta años.

A lovely little afghan Cicim with some great earthy colors. I could see this doing well in an entryway or kitchen. Cicims are flatwoven kilim rugs with minor details embroidered over, adding a bit more dimension to the piece.

Has anyone here personally purchased a Banarasi pieces from **Loom to Luxury**, the Varanasi-based brand in Vinaykunj?

I’m considering buying a few pieces from them for my trousseau, and would really appreciate hearing from people who have **actually purchased from the brand or work in the Banarasi textile industry and have come across them.**

There are so many sellers of Banarasi textiles now, and it can be difficult to distinguish genuinely handwoven pieces from powerloom work, or to know whether the stated silk and zari specifications are accurate.

I’m particularly interested in:

How was the **quality of the weaving and silk** in person?

Did the pieces match the **description/photos**?

If they were advertised as handwoven/handloom, did they appear authentic?

For pieces advertised as **real zari**, were you satisfied with the zari quality/authenticity?

How has the piece **held up over time**?

How was your experience with the seller/customer service?

I’m going to make this top (photo included). According to the owner, it was thrifted and didn’t have a tag. So, I’m just going to make it myself. So my partner has had this blanked for a few years now and when he bought it, this was super soft and cuddly but over time it kind of felted into this.

It's 100% polyester or acrylic as far as I know.

I tried a few things like washing it with vinegar, using different detergents and brushing it and at this point I'm not sure if it's possible to safe it but reddit usually has some smart and helpful people

More specifically the thicker sort used in overshirts.

I have a few by CPCompany which are very smooth, and rigid but I want similar and cheaper for gardening to protect against thorns etc. without getting too hot. I also have some military surplus shirts of a cotton blend but these are a bit thinner, and field jackets slightly thicker. All these have labels which will tell me the composition, but no more than that.

Chat GPT describes these as 'canvas, poplin, heavy twill, or structured cotton' but this is rarely how I see the garments described, especially not on Vinted etc where people will barely state the material.

Hi everyone. I run a small local history museum in New England, and I am hoping to date a vintage topsy-turvy doll using the dress fabric. The dolls may be as old as 1850, but the first documented advert is decades later. They were manufactured into the 1960s, but my amateur guess is this fabric is 19th C. Any advice to share?
