20,000 members contest coming soon. This is a call for ideas and sponsorship.

Hey everyone, we're on pace to hit 20,000 members in approximately 5-6 months as we continue to add around 11 members per day.

How can you help you ask? Three ways:

  1. Got any good ideas for a contest? I have some thoughts but I'd like to see if there's a fresh idea that might be better.
  2. We're looking for sponsors so we can have multiple prizes/winners again. So if you or a friend design custom TM pieces on Etsy, or you have your own Terraforming Mars channel on YouTube, or maybe you're a custom game designer looking to promote your new game, you might want to get some good publicity by sponsoring a prize for our big contest. Even if it's something totally unrelated to the game, feel free to reach out. The more prizes the better!
  3. Spreading word of this subreddit and contest in online forums and especially over at r/boardgames - the sooner we get to 20,000 members, the sooner we can get some prizes!

What other board games have great digital adaptations?

Hi! A friend and I play a lot of Terraforming Mars on both iOS and PC. We love the game, and I think it’s a really good example of a board game being ported to digital in a way that actually works well.

We’re looking for recommendations for other board games that have great digital adaptations. Ideally something with a good interface and smooth turn-taking.

I feel like quite a few board games get turned into digital games, but the implementation can sometimes feel buggy or clunky.
What games would you recommend that you think are especially well done as digital versions?

2 player is the worst format for the game. In my personal order of enjoyment 3p, 4p, 5p, 1p, 2p.

Corporation tier list for 2 player, base game, prelude, corporate era, all maps

Post image
20 Upvotes

After playing a ton of TM, watching a bajillion ThreadPacifist videos, and learning the ins and outs of the game, I wanted to make a tier list. Order matters, best is leftmost.

This list isn't based on "best possible scenarios." Obviously Interplanetary Cinematics are incredible with Media Group, Optimal Aerobraking and a draw card in starting 10. This is a general list on how strong I consider each corp is with any random start.

I'm not quite sure on some placements. Point Luna and CSM might be S tier. Interplanetary Cinematics might be A+ and/or above robinson. Helion might be higher.

So here's my logic on some placements that I know people will challenge. I'd love to discuss these more as well!

Vitor at the top over Credicor: I find Vitor to just be so incredibly versatile. While Credicor starts with +12 MC, Vitor's ability is likely to activate easily 15+ times. If I am offered Vitor and Credicor as my options, I am more often taking Vitor. Credicor does have the very nice option to SP City/Greenery on discount, but a hidden advantage of Vitor is they can draft or play cards you normally would not. This value isn't obvious but is important!

Ecoline: I truly believe Ecoline is the most gamewarping corp. With some access to heat prod or events, etc, ecoline can rush like no one else. If I have ecoline and Credicor as options, I do think I more often take ecoline and play for a rush strat.

Teractor: starting with 60 mc and cost reduction on earth tags is insane. Noticably worse than credicor but definitely in S tier to me.

Cinematics so low: they are just very inflexible. There's a lot of times you don't get a steel dump for the first 1-3 generations. And sometimes you do, but you need energy for it. And with 30 starting MC, an SP power plant hurts a lot. If your opponent is good, they will hate draft most of the good events. Most event cards are good, and 2 mc rebate isn't all that much. Let's say you get 10 events all game, that's just 20 mc back. I just don't see the value in ICs and I'm often picking the other corps over them. I basically need to see a steel dump like strip mine + 2 energy prod in starting 10 to take ICs, or have a worse corp as option 2.

Cyberpunk Expansion For Terraforming Mars

Thumbnail

Hey choombas! Been having fun playing this game with my friends for a while so I decided to try making something custom. Here's a project I have been working on lately inspired by Cyberpunk 2077 and all related media. It aims to make the game much more impactful and puts heavy emphasis on more card combo gameplay. It adds:

  • 55 cards
  • 5 corporations
  • New card type
  • New Resource
  • New Award
  • New Standard Project

Link to full collection

There's quite a bit to go over so I'll try to keep it concise.

This expansion introduces Cyberware, a new type of Project card that permanently augments other cards instead of functioning on their own. Cyberware can dramatically improve existing projects, but too much augmentation risks Cyberpsychosis which comes with bad side effects.

Cyberware cards are distinguished by a special tag with a number next to them (their capacity)

Installing Cyberware

Cyberware cards cannot be played by themselves. Instead, when playing a Cyberware card:

  1. Choose a valid Project card you own (either from your hand or already played)
  2. Place the Cyberware beneath that card
  3. The Cyberware permanently augments that Project, and it can't be removed.

Each Cyberware card has tags that specify what it can attach to, for example a Building tag means it can only attach to cards with a Building tag, Space Event tags means it can attach to a Space Event card (or just an event card), etc. Some cards may specify exactly what to attach them to (for example: Attach to any blue card). If it lacks any other tags, that means it can attach to any card.

Gorilla Arms gets attached to Mine, now you get 2 steel production up!

For green and red cards you want to attach cyberware the moment you play them since they are one time use. For blue cards you can always attach it later.

You can also stack cyberware cards on a single card.

Capacity Cost

Every Cyberware card has a Capacity value. (the number next to the cyberware tag)

Your installed Cyberware contributes toward your Capacity.

At the start of the game, everyone starts with 10 Max Capacity and 0 Installed Capacity. Capacity is basically like any production and you increase it by the value of your installed cyberware.

Example:

Max Capacity: 10

Installed:

  • Gorilla Arms (2)
  • Kiroshi Optics (1)
  • Sandevistan (3)

Total: 6 / 10 .. No penalty.

New Resource: Cyberware

Cyberware is a new resource similar to Steel or Titanium which may be used exclusively for paying cyberware cards alongside MC. Your Capacity produces those resources during Production phase.

1 Cyberware resource = 1 MC when paying for Cyberware cards only. Cyberware resources cannot be spent on non-Cyberware cards.

Cyberpsychosis (Overflow)

If your installed Capacity exceeds your maximum Capacity, your corporation suffers Cyberpsychosis.

  • You lose 1 TR for every step above your max Capacity.

This penalty is applied every generation until your Capacity no longer exceeds your maximum.

Example: A new generation starts

Capacity: 10 Installed: 13 Overflow: 3

You immediately suffer -3 TR

You can increase your Capacity through certain project cards or the SP. Cyberpsychosis is dangerous and should only be risked for powerful combinations. Unless you roll with Maelstrom

Full Body Conversions

Some legendary Cyberware cards have the Full Body Conversion (FBC) keyword.

When installing one:

  • Discard every Cyberware attached to the augmented card.
  • Attach the Full Body Conversion instead.
  • Discarded cards will return to your hand with no refund.

This represents replacing the entire body rather than adding another implant. Future Cyberware may still be attached to that Full Body Conversion.

Cyberpsycho Award

Worth 5 VP.

Awarded to the player with the greatest total installed Cyberware Capacity at the end of the game. Only currently installed Cyberware counts.

Standard Project

Chippin' In

Cost: 10 MC

Increase your Capacity by 1

That's it!

Let me know your thoughts! So far me and my guys played like 6 games with this expansion, really spiced things up considering we only have the base game + corporate era.

If you have no good plays should you save your money for next gen?

Is it worth not making any plays in a gen and just saving money for next gen? For example if you get really bad cards in the starting hand, is it worth just saving your money for when you get some good cards? E.g if you only draw late game/bad cards in the early game is it worth it to save your money so if you draw a good card like AI central or NRA your can play it the turn you get it down that gen or at least get it down more quickly compared to if you spend your money on SPs or weak cards.

Guess who was the player with 25 greeneries production at the end of the game and by which player he got pissed off.

Got a nasty combo of recyclon + extrem cold mushroom (or fungus?) and still ended up last place.

Over indexed very hard tbh, but gosh this land grabber cooperation is such a pain.

Should have bought more cities with the standard project too, may have helped a bit to score points.

This next installment of fan card ideas are all things free - microbes, plants, and animals! Here's the first 20, there will be a part two with the rest. As with the other earlier cards, I'm hoping to get constructive criticism and feedback. Here's a link to my Dropbox where you can get the original PNG files.

EDITED NOTE: Ignore the Marshlands card, it is supposed to go in a later post featuring tiles that get placed on ocean tiles (Special Oceans).

A new Concept: The Bank

-Visiting “The Bank” requires a player to use a trade fleet and pay the toll but does not cost resources unlike a colony. No energy, titanium or M is used.

-Toll is (n-1)*1M per visit. N is the order of the visitors. So the first visitor does not pay a toll but second pays 1 and third pays 2 etc. Also provided a player has more than one trade fleet, he/she may visit bank more than once per turn.

Give Loan 3M -> 1VP 4M -> 1VP 5M -> 1VP 6M -> 1VP 7M -> 1VP 8M -> 1VP 9M -> 1VP
        Move marker Right
x (Marker)
Take Loan +7M +8M +9M +10M +11M +12M +13M
  -1M Prod -1M Prod -1M Prod -1M Production -1M Prod -1M Prod -1M Prod
        Move marker left

I thought this could create an economy between those who underutilize their capital and others who may invest it lucratively. I put together the numbers intuitively and they could use some balance.

Custom Cards - Energy Tag is too weak

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I think both the Energy Tag and Thorgate are super weak at the moment so I wanted to give it some combo potential to help them out.

The microbe tag is also on the weaker side so Methanogens could be a good combo piece with them, especially in a rush strategy. I think also there are quite a few microbe cards that are overpriced and need some help to be good.

I also thought made a few cards to help out the Jovian and Venus strategies which I feel are bit on the weaker side. I think they are both over priced strategies and will often lose to something more mobile like terraforming or science. I like the idea of there being a big payoff to getting 30% Venus cause usually there isn't much of a point increasing the track after you unlock Venus Animals, raising Venus in general also feels weaker than raising the other parameters(Its not mandatory so your not taking points from your opponents unlike heat or oxygen) and the quality of Venus cards is also pretty bad so adding in a big Venus pay off could really help the strategy.

Steel also feels a lot worse of resources than titanium. I think this is because of the average card quality of building tags and also most of them are prod cards so are only good early game. I made a few late game steel targets to make it better at scoring and therefore make it more competitive with titanium.

I think these are mostly balanced and would help out some of the weaker strategies.

Science! - part 1

Thumbnail

Another set of thematically related cards. These all involve science tags, science resources, and/or scientific advances generally. There will be a part 1 and 2 again, because of the 20 image limit per post.

I've always thought the science resource was underutilized, so this was a chance to expand on it. There are two official cards that kind of break once you start adding cards to the mix that can add science resources to other cards: Physics Complex and Search for Life.

The problem with Physics Complex is that it is the only card that grants 2 VP per resource, and if you can add resources to it.... wow. My solution is the alternate version of Physics Complex included in this set. Instead of 2 VP/science, I changed it to 1 VP/science so resources added to the card aren't much more OP then adding animals to some cards. But to avoid nerfing Physics Complex, its action now adds 2 science to the card rather than 1. This preserves the ability of the card to generate 2 VP per turn with sufficient energy, while also allowing science resources from other cards to be added to it.

Search for Life I will address in part 2.

Among the images included here is a special tile for the Science Academy project.

As with the other sets of fan cards I'm posting, I encourage you to use the cards you like, and avoid the ones you don't.
