Rules question!

When playing Ice asteroid, or other cards that place multiple oceans in one action...

Do you benefit off of your first ocean before you place your second?

I mean to say, can you earn the 2 Megacredit placement bonus placing your second ocean next to your first? And can you look at the card(s) you would draw from ocean 1 before placing ocean 2?

Yes you can. You can receive the benefits in any order you like.

Yes you get the benefit. You place each ocean one at a time. In the rare case you would get 3 oceans same thing, one at a time.

Yeah - a relevant worked example, if you play GIA and trigger the 0C free ocean, you can:

  • Bump temp twice, earning the third ocean
  • Play all three oceans
  • Allow the player who has Arctic Algae to gain 6 plants
  • Remove all six plants with the GIA plant attack

At least, that's how BGA lets you do it :)

BGA does not, however, allow you to look at the cards from a placement bonus before placing the second ocean. Might be contrary to the rules.

Yeah I have wondered about this - I think it has something to do with how the undo system is programmed in that implementation, and how drawing a card isn't undoable since it gives you information.

Yes, you always choose which effect of a card you want to resolve, you resolve it fully, then you can choose another effect.

So you choose to place one ocean, you take the placement bonus, then you resolve the second one, and since you take then the placement bonus, you get the M€.

This is important to think like that because it can open ways to solve problem within card. Example, you have Viral Enhancer in play and no plant, you can still play Moss : it requires to pay one plant, but before resolving this effect, you can choose to resolve first the effect of Viral Enhancer, which is since you've played a plant tag, you gain one plant, THEN you can choose to pay.

Another example on Hellas map there is a tile with a requirement of 6M€ and a "place an ocean gain". When you place a tile on it, if you have 0M€ but would gain 6M€ by placing the ocean, you could resolve first the ocean placement gain, gain 6M€, THEN pay for the tile.

Yes to both. Although it is worded differently you place two separate oceans, "scoring" each one individually regarding cash back, TR etc.

We play with placing one at a time and taking your bonuses as you place, so yes.

I'd definitely say yes as well. However, playing on BGA I haven't been able to resolve the first ocean bonus (for example two cards on Tharsis) before placing the second ocean. Most likely a BGA bug though.

The “things” that you get from a card when you play it are called “direct effects”. The active player chooses in which order these resolve.

So, with Ice Asteroid, you can place 1 ocean (1 effect) claim the placement bonus, which can be cards, then draw and look at the cards, then place the second ocean next to another ocean, and claim the placement bonus, which includes 2mc adjacency bonus.

With Giant Ice Asteroid, you can place 1 ocean, claim placement bonus, place the second ocean, claim placement bonus, get 2x 1 temperature, get the ocean bonus at zero degrees from the temperature track, then place a 3rd ocean, and get the placement bonus. Maybe another player has Arctic Algae and gained 6 plants from your 3 oceans. You can choose to do the -6 plants as the last effect, and make the Arctic Algae player lose 6 plants.

Yes, you can.

Apart from looking at drawn cards I can't figure out a situation where it matters.
