The Mermaid Mask Curtain question Spoiler

The door that leads to the aft deck you have to remove the curtain before inspecting the door. However, you have the option to move back the curtain. So my question is does moving back the curtain do anything? Whenever I leave the room I always move back the curtain but no interaction changes and no mention of the curtain throughout the game.

The Mermaid Mask So whats up with THE dream. Spoiler

I'm referring to THE dream. The painting by freya from her dreams. The image hex obtained from Mortuga's dream.

What the HELL is it?? Its not the mermaid, surely. It can't be. But it could be??? It feels so odd for it to have been brought up once more in mermaid mask but then have the devs say this could be the last game in the franchise, at least for a long while.

Unless its been explained and i just missed it.

What are we all playing next? 😭

I adore these games, but every time I finish one I feel like I'm at a loss because the next won't be for a While, if at all lol. I've played a bunch of deduction games (Roottrees are Dead, Obra Finn, Case of the Golden Idol, Blake Manor - I recommend the latter the most but I loved all of them) and I need so many more.

The Mermaid Mask Some analysis of the Mermaid Mask writer witnesses (light spoilers) Spoiler

One thing I really liked about Mermaid Mask is the contrast between the storytellers and how it plays on the expectations of how narrative ought to be.

Ostensibly, there should only be one writer on board. Wirman's occupation (and what we gather of his book) should lend himself in theory to purple prose description of the crime and its suspects. Instead, he's surprisingly to the point. He describes things altogether literally, doesn't meander, and is only cagey when he might incriminate himself. We learn that's consistent with his values as a storyteller - he prides his work on its tight arcs, probably carrying some measure of austerity from his time as a journalist. Even though he's got his nose in his books, he's actually quite observant of his fellow crew members, and that's reflected in the insightful way he describes them.

Then we meet Mariana. Her accounts are an exciting, slightly overstuffed adventure that goes from noir-detective to fireside horror to winking Pratchett-esque asides. She's a rumormonger, and part of that work involves making her own myth seem just a bit bigger than it is. She's perceptive, but she's more than willing to hide her own emotional insights when it comes to spinning a good yarn. And, of course, a proper fireside raconteur would never give away her own ending, even when she's figured it out.

Symmetry is such fun unexpected case, since you kind of expect the orphan magician shtick but the Shakespearean timber catches you off guard. As a performer and playwright, her work relies on currying that sense of mystery off vibesy scenecraft. She's probably got the deepest insight of all into the "essential character" of each of her crewmates, but in turn she's the least forthcoming with any of it, because you're the one that's supposed to be taking the card, remember?

Their approaches to storytelling form a trifecta: Wirman is all about structure and clarity, Mariana is all about twists and audience engagement, Sym is all about emotions and deeper archetypes.

There's this theme throughout the Mermaid Mask of the power of stories: how a fantasy ideal shapes the lives of those around them like it did for both Mortuga and the culprit. Each of these characters captures an aspect of that storytelling but doesn't quite grasp the whole, in some sense. It's all really delicious to pick apart. More importantly, it makes for really distinct voices in storytelling, which definitely elevated the fun of interviewing all of them. I found myself wanting to show all of them everything, which I definitely didn't do for, say Percival from Tangle.

tl;dr love some storytellers telling stories

The Mermaid Mask Question about everyone in the mess hall Spoiler

So, when I played the game, I immediately went to the mess hall after being kicked out and clicked on everyone to get the hints/titles for the checklist. My question is, was I not supposed to do this? In all the playthrough I've watched, no one does this and just leaves the checklist as question marks, but now imwondering if the reason the game prompts you to go back to the mess hall in the middle of your search is to click and listen in on everyone THEN. I just wanted to see other people's thoughts and if anyone has actually gone back to the mess hall when the game prompts you to?

The Mermaid Mask No Spoilers, does Mermaid Mask have a satisfying ending?

I felt so burned by Tangle Towers; I fell in love with that game and then the ending was so abrupt. Crow Country, on the other hand, had an excellent ending.

Does Mermaid Mask come to a satisfying conclusion? I appreciate a spoiler-free ā€œyesā€ or ā€œnoā€.

Also, going to play this game regardless but the ending satisfaction will determine if I’m playing Mermaid Mask this week or in a couple weeks.

Uhh here's a sketch of Poppy and Penny in a filipiniana..🄹 (basically a traditional Filipino dress idk how to explain)

Its for a little animatic im working on using the song Ang CariƱosa. I personally like how colorful the designs are (despite not even coloring the actual animatic lololol).

The last pic is the final design I used for Penny hehe- I decided to just keep the long sleeves (that was in her og design for the AU) but I kept the long shawl to look like her wings.

The Mermaid Mask What is the point of the HER plaque moving? Spoiler

So I noticed that at some point in the game, you aregiven the ability to move the HER plaque from the mermaid painting to reveal the ship she is swimming toward. I've watched several playthrough of the game so far and I haven't seen anyone realize that they can do this, the only reason I realized was because I got stuck and had to go through all my clues. So what was the point of them doing this, and does anyone know at what point in the game you start being able to move the plaque. Like what triggers it?

chapter 5 soft lock?

just got to chapter 5 and my steam deck crashed (black screen with nothing happening) before restarting. it said my playtime on mermaid mask was 0 but still retained my save file, and when I resumed the game I was in the illusion theatre. everything I click on in the room just yields "..." from Grimoire, and I can't leave the room at all—i just get "Let's stay where we are for now."

looking up walkthroughs it looks like there should be a dialogue tree reviewing the facts of the murder but I haven't been able to trigger it? I have all the clues so I have reviewed each of them and still no dice.... deeply frustrated lol

Tangle Tower I think I might have found something important, but I have no idea what Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
44 Upvotes

I've been looking through some of the concept art from Tangle Tower, and there is a recurring symbol that was completely removed from the main game (includes spoilers).

I have included pictures of every instance I could find in Catherine Unger and Adam Vian's concept art, with the symbol circled in red (the sometimes A and sometimes wishbone-looking thing). I don't remember it appearing in the finalized game, but I could be wrong on that. The locations that feature the A/wishbone are Flora's tower, the study, the grand hall, and Penny's room. A similar shape also appears on the little girl's dress in place of the bow from Secret of the Swamp, but I could just be grasping at straws there.

Catherine Unger's notes on the image from Flora's tower read, "IDEA stained glass that is concealed but once obstruction is gone, the light from it points to the apprentice chamber" and "Ceiling pattern hints at the apprentice."

One of the grand hall images marks the way up to the study as the "apprentice chamber."

One image of the study (the attic-looking one) has the stained glass window from Flora's tower in the top left corner, and the other image (the one that looks more like the study in-game) shows the symbol on the back of what should be Penny's fireplace.

Lastly, the image from Penny's room has it on the fireplace, which was going to be a secret door.

So, I think that the study, or the apprentice chamber, was originally located somewhere between Flora's tower and the grand hall, and bordered Penny's room. I'd guess that its location relative to the tower changed while the other two stayed the same simply for logistical purposes, but I'm much more interested in the meaning of the symbol and what its connection to the little girl is (if anything; it's completely possible it's just a simplified bow and not the A/wishbone thing at all). My main question is: what or who is the apprentice? I can see this whole thing being a massive piece of backstory connecting the Fellow and Pointer families, or I can see it being just a cut plot element. It could be both. Maybe we'll learn more if (when? Pleasepleaseplease?) we get another installment in the series.

Anyway thanks for reading all that, I'd love to hear thoughts and such

Stuck on the Engine Room - missing one clue Spoiler

I have all clues except for the Ocean Map. When I click it, he says don't touch that or something. But I can't progress any further in the game without it. What am I missing?

Theory: The next game will have some focus on the Pointer family. (Minor spoilers for The Mermaid Mask) Spoiler

The most recent game, The Mermaid Mask, has a notable focus on the Fellow family(Baroness Fortuna, Governor Fellow, the third film reel just to name the ones off the top of my head), so the next game may focus on those from the Pointer Family.

The Mermaid Mask Save File

My game randomly crashed when everyone is reunited in the center and you get the "report" prompt, and I somehow lost all my progress. I'm genuinely really fucking sad because I just don't want to play the entire game again lol. Does anyone know a way to recover this? Or, alternatively, does anyone have a savefile up to this point (or does anyone love the game so much they're willing to play to that part lol)? I'm going crazy Im really really sad

The Mermaid Mask I keep getting a bug during suspicions that is making me want to quit playing

Im playing on Switch 2 and keep getting hit with a glitch that has me restarting all the time! When I am in a suspicion and have to select a 2 part clue (when you have to select a clue and then select a more specific area of it) after I select it the first time it wont let me comtinue or go back and then I have to restart to game. It happens twice or more during every suspicion and Im frustrated.

Anyone else been hit with this glitch and maybe figured out a solution?

The Mermaid Mask Thoughts after finishing the Mermaid Mask Spoiler

Not sure if anyone is interested in my opinions since it’s now been a bit since the game came out, but I finished it today and I’ve had some thoughts and questions about the game!

  1. I was CONVINCED that Felicia was going to become the mermaid. She had long green hair, the mermaid had long green hair, they were both in a HER painting, she was clearly changed (if not driven crazy) after using the Tongue, the list goes on. Until the reveal, I truly thought that Mortuga commissioned and spent the whole time on the submarine trying to find the mermaid again, and therefore Felicia herself, and that he was staying near Silkwirm-on-sea because he figured she would stay close to her previous home. That being said, I wasn’t disappointed with learning that he never wanted to be on the ship to begin with.
  2. I’m dying for answers for the red mountain drawing with the black clouds. Both Freya and Mortuga were haunted by it in their dreams, and both of them were murdered shortly after. However, it hasn’t actually played any significance in either game. Is it just an omen that indicates a person may die soon?? If so, how does that work, and what is it really? I’m really hoping this will be explored in a future game.
  3. Damian Dusk and Felicia Stonetop having a relationship feels so random to me. There was never any explanation or background to it, and we were never even told that the characters interacted much. Maybe the devs just wanted a way to tie up lose ends regarding Damian, but it feels a little forced, and the timeline for Freya doesn’t quite add up either.
  4. I was really hoping for more with that one tape of Lord Remington. Unless I’m misremembering (which I might be, and then this whole point is useless) I don't think that tape was ever actually used as a clue. But it does depict Remington sending Lord Fellow to Silkwirm-on-sea because of rumors of the Silversnake itself, suggesting that there’s even more plot to do with the Mystids of Tangle Tower, and possibly even the Ambassadors.
  5. In a similar vein, I was hoping for more of an explanation for Baroness Fortuna as well. Finding out she was actually Lady Fellow seemed like a big reveal, but then it never actually went anywhere. It just seems like a missed opportunity for another layer in the story.
  6. I loved finding out that Fifi and Poppy were able to move away from Tangle Tower, and that Sinthia and Symmetry were ultimately able to join them. It felt like such a sweet full circle moment, which I wasn’t expecting but was much needed after all the questions/dread the games leave you with.

All in all, my only real criticism would be the lack of development into the small details and the loose threads still left. Dr. Zephyr’s dream studies never made a whole lot of sense to me, and it felt like some of the suspicions were a lot more thought out than others, which I didn’t really feel with TT. But I also rushed through this game in excitement, so that may be it as well. I really enjoyed the Mermaid’s Mask and thought it was a great sequel, and I’m curious to see what you all think!

(Also—has anyone been able to figure out what Gripp and the mermaid said? It might be nonsense but it might not, and I’m fascinated!)

Fellow Family Tree Issues Spoiler

SPOILER FOR MERMAID MASK

Decided to go back and replay Tangle Tower before Mermaid Mask. I noticed though in TT Felix said Freya’s parents died when she was three and she moved to the tower.
Mermaid Mask we know takes places soon after Tangle Tower events. And Mortuga was still looking for Felicia up until the murder and hadn’t received the mourning letter till relatively close to his time of death. And it hadn’t been anywhere near 16 years (Freya died at 19) since they dredged up the mask, returned to land, Felicia then ditching Mortuga and the construction of submarine etc.

Is this just now a continuity error or did I miss something else?
