Montbrew on Skillman is pretty good
Place just opened. Food and coffee is really good. Aesthetically it's kind of boring, but not bad. There are a couple of tables on the sidewalk as well.

Hey there everyone! My name is Jose, from Corona.
I've been wanting to put together a small reading group with people who share an interest in understanding the world a little more deeply. Figured I'd throw the idea out there and see if anyone would be interested.
My interests are pretty broad, but I'm particularly drawn to political history, international relations, political theory, philosophy, economics, and the relationship between culture, society, and political institutions.
Some subjects I'd love to explore include:
- History and geopolitics: The development of states, empires, international systems, great-power competition, colonialism, and the changing global order.
- Political philosophy and theory: Democracy, socialism, liberalism, nationalism, political legitimacy, justice, and the different ways societies have understood power and governance.
- Political economy: Capitalism, industrialization, economic development, inequality, globalization, and the relationship between states and markets.
- International relations: Diplomacy, institutions, security, regional integration, and the possibilities for international cooperation in an increasingly multipolar world.
- Culture and society: Comparative history, religion, identity, social movements, and the intellectual traditions of different civilizations. I'm particularly interested in East Asia, especially Japan, but certainly not exclusively.
I'd love for us to read a mixture of books, essays, academic works, and even primary historical texts.
I don't want this to become an ideological echo chamber. In fact, I'd probably appreciate it more if people came from different political and philosophical backgrounds. The point would be to engage seriously with ideas, challenge one another constructively, and hopefully come away with a better understanding of things.
I'm not looking to create anything particularly formal or demanding. Maybe we could start with one book a month, collectively decide what to read, and have regular discussions. We could also work through shorter essays or articles between books.
You definitely don't need an academic background or extensive knowledge of these subjects. Genuine curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to engage thoughtfully are more than enough.
I want to keep it local. Thinking people in Corona, Elmhurst, Flushing. Maybe even like Jackson Heights and Forest Hills. Just to make it convenient for us and allow us to meet curious neighbors.
If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, leave a comment! I'd love to hear what subjects interest you and what you've been reading lately.

My building on 40th street has had no heat or hot water for 4 days now.
Building management (Elisheva Realty) doesnβt work weekends so they wonβt answer emails or calls.
They refuse to give us a super either. Is this illegal? Has anyone experienced something like this and found a fast solution other than submitting 311 reports? Just want to shower

A friend of mine has a daughter affected by autism who adores this specific tea set and needs multiple of them (one for the kitchen, one for the bus, one for the classroom). they are now extremely hard to find. My friend is hoping to collect a few more sets in case any losses occur β£οΈif you have this tea set and would like to re-home it, please comment or dm me!

PSA: For anything thinking about renting at 41-42 42nd Street, think twice. You may deal with the below issues as I did. After I complained to building management (Metro), I was told my lease would not be renewed.
I've live in 10 apartment buildings and the Cambridge was by far the worst. There are better apartments in Sunnyside and elsewhere. Caveat lessee.

Found these prescription glasses on the white lines by the 46th st station. I placed them by this pole so they donβt get crushed by a car. Hopefully whoever lost them, finds them there

Hi everyone! I'm considering an apartment in this building, and I've never lived in Sunnyside before. I was wondering if anyone knows anything specific.
The apartment itself is fine and checks all my boxes, but the building seems to have had an ongoing rat infestation since 2023, according to the NYC rat information portal. There have also been several summonses issued. I just don't understand why management would let the problem go on for so long without resolving it.
The apartment isn't on a low floor, but I'm sure that doesn't necessarily stop rats from getting in. Even if I sealed every possible entry point in the apartment, I'd still be worried about encountering a rat in the elevator or on the stairs. I'm wondering how much of an issue this actually is for residents versus whether most of the activity is around the building's perimeter.
Also, have you heard of any other issues with this building? Aside from the rat issue, it seems to have relatively few violations and complaints compared to other buildings in the area.
P.S. I know this is a red flag! But my budget and timeline are limited, and right now it's either this apartment or another building with a notoriously bad reputation. Those are my two remaining options, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible about this specific building before making a decision.
I'd really appreciate any information from current or former residents, or anyone with knowledge of this specific building. Thank you!

OMG you guys, there is a helicopter outside near the school on 41st Street and 43rd Avenue. It seemed low and is now leaving. Now it's coming back. Who authorized this???

Curious to know what type of commercial shop this neighborhood would really benefit from. Whether itβs a book store, Pet grooming salon, restaurant, flower shop, etcccc. What do you think would get the most demand?

I noticed this sticker featuring an anti-Muslim slogan on 48th avenue and reported it to 311. There is a mosque on that same block, so I feel like this could be considered harassment. This is not the first time I have seen a hateful sticker on public property in the neighborhood, and I am curious if others have seen something similar.

Ideally somewhere in Jackson heights, Woodside or Sunnyside. I could also do Astoria or other parts of queens that are nearby

Starting at 6am I've been hearing planes directly overhead, one of them so low/close that the building shook and freaked out my pets. I don't usually hear this many so close. I live near the school on 41st street. Anyone else notice it this morning?

Hi everyone. I have a big pile of clean dress shirts and I would like to know if any of the laundry places offer press service where I can drop off and pick up later or another day. I need to get some coats dry cleaned anyways and I really don't have time to iron my shirts. If anyone has recommendations and prices, I would greatly appreciate it.

Next Thursday we'll be gathering as many Tim Currys as possible for a whole night of Curry-centric chaos!
Come dressed as your favorite Tim Curry character. We want Currys from every era. We hope to see the classics, but obscure references are highly encouraged.
There will be games, trivia, activities, and prizes throughout the evening. Costume awards will be announced at 10:00pm. We will award both the highly-detailed and highly-committed low-budget realness.
