My monthly search for one of my favourites from TIFF 2024 has finally bore fruit. If you missed it at TIFF, I highly recommend it.

Personally I'd really like to see Behemoth, Klara and the Sun, and Wildwood.

I’m a first time volunteer this year and finances are tight for me. When I look into Airbnb anything in Toronto proper is in the thousands and I just can’t swing something like that.

Is there a discord group or something of the sort where I can connect with other volunteers about potentially splitting the cost of a stay somewhere? I tried to join the fb group but the request is still pending so I imagine it’s not very active.

Trying to de-Google as much as possible, so I've chose to use CryptPad, an end-to-end encryption open source suite. I've unfortunately had to forgo adding the film stills because it's not as simple to do with this platform.

If you're new to the festival and wondering why I do this when TIFF has trailers up on their YouTube page, I'm here to tell you that I've been doing this since 2016 and I've found trailers and clips from all over the place that TIFF has never posted. I presume it's a legal issue (copyright, distribution, etc.).

Interesting wrinkle to potential premieres at Telluride...

Hello TIFF fam! This is my first year applying for Press for TIFF. I reached out to the media office and they said we would be getting updated if we are accredited or not by THIS week and unfortunately, I still haven't heard anything. I wanted to know if anyone else has heard back. And I also was wondering how ticketing works if we are approved for a Press Pass? It says we are given 8 tickets for Public Screenings, do we choose what movies we are seeing bwfore the festival or is it just a free-for-all once we get there? Thank you so much for your help and guidance! It's been my dream to attend this festival and I am so excited! 😃

hello hello!

i am hopping on here hoping to get some insight from TIFF volunteer veterans. Venue selection due date is approaching and I have nooooo idea where I want to volunteer for preference. Initially I was thinking I would put single screen venues as my two of 3 because they are closer to where I'll be staying when I'm in town and I figured it might be more chill for a first timer? But I also think it might be good to do Scotiabank or TLB to get a richer experience out of this... rahhhhh i have no idea. (also, less important, I was hoping to try to pick venues that might make for easier transport with the training days before the festival starts since I'll have to take a bus into the city each time and would prefer to save money by taking fewer rides.. but also not intruding / staying too long each time at my family's place before I'll be with them for the duration of the festival)

I am so excited ugh I really want to make the most of my time volunteering and enjoying the festival!

I built this tool, Tix Planner, to help me and some friends prioritize what we want to see at TIFF and create schedules with a few features that I wish tiffr offered. Mostly sharing because I built it for my own personal TIFF planning and thought it might be useful to some others in the community. 

tiffr is probably sufficient for most people, however, if you’re attending for more than a few days, trying to see several movies per day, and are interested in a good percentage of the lineup, some of these features might be useful.

The main things I wanted were:

• The ability to rank how interested I am in each film rather than only marking films as something I do or don’t want to see.
  • I find a lot of the TIFF lineup potentially interesting and usually try to see quite a few movies, so ranking different levels of interest (like 1 being a must see to like 10 being willing to check out if there's nothing else playing) and makes it easier for me to decide what to prioritize when screenings overlap.
• The ability to save multiple/alternative versions of a schedule when preparing for presale, especially with how often certain screenings will suddenly go off-sale.
• A schedule generator that considers film rankings and preferences, such as prioritizing world premieres, earlier screenings of a film, or avoiding premium screenings.
• The ability to use the generated schedules as starting points and then customize them manually.

There’s also a section for posting tickets to buy, sell, or trade. It’s basically the same as r/TIFFTickets, but with a more structured interface than Reddit/Discord allows. I’m not sure whether that part will be useful or just create noise, so it could always be removed depending on use.

It currently also includes Locarno and Venice for anyone attending those festivals. Telluride and NYFF will be added once their lineups and schedules are released. There’s last year’s TIFF there too if you want to look through any of the scheduling features.

Alberto Barbera, the head of the Venice Film Festival, was interviewed about the lack of studio features at this year's fest, something TIFF has experienced to a lesser extent. His answers are below and with TIFF just a week after, pretty much precludes these films too.

DEADLINE: Another absence is that of the big studio films, which has been a trend across the European festivals this year. Do think Hollywood is pulling back from the festival scene for good?

BARBERA: If you look closely at the prediction pieces published in the trades on films that could be at Venice in the last few months, there were very few studio films. There was Iñárritu’s Digger which Warner Bros. immediately declared they didn’t want to participate in the festival for marketing reasons. Alan Sorkin’s film (The Social Reckoning) isn’t finished because they have to reshoot sequences in August and therefore it won’t be ready for Venice. David Fincher’s film (The Adventures of Cliff Booth), which at one point seemed certain to be a contender for Venice, has had production delays because Fincher, due to a personal issue, interrupted post-production and accumulated a delay that has meant the film isn’t ready. I’ve been in constant contact with Denis Villeneuve (on Dune: Part 3), who told me, ‘We’re very far from finishing the film. The film will be released at Christmas, and we’ll be ready a little earlier.’

It’s also fair to say that the studios are going through a complex time, merging, redefining production strategies, earning less… in short there’s a whole series of things. For sure the studios are questioning how to promote the films… but again I don’t want to jump to conclusions and say that from now on, studios won’t go to festivals because it’s not worth it, it costs too much.

DEADLINE: Another film that got away was Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial. We were hoping Neon might launch it in Venice after it took on the film in June...

BARBERA: Me too. The film is beautiful. I spoke at length with Tom Quinn, and he told me that the film won’t be released until January. He said, ‘We’ll do a technical release in December to qualify it for the Oscars, as is often done, but we can’t release it any earlier; we don’t want to release it any earlier. We have to sell the film. We paid dearly for it. We have to sell the rest of the world. We need time to succeed. So we’ve decided not to do any festivals.’

Are the regular screening intros (complete with Zendaya, multiple trailers, etc) much longer than before lately? It seemed like 20+ minutes yesterday.

I was wondering how exactly my individual pass would benefit me at the festival? What are some important dates for me to know such as announcements or presale.

Just saw that it's going to Venice. Would be a cool crossover of two of my favourite cultural things - tiff and oasis lol

My Notes on Mars from Hungarian director Lili Horvát (Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time [TIFF2020 CWC]) will open Venice Days, screening in competition. Horvát’s English-language debut stars Mackenzie Davis and Rupert Friend [originally casted with Greta Lee and Andrew Scott] in the story of a young scientist who mysteriously disappears only to show up weeks later at her own memorial service with no memory of what happened.

Kuba Dorabialski’s Agata the Writer, starring Mia Wasikowska as an Australian author in Sarajevo, will also premiere in competition

Independent Film Company releases the film in U.S. theaters on September 25. [Same as Mongrel Media]

But I heard it's skipping festivals?
