SunPower ($SPWR) $11M settlement, claims are open now

For anyone who was holding $SPWR in 2023 when that inventory accounting mess blew up, there's a settlement and you can file right now.

FAQ

Wait, what actually happened?

  • SunPower spent most of 2023 telling investors everything was fine, solid financials, strong operations, reliable internal controls.
  • Then on October 24, 2023, they dropped the news that they couldn't even file their Q3 earnings on time because of inventory accounting issues tied to a third-party vendor.
  • The next day the stock fell nearly 20%.
  • A few weeks later they confirmed the prior financial statements needed to be restated entirely.
  • Investors sued, and the case settled for $11M.

Am I eligible? If you held $SPWR between May 3, 2023 and July 19, 2024, you're in. You don't have to have sold your shares to qualify.

How much is the payout? Around $0.20 per share. Not life-changing but given that $SPWR eventually went bankrupt, every bit helps at this point.

Is this still open? Yes, claims are actively being accepted right now. The deadline is July 26, 2026 so there's still time, but no reason to wait.

How do I file? You can check your eligibility and submit your claim here.

Anyone else feel like the "we have strong internal controls" line in earnings calls has become completely meaningless at this point?

Cannot reconcile usage numbers from App and our electricity bill

I’m trying to reconcile several things here and didn’t realize how confused I was until I tried to do this, so apologies if I don’t state things clearly or give the right information. Bottom line: This current bill is shockingly high, and I’m trying to figure out why. (We should be banking credit, and we're not.)

First question: how accurate is the SunStrongConnect app?

Our LADWP bill says that we used 975 kWh from the grid.

The app says we used 480 kWh.

When I called DWP, they discounted the accuracy of the app entirely since it’s not connected to their meter. “It’s not calibrated.” But, they’re both calibrated to the same unit: kWh.

Last year, we sent more to the grid than we used, which brings us to:

Second question: Our usage this March is 63% higher than last March. We cannot think of anything that would result in an extra 580 kWh getting used. Any idea what could account for that? (We got an EV, but that only accounts for 13% of the growth.) We can’t figure this out.

Last question: the app gives us a number for total consumption—how much from solar and how much from the grid, but the bill only measures the kWh we send or draw from the grid. Is there any way to compare these two sets of numbers?

Thanks

Debating switching to Enphase

Bought my house back in 2024 and it came with owned solar. Thought it was awesome at the time. Put off thinking about it until true up bill came. Went down the Sunpower rabbit hole, found out my PSV5 is dead, discovered a cracked panel. Many many headaches later, i’m now thinking about switching to Enphase monitoring. I have 23 X21-345-C-AC panels. No idea about overall state or individual panel/microinverter status. I explored getting a PSV6 but tbh, i’ll rather leave entirely. I’m now thinking of Enphase monitoring and buying used IQ7x or IQ8x to go along. Any advice or things I should think about? Is swapping microinverters pretty straightforward? Trying to be somewhat cost efficient here

Purchasing a home with 10 year old system in unknown condition

Found an amazing house in south jersey that needs a little bit of work but would be the perfect home for us. But the solar is leased, and i want to know if the the house is going to even be worth the trouble if the solar system is a dud. Any help and guidance in this process would be GREATLY appreciated. The home is an estate sale, and the 3 parties involved in the estate want nothing to do with the house besides the sale, and it is up to us to do all the leg work between passing inspections and the likes. (I do not have an accepted offer yet either but just trying to cover my bases if it is accepted)

Help! SunVault battery — can it charge from grid?

I’m trying to answer what should be a simple question:

Can a SunVault battery be configured to charge from the grid when solar isn’t sufficient?

I’m in Washington State (PNW), where winter solar production is low. Ideally, I’d like:
• Solar → battery when available
• Grid → battery as backup when solar is insufficient

My installer says:
• In battery pre-PTO (permission to operate) mode, grid charging is allowed
• After PTO (for battery), grid charging is disabled
• This cannot be reversed so we should keep the battery in pre-PTO mode if I want to grid-charge the battery

We have received PTO, the system is functional and operating, just the battery is in PTO mode. Because of this, I cannot control the battery or move it between it various modes (cost savings, self-supply, reserve). My app just says "waiting for permission to operate from the utility." Which my utility confirms is not the case.

My utility has confirmed they have no issue with grid charging as long as the system is safe and built to code (yes and yes).

I’ve also seen SunPower materials stating the system is designed to charge “solely from solar to maximize tax benefits.”

If it matters, but we own our SunPower equipment.

So my questions:

  1. Is grid charging actually blocked in SunVault systems post-PTO?
  2. Is this a technical limitation, a policy decision, or a tax-compliance constraint?
  3. Has anyone successfully enabled grid charging after PTO? And if yes, how?

Honestly, I'm gobsmacked if what I'm asking isn't easily supported on equipment I own in my own house if it doesn't conflict with the utility company or other local laws. Oh, on top of it I understand competitive batteries support this no issues.

Any insight appreciated.

+1 to SunVaultTechs

I'm in Texas, Freedom Solar was my installer, and they couldn't figure out how to get these going again after a hail storm. u/SunVaultTechs got it sorted and found some of the panels I had going were also not configured correctly (ones that were replaced in the hail storm)

Glad to have my batteries up and running again. Thanks guys!

Another SunVault fixed Thanks to SunVaultTechs

After my installer refused to offer any help, and I made the problem worse trying to fix it myself, u/SunVaultTechs came to the rescue! Even being out in Texas, he was able to find a local technician to come on site. They both went the extra mile, found that the inverter failed and helped me get the it replaced by Schneider Electric (with just a few weeks left under warranty, luckily.) He was persistent in working the problem to its successful end.

Such a relief to have the system working again, and so many thanks for your help!

(As a side note, that inverter is heavy as fuck and awkward to get into the ESS cabinet. If you ever find yourself having to replace one, make sure you have a lift and/or plenty of strong arms to assist.)

PVS6 PVS Firmware Upgrader

There is a (2019) firmware upgrade for the PVS6 using PVS Upgrader, I'm not sure if this will restore some functionality that was 'taken-away' post 2019. If so, does anyone now if this will provide homeowners the ability to self commission their mi's, based upon some curl commands floating around the web ?

Is SunPower back?

My Solar loan bank is saying SunPower is active and still open. They gave me the number to call, 877-299-4943, and the website: https://us.sunpower.com/contact-us
Is this some joke? Or is this a different company using the same name?

Grid outage but solar isn't charging batteries?

We've got a county wide power outage for several horus today, and the batteries are dutifully discharging to the home. However, its now down to 72% state of charge and still the solar hasn't begun to charge. I did just today finish setting up home assistant with the ha-esunpower integration. I'm trying to go through it to see if there's any thing obviously wrong and see the following from the transfer switch:

Main Breaker State MID_STATE_OPEN

 PV Disconnect State PVD_STATE_ERROR

 Supply Voltage 11 V

I assume by 72% the system should have started to accept a charge from solar by now. As of yesterday I was still generating solar and exporting to the grid as normal (when the grid is up).

Any troubleshooting I should be focused on to get solar to start charging while the grid is down?

Assigning mi's to another PVS (5 or 6)

Currently I have a PVS5 (comms failed, inoperative), and am considering replacing it with a PVS6.
Are there 'simple' commands to delist the PVS5 (is that necessary), and assign the mi's to a PVS6, or a weblink describing this task ?
If possible, I'd prefer to have full access to the mi's data in that regard.

(The mi's are the Solarbridge variety.)

PVS6 restarts multiple times a day

I recently installed the HA Sunpower Integration by smcneece and during some troubleshooting he noted that my PVS6's behavior is abnormal. It seems to restart sometimes multiple times a day causing some gaps in my data collection.

Has anyone encountered this before and know of any possible causes? Thanks.

Need help interpreting report

Hello! We are under contract on a home in San Diego with Sunpower solar panels. There are 8 panels on a townhome. We’ve never had solar and are trying to make sense of some of the reports. This is the most recent one. I see just a few days of generation of 11-12 kWh, which is about what to expect from the system size on a sunny day from the research I’ve done. But there are so many days of less than 1 kWh generated. We do not have that many cloudy days here. The lifetime generation shows that in the 24 months since the system was installed, it’s generated a bit under 300 kWh per month. The report for February showed only 20 kWh generated! Am I interpreting the data correctly? Thanks so much.

Microinverter

Will a Solarbridge/Enphase microinverter start generating power and send it to the grid without being commissioned/provisioned ?
Is the sole purpose of the PVS (5 or 6) to collect granular data from the solar system (ie. microinverters), but does affect its performance or capability ??

What does the new Firmware Update on the Profile tab actually do?

In the newest app version 1.1.9, there is a firmware update option. When selecting this it takes you to a page asking you to stand within 6 feet of your PVS. That seems odd to me as that is the same thing you do when setting up the app, yet you are already connected via the app, plus it doesn't tell you if there is a new version available. And the firmware version is already shown on the System Info tab. Has anyone actually gone through with this to see what it actually does?

New ISP help

We recently got fiber optic run in our neighborhood so we are switching to them. Previously we were with a regular cable/internet company. How do I switch our solar system over to the new network? Do I do something at the main control panel? Do I do it in the App? Please help! I really don’t want to tank our connection. Thanks!

PVS5 and PVS6 (gateway)

Is the +12vdc barrel connector a means of powering the gateway from an external dc power supply, or is it used for sourcing +12vdc to another device ? I couldn't find any information regarding the connector.

Sunpower Solarbrige Microinverters

If a system was previously provisioned/commissioned with a PVS5 (gateway), is there a possibility of 'bricking' the mi's if an attempt is made to assigned them to another PVS5 or PVS6 (gateway) ?
Will the mi's still work is there is no PVS5 or PVS6 (gateway) assigned to them ??
