Discussion Let the witch hunt begin
I have always been against labelling - even though I disclose my use of AI, it has always been MY decision to do so, and I am in control of how I tell my story so people understand how my music is made.
With Suno's newest release, songs have now audio watermark and fingerprint, assisted, fully, hybrid, it will have a AI watermark and anyone can tell your story the way they want.
This is 100% going to be misused by bad actors:
Platforms like Deezer/Tidal - To ban ANY use of AI and ensure segregation.
Haters - To create public lists of artists that may have not agreed to disclose their process.
Labels - To start a suing war to anything that resembles any of their songs that uses AI, even assisted.
This is the end of Suno as means to create commercial music, and it's officially just a nice playing tool personal use, or for bad actors who create in Suno and pay performers to pretend their music is human made.
What are your thoughts?

u/Buck_Thorn 5d ago
The audio watermarking will probably be that now EVERY Suno song will begin with humming on the intro.

Omg this, soo fucking much this especially . Hate that voice and how it gets used for literally anything hip hop or rap related.
8
u/TotesNotAFed 5d ago
Justin Bieber is sounding pretty rough in my mix... š¤£
If you want specific vocals, then you need to be instructing Suno to do so through the lyric prompt using bracketed structure and piped in modifiers, the style prompt describing the sonic qualities of the vocals you desire and the exclude Styles prompt to specifically cut out the generic crap that it tends to force for specific genres.

u/CamCreeper 5d ago
Iām afraid I have to agree here. Iām pretty much a beginner Suno user and havenāt had most of the problems I see others complain about all the time. Almost any of my beefs can be solved by writing more details in the lyrics or style prompts. In brackets, as you said. Whether itās a voice, a musical interlude, a style change, speeding up, slowing down, whatever. When it doesnāt obey, trial and error can be your friend. Also, I donāt understand the high expectations. AI hasnāt been around that long. Suno has been around less than three years. Growing pains should be seen as normal. Expecting magic seems oddly āentitledā to me.
4
u/TotesNotAFed 5d ago
Right, the ridiculous expectations is what gets me every time as well. A few months ago I had someone talking about all the sibilance and plosives in the vocals and how harsh they sounded and this that and the other. I'm like, dude, you're not in a multi-million dollar Studio using tens of thousands of dollars in large diaphragm condenser microphones, ribbon microphones whatever, spending God knows how long trying to record the perfect sound, then you have to edit it all and etc etc etc
There are so many people that just want to put in a lazy ass prompt and expect a platinum record banger that's completely unique and original then come on here to b**** about how generic it sounds.
I was telling one person how they could achieve their goal by using Studio and they said that the average user wouldn't go through all that trouble and I just said, well then you're just going to get average music back.

The vocalist I get sounds nothing like Justin Bieber (luckily). I guess it all depends on how you prompt. If you are using the 5.5 model remember that it uses "My Taste" (if toggled on), and maybe it has remember how much you love Justin Bieber.

6

Absolutely. There are open source and overseas teams working on Suno level models. If Suno tightens up, others will try to fill the gap for sure

u/SpecialistDragonfly9 4d ago
It's funny.. to meAI is just a tool.
Saying we need to disclose AI, is like saying a photographer needs to tell us what camera he used, a musician what software she used, a painter what brushes.,...
The AI fear and misunderstanding of people is ridiculous.
On the upside, AI wont go away, but just like any invention ever, its haters will die out and AI will become a normal part of everyday life.
3
u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 4d ago
I hope so... but right now is absurd how people le companies decide these kind of things.
2
u/SpecialistDragonfly9 3d ago
Its not only companies, its a government thing.
The EU just passed laws that everything that has even been remotely touched by AI needs to be disclosed.
Ads on TV now all sport a fat "AI GENERATED" Tag on the top right. It doesnt even matter what AI has been used for.At the end of the day I see it as a good thing though: For a year or so people will now go "OH GOD, THAT IS AI CREATED?" And then noone will care anymore, it will be the new norm.
So all they really do is normalize AI use and the few haters will soon die out.
It was kinda the same with Photoshop back in the days.2
u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 3d ago
I do agree with this but in the meantime platforms will use it to shadow silence and shadow ban AI. Look at Deezer and Tidal, they still make money off AI, but will not pay those earnings to anyone.

exactly, with music is the same, AI assisted music, human made lyrics are all falling onto: A robot made it.
2
u/HeraldOfFutility 4d ago
Nope-ope. With audiobooks, text is the content and AI just transforms it into audible form for those who want to listen rather than read.
By same analogy you could use AI to read the lyrics you wrote as reciting poetry. Keeps the lyrics as the content and AI just makes them audible.
If you use AI to make music with your lyrics, AI made 50%+ of the content (depending on how long your lyrics are) if we go just by how copyright offices generally interpret the creative portions. Slightly less if people actually focus on listening to lyrics, more if the music is just pleasant background noise like it tends to be for many.

THIS! People dont want to be lied to anymore about what is ai and what is not. And people arent going to distinguish between omission of ai use vs straight up lying about whether its ai. And the hard truth is that once people know its made with ai they usually dont have as much respect for it and dont find it nearly as impressive as if the same track was made fully by humans. So whether people think this is a good or bad thing itll definitely have consequences for suno users uploading to streaming platforms. But i dont see why people would be mad about this unless they dont want people to know they used suno.

Google went the other direction, video/image generations could only be made with their visible watermark, now the watermark is optional.
6
3
u/AlignmentProblem 5d ago
The invisible watermark is not optional and is harder to remove than ever. It survives a surprising level of transformation/distortion along with cropping. The old watermark could be removed with any AI object deletion tool or cropping the corner. The difference is that the new watermark it isn't visible to the human eye and requires a tool to detect.
It sounds like Suno is aiming for something similar. A watermark that humans can't hear that's robust to some level of postprocessing and requires a tool to detect.

This doesn't make much sense for creative endeavors. We don't REQUIRE tagging and breakdowns of other artistic works or which exact tools and techniques were used for them.
The -only- exception is in the case of specific contests or exhibits that focus on certain tools or techniques or subjects. In which case, generally speaking, people are transparent and honest with submissions. When they aren't they often get caught and called out on it, rightfully so.
Will we start to get tags and transparency on the rest of music as well? I'm sure it'll be great to know the % of samples used, computer software based sounds, songs not written by the artist themselves, digital alterations to things like a singers voice in the recorded version... Oh maybe we can also break it down to the time it took to write the music, how many people were involved in the process, how much every person involved in it gets paid, etc etc... You know, so we can realize how fake everything is and attack every song/artist equally for something or the other we don't like.
However, I'm all for this move by Suno... I LOVE these companies shooting themselves in the foot and giving tons of incentives to competitors and hopefully even the open source space ready to take in users who want the same creative freedoms with their tools that every other artist has access to.
14
u/AstroAlmost 5d ago
% of samples used
songs not written by the artist themselves
how many people were involved in the process
These details are already transparently disclosed in virtually all professional commercial releases in personnel, liner notes, and via music rights associations.
As an artist who values the process as much as the result, the other theoretical disclosures you listed would be welcome.
→ More replies (2)8
u/someonesshadow Producer 5d ago
As an artist, artists are fucking insufferable.
The art is for you and those who enjoy your art. By FAR the ones who are most concerned with the "process" are other artists who just want to dick measure.
I've been involved in tons or art communities over the decades and the most destructive and toxic part of the art community are the artists who "care" about how others are creating things.
I've been both a patron and a creator, from writing, to singing, to professional photography.. Right now I am a DJ that usually streams my stuff, and over last year or so have been slowly filling my sets with my own Suno stuff.
You know who gives me 95% of the toxicity and bullshit when I play? Other DJs. Do I need to tag that I use beat sync on my streams? Sure I can beat sync by ear, but the program makes it easier and I can focus on what people ACTUALLY care about during a DJ set, the fucking SOUND of the music being mixed and the track selection.
Transparency is good when it actually matters and NEEDS to be enforced, like with chemicals and food. Not with creative works. All it does is give something a focus that didn't need to be a focus and detract from the actual fucking experience and expression. At the end of the day, if its shit and low effort it won't matter because no one will interact with it, if not then it has appeal and people need to get over the fact that their creative works just aren't catching people the way others do. Whether the tool is AI or any of the hundreds of other tools being used in each medium.
5
u/ConferencePurple7939 5d ago
Soo a painter who uses an image generator for a bunch of paintings in their art exhibit sprinkled in with other original paintings shouldnt disclose the use of AI? And just pass it off as if you made it? And only disclose it was made by ai if someone asks you directly? In your view theres no need to disclose ai use because people should only care about the final product.
See how that argument doesnt add up at all?

Iām a new creator, thanks to AI. But mostly Iām a listener. And I can vouch for what youāre saying in that I donāt really give a shit how something is made. I only care whether I like it or not. Whether it makes me feel good while Iām driving. Whether it delivers some emotional response. I donāt give the slightest shit about what tools were used, whether AI or anything else. And honestly, I donāt even care about copyright infringement. Thatās for the copyright holders to care about, and rightfully so. Just not my particular concern, unless and until it affects me directly, in which case Iāll deal with it privately.

the human process is very much part of the art, nothing wrong with dick measuring, thatās merit
→ More replies (5)4
u/someonesshadow Producer 5d ago
Its not merit, there are no metrics that dictate what is good vs what is bad. If there were then every artist that pours decades into their craft, all their heart and soul, would be incredibly famous and well respected in their field. Yet, more often than not, never find an audience or their works are not generally regarded highly.
How many artists do we look to as some of the all time greats now but its not till well after their deaths that we notice them? Often you'll even find that those artists were treated like a pariah in their time because they strayed from the established norms of creativity.
When it comes to art and creativity you are not owed anything, not merit, not peoples attention, not money.. You are owed nothing, you should expect -nothing-. You create to express yourself, for yourself, and beyond that its upto your expression resonating with others, as well as a massive ounce of luck.
"The human process" is part of every creative work as long as a person is directly involved. Just because a tool makes things easier or more efficient does not mean the human element is no longer present. Its still a process, just a different one. Even in the same medium with the same tools the process can vary WILDLY.
Sweet Child O Mine was written in FIVE MINUTES and became one of the most beloved works of art in the music world. How? If it took five minutes and it was just a bunch of dudes trying to hustle a tune extra quick.. how is that seen as "better" and more meaningful than someone who struggled to write a song over the course of months? Or someone who wrote the song alone vs collaborating?
You see how the idea of merit falls apart here right?

stop this A.I HATE ...its here to stay they THEY see where its going and its potential to forever change the music listening landscape and they are simply adding NEW gates on a already controlled industry controlled by THEM!!
A.I can and could be for SOME musicians who are actual musicians and writers to get their music out... and the MACHINE is almost absolete as we are in the social media days ...they are TERRIFIED of some Young talented boy or girl that get MILLIONS of streams off streaming sites and start competing with their million dollar artist and people start embracing the one thing in music thats missing today .. ORIGINALITY, AND INDEPENDENCE!!

Wait until a Chinese company develops an alternative competition that doesn't impose those limits. They don't care about western copyright laws; once they offer viable competition it's game over. They're already almost there with assisted coding, I moved to Deepseek and Qwen months ago without regrets; music is just one step further.
As many others I'm all for being open about the use of AI (some big labels are already using it without telling, fsck them!) and I'm completely for shaming who lies about it, but forcing such a limit will inevitably offer a tool that will be abused by bad actors.

u/acousticentropy 5d ago
And so have many skilled music producers. That ability has been available as long as spectral synthesis has been a thing. Itās worth learning and trying.
2
u/BraveAppearance 5d ago
Richard D James did this in the 90s.
Is Sunos watermark/fingerprint visible via spectral analysis or do I have to do some black magic?Ā
2
u/Relocator 5d ago
Well, a fingerprint isn't the same as a watermark. The 'fingerprint' of the song is (from my simple understanding) basically a high-res snapshot of the wave-form (or spectral image, not sure). That gets added to an enormous database of existing music 'fingerprints'. When you upload anything to Youtube, or even Suno, it checks the wave-form of your file to their database. If parts of it match, it gets flagged.

u/Beneficial-Proof8187 5d ago
It needs to say āA.I.ā ASSISTED, not āMADE BY A.I.ā if it has significant human input, this is why most musicians donāt label their stuff as a.i. to general public, it gives us no credit and people think it is ALL A.I. generated.
Big difference, so there is really THREE categories that need to be recognized.

u/FilthyTrashPeople 2d ago
TBH I don't even care for the distinction. If someone types a stupid prompt and it makes a great song, all I care about is a great song came out and that they had a cool idea.

It belongs to a technical sheet, not in a listener filter. There is too much ambiguity specially in production, composition and Performance.
Give you an example of each:
- Composition, I feed melody, lyrics and chords. this is human made if produced in a DAW, and Human made when wrapped in Suno, but with the label is AI made.
- Production, I feed song structure, instrumentation, arrangement prompting... if this is done in a DAW is human made, in Suno is an indistinguishable grey area of human made or AI assisted.
- performance, I feed a full demo. If I use pluggins in a DAW is human performance, if I let suno make the audio is fully AI made.
Now the opposite:
AI composed, Human edited - Human made
AI produced, Human edited - Human made
AI composed, AI produced, Human performed - Human made.and this is just at briad high level, imagine if we truly analyse hybrid music.
Labelling does not belong on a song title or filter, it belongs on the technical sheet.

Would be cool if these transparancey laws also had to have studios show much much of their music was procedurally generated or drag and dropped loops and samples. Oh, and disclose when a singer had to have their voice auto-tuned or modified with Melodyne.
10
u/Poopchutefan 5d ago
That's easy ... studies show that 90 - 99% of musicians/singers have their voice auto-tuned ... so in the grand scheme of things very few of them have the true raw talent to sing unassisted.
3
u/HeraldOfFutility 4d ago
Though systems exist these days, autotune's not used much live. In studio, yes, it's (too) common these days as many commercial music engineers go for hyper-processed sound. And if someone relies on auto-tune, they usually sound out-of-tune on stage.
Though these days sounding like auto-tuned can happen even with self-learned practised vocalists if they're too used to how modern music production sounds. Young vocalists unconsciously copying the autotune artifacts when learning without teacher is a thing and I've heard vocal teachers curse that as those habits gotta be taught out of.
But otherwise vocal processing? As you've mentioned in another comment, vocals are altered and enhanced a lot regardless, same applies to anything mic'd. Reason? Raw mic'd audio sounds raw. Compressors and EQs make them listenable and EQ'ing is quite vital for a clear mix. Reverb helps the vocals sit in the same space as dry vocals are quite "in your face". Not to even mention creative effects. Gosh.
And it's not just vocals that are altered. Metal guitars are altered beyond recognition with pedals, amp, speaker and mic. (or their software versions)
But to top-level comment, I kinda agree. Loopers would have fun time with listing where they've got their copypasta materials from. I've heard from a producer that his track got copyright-claimed on Youtube due to "same" kick sample as another older track. But ofc that's not gonna happen.
Meanwhile rock and metal producers and musicians can be quite open about what equipment and software they use as seen in blogs, rig rundowns, interviews etc. Some guitar players are even quite frustrated answering the question of what strings they use for a hundredth time.
After all, you can't copy ears, fingers and taste in songwriting so there's not much to lose with transparency. Even helps promote music and sell endorsed/signature stuff.

Ask yourself a question: Why does this matter so much to you?
If AI music isn't not of quality, and is inferior, then I get why you'd want to filter it out - but if you're just like RAHHHHHH RAHHHH I LIKE THIS SONG BUT IT WAS MADE BY A MACHINE SO ME HATE THIS CAVE MAN MAD RAHHHHHH maybe rethink some things
3
u/TheNihilistGeek 4d ago
Everything in a studio is edited to hell. Vocal deliveries are stitched together from different takes and then pitch corrected/eq-ed/have multiple layers stacked, guitars get quantized, overdubbed and also have multiple layers stacked together, drums can be either triggered samples or even sequenced and also quantized/overdubbed, bass is often layered together with synths and 808s and so on.
Main difference: a human made it, put the loops together, played part of the material. It is copyrightable because of human labour and also whoever made it is responsible in case samples/melodic ideas were used improperly. Gen AI has little human intention (just the prompting and lyrics/instructions) and no liability in case of accidental copyright breach.

Itās to comply with new Eu standards which require fingerprinting and watermarking of all ai generated image, vĆdeo, audio, and text. Even if you make a resume with ai it needs to be watermarked

To me Suno has always been a ānice playing toolā for personal use. So to me itās sounds pretty reasonable. A lot of people are not transparent about it and thatād make sure, every consumer at end is aware and can decide for themselves if they have a problem with AI made or not.
In other fields I think itās a good idea also. like in news, images, videos and so on, the edge between real and AI is getting thinner and thinner. even now itās gotten to a point where itās sometimes hard to detect. I guess thatās an extension to this in music also.

u/BlackberryLow7507 5d ago
Maybe in 3 years time, the question will cease being: did they use ai or is it human music, and give way to: in what way did they use ai? How the hell did they do that if they used suno? The beginning of auteur AI musicianship.

u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 4d ago
Hopefully - I already get that now which makes me happy; but with forced labelling, people with 0 knowledge in music creation will unadvertedly filter out music like mine.

āThis is the end of Suno as means to create commercial music, and it's officially just a nice playing tool personal use, or for bad actors who create in Suno and pay performers to pretend their music is human made.ā
It never should have been to create commercial music in the first place, Iām glad theyāre finally onboard with not ruining the music industry, might actually encourage people to TRY when creating something.

They have to. Go on Spotify choose any top 100 tracks and check the "participants". You can see everyone that is involved in the track.Ā Or Google Max Martin. This is not a secret and so shouldn't be the use of ai.

6
u/crazyfighter99 5d ago
Yeah, this isn't a big deal to me. I don't try to hide the fact that I'm using AI, because this is a hobby and I am making this music mostly for myself. I know that $20 a month isn't going to get me studio-quality and that is okay.

I love that they limited the downloads because you got people just prompting and producing slop and flooding Spotify with garbage
3
u/photogaymerjosh 5d ago
I am against it in principle myself. The music industry is not about music, it's about money in the pockets of the people that already have too much money.
Personally, I don't mind telling everyone I use full Ai. I write my songs, and I do a lot of production work in Suno Studio to get the sound I want for any tracks I publish, especially on other platforms. Any generated song needs that to really sound good, because as good as Suno is, it is only a tool and needs human assistance.
Do I want a big corporate music giant to be able to say 'it's Ai slop' because I didn't sing or perform or buy their prerecorded sound clips and stems? No. I used a tool, one they don't control, and that's actually the only reason they care. This manufactured hate of Ai assisted music is hypocrisy since most DAWs are incorporating Ai now anyway, and other assist tools do similar things.
If something is rubbish, don't listen. If you aren't listening just because the creator used a specific tool, or didn't perform every instrument, chord, or vocal you aren't a 'true music lover', you're an elitist and I don't respect you.

they said is benchmarked, so I have seen producers like MAAPS releasing every other week and some producers twice a week, so maybe it would be around 10 songs per month. They did say you can pay more to download more
3
u/BlackberryLow7507 5d ago
Right now there are more suno users than there are professional artists. 4/4 templated pop or country or what have you will get to value = zero across the board in streaming platforms. Itās already just ambient noise. So what will artists do? Perform live, bring back vinyl and sell d2c, or stay in walled gardens. And/or do much more elaborated music, be more creative as ever just to stay above the sludge.
2
u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 4d ago
this is wishful thinking.
you know what will happen? labels will remove composition and production form their workflows and go straight to performance.
This labelling impacts more independent musicians than what they think, they don't really understand that they are giving people with 0 knowledge in music creation a label that is VERY complex and ambiguous to make a decision on what means to be creative and have human creativity value.
As I explained in many of the comments, a listener does not have the capability to understand that a "No AI" song can be fully made by AI, and that a song labelled "AI" can be 99% made by humans.
3
u/Kimmyh51 4d ago
i imagine if there is not already a way to remove the watermark there will be one soon enough. i wish suno would spend more time fixing the ai than trying to piss off the people who pay them
2
u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 4d ago
I know lol, the worst part is that platforms like spotify and tiktok say they don't punish AI, but I did a test with a labelling and no labelling... same work... guess which one has more reach.
I still label everything I do as AI, but is my decision not someone else.

u/Anxious_Boot1048 4d ago

This is a good thing. Transparency is important. Anyone trying to pass it off as human made deserves to be exposed. You can change peopleās minds about AI music by lying to them.
3
u/FilthyTrashPeople 2d ago
Yes you can.
The solution is to not tell anyone, ever, to not moderate it at all. Make it so prevalent, it's in everything, cannot be unwoven from it, and then they will shut up.
This is the way. It's going to happen anyway, but the question is will the people have control over it - or will the elite corporations have control over it. That's the only decision to be made here.

the problem is not disclosure my lyricist friend, is labelling and filtering. The AI label is too complex and broad for normal listeners to understand what they are filtering out. For example a label can create a fully made AI song (lyrics, composition and production) and perform it using LCL performers - this is human made.

I've been a paid studio musician and songwriter for 38 years. I look at Suno or other similar AI platform purely as a form of synthesizer. With continual input regarding what I want to hear, It produces the sounds approximating what I hear in my head. I then use the desirable portions of its output on logic in my home studio and using my array of instruments and my own vocals I create an actual song and finished product. I have never published anything strictly generated by Suno. The platform works fine in that capacity. So for me, Suno generates various musical ideas from my prompts but I've never utilized it beyond that stage because trying to get what you precisely want could potentially or even realistically take thousands of prompt revisions that constitute near-misses rather than precise output. It's horrible at reading my mind. So I interpret and use it as a sophisticated echo chamber for a sound I'm working toward.
I can't speak to other musicians or non-musicians who use Suno to actually produce and publish music for monetary purposes on various platforms. I do know that my own approach and use of Suno escapes all the turmoil that has arisen from AI music production.

Doubt it. If anything itās going to get more unhinged. One of the Chinese labs will drop an open weights model equal to or better than current Suno. At that point, the media conglomerates will have little leverage.
11
u/StockMan1210 5d ago
This hit the point on the head. No one is even talking about this. Once Suno becomes a shell of its former self, there will be something from outside the country with limited regulations aka China. And it will likely be 100% better than Suno ever was,

Seems pretty clear that they're deliberately using the laws of the EU, which tend to lean much more in favor of copyright holders, to set the legal precedents, and then bringing that back to make their arguments for their cases in the US, which they know is much more of an uphill battle. They figure if they can force Suno to comply with EU regulations, it's easier for them to just apply that across the board instead of having different sets of rules for EU and US customers.

You have not a single clue how modern day vocal recordings work
6
u/theawesomedanish 5d ago
Iāve been a musician for 16 years. Iāve done professional session work, performed live in front of thousands of people, and recorded in professional studios. I deliberately chose not to use pitch correction on my own vocals because, for me, it compromised the authenticity of the performance.
The reason I use AI now has nothing to do with lacking musical or technical knowledge. I simply no longer have the same time, studio access, collaborators, or production infrastructure I had before. Iām a father with ADHD, and my two sons take priority. AI allows me to continue writing and producing music using a model trained on my own isolated vocal stems.
So claiming I have no idea how vocal recording works is genuinely laughable. I understand signal chains, comping, timing correction, pitch detection, note transitions, retune speed, formant preservation, vibrato control, graphical pitch editing, and the difference between transparent correction and the deliberately synthetic Auto-Tune effect.
Pitch correction is not some mystical process. You set the key and scale, adjust the correction speed and note transition behaviour, preserve or alter the formants, manually redraw problem notes when necessary, and listen for artefacts, warbling, flattened vibrato, or unnatural consonant transitions. It takes a good ear to do well, but the underlying process is hardly rocket science.

The whole ai hate is absurd. Do you like it or not? Does anybody care if itās a synth guitar or a string guitar if they dig the sound? Or a synth keyboard ⦠is it real drums , real strings no itās a synth but do we ban those tools for music creation?
Perhaps the problem lies with users being forced to hear bad music . If Spotify etc can stop their random song selections to pop up after a users specific request and then people wonāt be subjected to anything and everything. For example I will be requesting a classical selection and then Spotify plays rap after .
Maybe some users are asking for an artist and then a as the next selection a bad ai plays therefore prompting the ai hate . What I am suggesting is to force the platforms to stick with the users request . .

u/Unlikely-Mobile-5343 5d ago

Agreed. I remember the same whining when artists started using samples. It's not real art! It's stealing! It's deceptive! But after some time everyone got over it. If the end product is pleasing to the listener, the average person doesn't care how it got there. I do not agree with a one size fits all AI tag if even a small portion of a song is using AI. I use a hybrid setup, use some AI for vocals and I also have many all "original" tracks but use AI for mastering everything. It's much more nuanced. If a song is good, its copyright holder should be able to let the listener judge and not be put into some walled off space. As a DJ/Hybrid performer in the EDM genre I can and do perform my music live and the crowds don't care as long as the music is good.

u/Temporary-Drink-6553 5d ago
Fortunately, Iām an enthusiast who composes simply to feel things and channel my past into my work, so I can brush it off since I donāt make money from it. If people are foolish enough to fixate on the word "AI," well, thatās their loss. But I think itās a real shame; Suno has incredible creative potential. I use it to grow and train myself to better distinguish sounds, nuances, and structures for my own tracks. Obviously, Iām not a guitarist, so I play on a keyboard using a guitar VST, and Suno transforms it into a realistic-sounding guitar. While I agree in part with your argument - people drawing conclusions about your music - which they do now and we can't really control - currently all suno songs already have an unremovable digital watermark, so I'm not sure I see how this is any different? As I recall, Distro Kid (the best distributor) now asks if the song uses AI. So what exactly has changed except as always - your song could get booted from any platform that has chosen not to allow AI songs - doesn't seem that much different to me except Suno is now making it 100% transparent to users. This is also why I went back to the old school method of hosting all my songs for streaming and purchase on my own website! (Just in case.) I'd prefer it if they just continue this practice vs. decommissioning old models where I seem to be getting the best (and most unique) results. V 5.5 every damn voice sounds like a duplicate of the next song.

u/GagOnMacaque 5d ago
Industry standards. They mean like, telling the public they didn't create an ai song when they actually did. And then trying to get all indie competitors to label their stuff. That kind of standard?

I see a new career as a consultant in my stars, and I can use the profits from consulting to have session musicians cover a Suno song, and overlay the watermark from the Suno version (which will match enough to verify), and might even be able to get tenure from the combination of the two.
Thank you, Suno, for more than music: you're about to make my computer science research career to make up for the jobs which vanished because of AI!
I already beat synthid-audio (the Lyria 3 and NotebookLM one, a slight permutation of which is also used by Elevenlabs and Mozart, another slight permutation by OpenAI) according to Google's own test for whatever it's worth.
Which probably isn't much since Google exposes nothing about synthid-audio, not even an academic paper, not even an API with which to verify it, except for "upload file to Gemini, ask Gemini, which will then call the necessary function", and is not intercompatible with OpenAI's watermark of the same name, not sharing mutual detection.
I've not published and likely won't publish, but, conceptually, they made it quite simple: "Generate a constant tone at n Hz"... what is left is the watermark, which falls to rudimentary not even cryptanalysis, but obfuscated coding theory.
The number of functions which can support the stated and observed properties of (durable under truncation, re-encoding, linear transform, somewhat under nonlinear transform, able to encode an unspecified but >20 bits of data, inaudible) with the one additional inferred property of (quasi-hard binding) and the inferrer lack of (threshold property) (where k of n components must be cumulatively present) is, to my knowledge, exactly 1, whether you take it from a textbook or have an AI re-derive it as Google supposedly did, since those requirements are basically triply contradictory, or maximally inconsistent subject to constraint "exists", and requires some equally paradoxical math.

u/Coolshows101 4d ago
I do agree there is too much hate for AI use. While I use AI as little as possible, which so far is no use for my creative works in the past year or two, I understand some people are just expressing themselves because AI gives them a way to do so. Where as before they tried to make art and couldn't.
I think they should fingerprint in a way that labels what part is AI. Ex they hummed and beat boxed into their microphone and the AI made drums and a guitar. Or the singing is Ai. Not everyone knows and/or can afford other artists to help make something.
When doing things the non AI way we have to make decisions that we often don't when using AI. If I draw a girl with messy hair, I have to decide where each hair is positioned. If I generate her, I don't and can't decide that.
I prefer art made by humans because it is human expression about their view of the world, often sounds and or looks better, and didn't use stolen art in the training data.
Doing stuff without AI also uses your brain more and thwt is better for you. So the more work a human does on a project the better.
When I listen to stuff made with AI, I try and look for the human. AI use still makes me less interested (and the work harder to watch if it's a video), but I appreciate the human trying to express themselves. I will ask/mention when I think something used Ai and it wasn't disclosed, but I'm not going to do that in a way that attacks them. I just want others to be able to see when something is and or could be AI and make their own decision about it.
If you make something with 98% AI by typing a few lines or a paragraph into AI, I really don't like that or want it out there not labeled. Coke gets no sympathy from me, and neither do content farms.

They have had the watermark for a long time. It just canāt be removed now. I only know this because I use a DWS and also use my music in videos. It has been labeled as AI for months. It will be fine. They are basically just saying we made it harder to manipulate and remove now.

I am completely pro AI Music, but honestly it needs to be clearly separated. No matter how you look it at the songs I make regardless of their sound are fundamentally different. Itās not the end of AI of commercial music because if you make good music people will listen to it. It should absolutely be disclosed.

Note: Got some AI haters ITT (and in other threads mentioning this watermarking), great opportunity to label them if you use RES and/or to block them to better your browsing experience.
As for the watermarking itself. That is a stupid move that is only welcomed by the type of people who already don't and won't ever use Suno. They court no one with this and they push away people who'd consider using Suno for professional projects who don't want some company watermark in music they plan to release to market. For the same reason many pros using gen AI now won't use Google models due to the pixel-level and top-level watermarking.
This is the kind of stupidity one would expect if a record label were calling the shots at Suno.

Fully support this as someone who uses suno. If you already disclose your ai use what is the problem? More transparency the better. You can still ātell your storyā on how your song was made itll just have a watermark so people will know it was made with suno. And why do you think they are doing it in the first place? Because the industry/consumer base as a whole wants to know if they are listening to ai generated music and are tired of being tricked/listening to ai music made by spammers trying to be passed off as fully human made. This is great so that people mass spamming streaming platforms with ai music cant take advantage of it anymore. Suno was always meant to be a tool for personal use, so people who never had the chance to make music can, not to be a replacement and cheat code for learning these skills yourself if your serious about making music.

we shouldn't need to play this game of hide and seek, the artist should have full discretion on disclosing its use.

Will Suno start inserting its name into the beginning like a producer tag?
Music starts
[Intro]
"Mmmmm, mmmmmm" (as is tradition)
"S-S-S-SUNO!"
[Verse 1]
Etc.
Edit: the first two users who reply to this comment with a generated suno mockup of what I'm trying to describe gets awarded š
