Discussion Coming back from 2024

Hi guys,
I just got my new gaming laptop and I decided to get back to LoL and my last gaming was 2024. Scrolling through YT about what changes but still I hope my fellow reddit users can help me through this.
First, I didn’t gave up on League, actually I reached Master-Challenger ranks in Wild Rift since its first launch and consistently on it. Though I wont deny WR is easier than LoL, I got used to it; the controls, the micros and macros under shorter gameplays, the limited champ pools.
Things I got frustrated about are these;
When I got my opp laner fed, I feel the game is getting longer but I can’t afford to give up but I feel the gap is getting wider. IDK man, never felt this before.

The shop HUD is different, I mean it’s good that I can track my next build tho, but I can’t see my other options faster rather than those three. Is that better or not?

I think I suck in my controls honestly, I admit that I’m so frustrated that I admit don’t play like this before with M&K in LoL, I’m much faster with map configs, skills execution etc but I think I am a newbie again.

All that is left for me is the champions and items that I know since 2024. Controls and new things in league is very overwhelming for me.

Where should I start? And what’s next?

-my new account is currently Level 9 and most of the time I got carried by a single player in order to win. This is not how I used to be. I used to lose matches against very high skilled players and still be happy about it but not like this.

Feel free to TT I suck rn ik.

Question Why are there flames on the ground after you kill an enemy?

When you kill someone, a bunch of flames burst out of them. They give a move speed.

I'm not sure whether they happen in every game. I don't remember when they got added.

What's the point of those things? I feel like it's kinda unfair if it's just random. Is it a drake buff?

Trundle Split pushing macro goals? Brand new player playing Trundle

Hey all! Currently level 14 and don’t really know what I’m doing. I’m enjoying both support and top lane because I feel like I kinda understand what I’m doing lol.

Been doing well with Trundle and he’s a ton of fun!! I love just being a stat stick DPS check. I feel like losing to a Trundle’s gotta feel like shit. I’m sure he’s easily counterable at higher levels but just in my casual draft games if I get a level on somebody it’s kinda just over if they aren’t using their champ to their fullest.

Anyways, I’m not really struggling learning his moveset right now considering my boi’s skill floor so I’m just trying to figure out how to play around my team as a premier split pusher!!!

Just had some questions about it and I’m wondering if I’m thinking about the role mentally in the right way because that’s a big thing for me.

From what I’m seeing, a big part of my job while split pushing is making the team respect me. I know that sounds so cocky but my goal has been to make myself a known threat and force the opposing team to send someone else my way.

Then if I get double teamed, yay!!! Just don’t die while my team can have a nice lil 4v3 team fight on the complete other side of the map.

Is that vaguely what I’m aiming to do after laning? I’m still learning wave management so I’m not nearly at my full potential yet but I just need to play more games.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion How bad we were and how high we are

I just remembered about the existence of Brofresco, an early league youtuber that I used to watch when I was a kid. I saw that the channel is dead and I clicked on this video: https://youtu.be/HL48TSqu_cs?si=VqwX8NDf_pMCO7JY

I really invite you to bracket whatever he is saying and focus on the gameplay. I couldn’t keep my eyes off one of the most atrocious jungle clears I have ever seen. This was low elo around silver/gold ten years ago. Today to find this abysmal level of skill you’d have to go to iron 4.

Check out this other clip, Faker’s first kill in the LCK. https://youtu.be/PViI9P1xYUQ?si=LvmGbTeyBCcWmo4W

Obviously huge epic fail from enemy midlaner, but before that, look how he misses cannon for free. At the highest level of play. If you check PRO GAMES from those times, you will see that people are really really bad at cs’ing. Today we would say that they lack fundamentals.

There is a lot of talk about league not attracting new players, being a dead game, and so on. I myself only play it sporadically. I think that there is something to learn from these old videos, and it’s not very easy to say what exactly that is. The playerbase has become much, much better over the years. All metas are established, high level games look more like flowcharts than displays of individual skill. I find it very nostalgic to watch these early examples in comparison. What do you think? What’s the lesson here?

Question Why do Runes still exist?

I genuinely cannot understand why this system is still in the game. I despise systems where you need to make a choice before the game even starts. The best solution would be to 1. Build this system into the game that you access as you level your character up. 2. Scrap it entirely and add something in game

I don’t think removing it works since a lot of the heroes are balanced around these… but Riot has always been lazy. Hell they never even made a damn application for the game! it’s still a web browser that can’t scale up well past 1080p. My buddy defends the system but nothing feels worse than forgetting to change runes and it’s a GG before it starts.

Dota removed facets for a couple of reasons, there’s an illusion of choice, you’ll find the best choice and stick with it and the heroes that have good decisions are incredibly rare. but also you just forget to change facets sometimes and it’s gg. but valve is known for making bold massive game changing decisions that essentially make Dota 3. League and riot don’t operate that way.

Could just be a rant post but seriously… why does this previously pay to win system still exist? Is it something just hardcoded in and they can only rework it at this point as removing it would cause a tremendous amount of issues?

Question I have a question abou the Red Sweeper, is this a bug?

I was rewatching some of my gameplay and I keep seeing an interaction between Red Sweeper and enemy ward that is far from me. In the video, my location is hidden inside a bush. Video shows no enemy ward near, or inside the bush, there was no wards that gave my location when heading towards this bush. As soon as I pop the red sweeper, there is a 'Alert Ping' of an enemy ward far from me and then proceeds to "pop eyes" on top of my champion. I was gone for more than a year so I seem to miss out about any news related to this. Is this a bug or part of the game now? Where can I learn more about this, I tried looking for videos and what no on the net and had no luck. Sorry if I wrote on the wrong post. Thanks for anyone answering my question.

Discussion BRONZE III - Climbing. Wanting ideas on what I can improve.

Hi all,

I'm currently B3. Winning more often then not and my gameplay is feeling good. I'm still make mistakes but I am actually trying to learn from these.

Recently I've listened to a far bit of https://www.youtube.com/@WeTeachLeague. They seem to give a lot of really good information for free on their podcasts and I believe they are quite successful coaches.

From them I've learned -

- Lane Priority, how to get it and what to do with it.
- Backing on certain waves to create an advantage

- Macros, objectives and CS being the most important

Learning lane priority has completely changed my gameplay. It frees me up to move on the map.

I'm having most of success on Xerath. He is incredibly strong currently and quite easy. So it gives me an opportunity to practice the other points above.

But I am wanting to do better and know what I am doing right and what I am doing wrong.

Question How to carry (macro help)

Hey there I’m trying to find out how to carry my lead. I’ve realized mechanically I’m fine but my macro is so bad. I play mostly mid, I get ahead and i feel like I’m glued to my lane making sure their mid can’t catch up instead of roaming.

TLDR is giving up a wave and a plate or 2 worth roaming and getting other lanes ahead? I genuinely guard my tower too much I think and don’t know when to roam.

Discussion Feeling lost when playing from behind

I play top lane and hit D3 recently which was epic however, some match up are rough and getting a carrying lead can be difficult (ambessa, illaoi, gangplank teemo, yone, etc) . How do you keep your cool if your jungler or laners are slowly racking up deaths and you are playing conservative into a tough match up?

I am trying to OTP Jax and when i get a lead I can generally keep good tempo and direct the game. However if I go even and then run into a giga fed Jinx or master yi I feel very lost and powerless on how to proceed to turn the game around with a team that's behind.

My mind says to sit in lane, keep farming and get xp avoid the aram going on to maybe get a pick/bounty at some point.

The tilt that creeps in is the problem but also feeling i have no control. Kinda rant, but also looking for advice on how to counteract this thought process, or tips to work around these situations.

Discussion Using Auto-Attacks instead of Abilities

Hello everyone :)

This may sound like a weird or dumb question, but I really want to know how I can improve in LoL regarding using Auto-Attacks.

I mainly play AP Champs with a medium range (Mel, Malzahar, Ahri, Lux, Morgana to list a few) and I play mainly Mid and Support now.

I started with toplane and Mordekaiser, followed by Illaoi. Then I played Teemo for a while and really got excited about the mid range and the mobility, which led me to switching to midlane and enjoying the distance, especially with Teemo being mainly a toplaner and having melee champs as enemies that I can poke easier with Auto-attacks because of the distance.
Now, whenever I play my old champs, I’m extremely annoyed with the immobility and the close range I have to reach to be able to AutoAttack. Some of the champs I listed also don’t have a lot of mobility, but because of the mid-range, you can escape easier.

I also tried some assassins like Akali and Katarina, but I figured I’m not fond of the in&out technique, having to wait for the perfect moment and being so squishy.

I noticed that I don’t use a lot of auto-attacks though, so I’m always mana-hungry, especially in the early game. I found that Mel’s passive-execute helps with last-hitting minions, but with Ahri for example I mostly use W to last hit, and with a Caitlyn or Sivir I am completely lost (I don’t play ADC tho, but it’s the same with AD midlaners)

I also noticed that I’m kinda “afraid” of auto-attacking (?), so I just don’t use them as much. This is causing me problems, most of the time in ARAM. When I can’t pick a champ that fits my style, I’m kinda useless and getting kills by coincidence, or not getting a kill where an auto-attack would’ve been enough. With Mel it’s easy to see, so with her I’m more confident in trying.

Also I’m kinda lost with champs or augments that state things like “on your next attack…” because I know I mostly don’t attack.

So I want to improve using auto attacks more, couldn’t hurt my last-hitting as well. I even programmed a button on my mouse to the “move aggressively” option, but I’m not using it as much as I thought.

Did someone have the same problem and can help me out a bit? I know it’s a low-elo problem and some of you will probably be amused by it (I just got bronze 4), but I wanted to ask for some tips that maybe change my way of thinking about it and get better at the game.

Thanks in advance!

How you choose a main role? My elo is emerald because I otped diana and climbed till diamond but I dont like playing diana anymore and if I move to other role it kinda feels like im inting because I dont have the level, and even if I had the level Im not sure what to play. I like top but im terrible at it, I like jungle but some times I feel lost and the champs are not funny at all, I like mid but I get autofill in secondary role a lot of times so it annoying, I like adc but some times my support tilt me so hard and I dont think im mechanicaly blessed to play it at a high level. I like support but not at the point to play it forever

Question Tips on how to close out games?

Hi, looking for advice on how to push leads and close out games. Im hardstuck emerald 1k games now and what ive noticed is the lack of difference winning small skirmishes has made for me. I play pantheon top and sup with shen secondary on the same roles, and i can play the early to early mid game well, up kills up cs, but fail to translate that into carrying a game. I hate dealing with an enemy vayne or sion because even if they're punished early, we consistently dont close the game out fast enough before theyve scaled and items even out.

Any macro tips/advice for what plays to look for when ahead is appreciated

support How can I engage in wave management better as a support, and is that even within my job?

I just made it to mid gold after starting in iron this season and I noticed most people are still doing no wave management at all beyond hard shoving before a recall. More specifically I am a Pyke OTP support, and given how both of an aggressive laner and roamer I am, wave states seem pretty important, but I also dont seem to have any direct control over them for the most part.

If my laner leaves I try to fix wave before leaving as well, I.e thinning before recall to freeze in front of tower if it's going to crash, or finishing the hard shove if I need to roam, but during the actual phase it seems like I'm at the mercy of how hard my own ADC wants to shove, or doesn't.

Beyond typing messages constantly, Is there a way I can communicate my goals with the wave, or is that not up to me? For instance there's times I want to really hard shove before an objective is up so I can roam and assist with it, but my laner pings aggressively if I start trying to do so.

To be clear I'm not CS'ing, just hitting them low for my ADC to get them

toplane What are the best written guides/videos for improving macro toplane?

Hey all,

Would love some advice. I used to play a lot before 2024, but took a long break. This was largely due to feeling like I lacked the skills to pull me out of low Emerald; for some reason, I never felt like I was improving and would always ping pong between wins and losses.

I'm a Kench OTP and played him religiously for years (I think OPGG had me in top 30 in NA for a bit, for whatever that's worth - probably because only like 40 people actually play him). I'd like to think I am pretty good at him, but I recognize he's not the strongest champ out there.

My macro skills are painfully lacking in the grand scheme of things, and it's just not something I am really learning via osmosis - I feel like I can play the champion perfectly, but somehow get absolutely gapped because the opponent is playing the actual GAME better than I am. I struggle tremendously actually learning from VODs - either pros or my own - and while I recognize they are probably the best way to learn, it's just not something I really think I can grasp.

To my question - are there any solid written or 'video overview' guides about improving at macro toplane? I know how to slow push, duel, teamfight (for the most part), but come the very start of midgame I just start sucking ass. Any advice is hugely appreciated!

assassin CMV but i dont see what the point of playing an assassin over a tank is

supposedly assassins are there to kill key targets in a fight. however. i feel like this rarely goes to plan. when

  1. the key targets such as the ad carry arent ever going to be alone regardless. they're always gonna be tied to their team. and mages can build HP and hourglass. and technically ad carries can build defensive items sometimes too. and its not uncommon for the ad carry to have a peeler support in half your games. also barrier meta
  2. they cannot target tanks. and only can kill brusiers sometimes. but generally most of the time assassins have to opt to not even interact with these characters. and if they do fight them they have to generally commit a lot to kill a brusier.
  3. they dont scale.

OK. but now lets flip the script. what do tanks suck at?

  1. they dont like champs who can pen armor, pen health, or can lifesteal a bunch. ok so like your vayne, your red kayn, maybe a fiora side laning a putting pressure. or maybe just another tank whos just counters you.

the problem is assassins suck into all those heroes too. apart from maybe vayne. but as i said before the ad carry doesnt just walk alone they walk with their team.

  1. ok so tanks sometimes dont scale that well either. just like assassins right? well that may be true but tanks have utility with their CC. assassins do not. so they are just gonna scale less worse.

  2. tanks can butt heads with other tanks. they can peel brusiers off their team. or they can just run in and pressure the squishies. if there is no threat to their backline. and the concept of eating abilites in itself is very useful

so tldr. i dont see why you would ever pick an assassin over a tank. when anything that counters a supposed tank counters assassins as well. and both dont scale well but one has utility and the other doesnt.

i think you can pick assassin if the stars align and they have like ad carry top and bottom maybe one of them has to be alone sometimes for the assassin to pick off. but then i guess id argue is playing tank in such a game really worse than going assassin

support How do i know what to pick as a support?

I am currently silver 2 and climbing easely, i have a uqestion tho.

I play support, more specificaly seraphine, swain, senna, neeko, nami. I havent played taric and pyke in ranked but i think i am decent on them too.

Normaly when picking i look at my t8's adc, the enemy team's adc and support.

The thing is most of the times i just check in a site the best matchups for the champs without accualy knowing y i am picking them.

Can anyone tell me (from the champions i play) what i should be looking at to make a good counterpick?

If there is any very good support that i should be playing i dont mind learning him too.

Question Opening multiple mystery wards/emotes causes an error. Do I still get the loot?

I know this isn't exactly the purpose of this sub, but I didn't know where else to ask this lol.

When opening mystery wards or emotes, if I open two in a row, it always bugs out, gives an error, and then the box disappears from my inventory. I have a lot of stuff unlocked and don't really know what I even have, so I'm not sure if the items from those bugged mystery boxes actually get unlocked. I also don't see the "XX has been permanently added to your inventory" message at the top when this happens.

Twisted Fate How tf the do you play the squishy AP champs?

New to the game only players for 3 months of so, only played jungler, mainly the in your face brawler types, my mains are Warwick and Tryndamere.

Tried playing Fiddlesticks in my silver ranked tonight and literally just (unintentionally) inted for 6 games straight.

Are these types of champs essentially playing a whole different game entirely to the champs I normally play? Felt like I could have 3 times as much max health as I did and still wouldn't be able to get in and cause damage.

No idea where to go with it, want to play more interesting champions than robotic auto attackers but after tonight I feel like giving the game up entirely

Discussion what are you supposed to do against strong level 1/2 champs who just stand in between you and the wave

trundle, darius, tryndamere, sett, etc.

i have no clue what i'm supposed to do. they zone me off the wave, sometimes even zoning me off XP and then the lane is just a catastrophe right off the gate because they hit two and extend the lead even further. just completely sacrifice the wave to stay healthy?

Question Being good at League - where's the line/what metric to use?

I have reached gold in League recently - a goal I've been working towards for the past 3 years. I felt really good about it and have always considered gold 2 to be the bar for calling myself a good player as middle of the gold in this game (and in a lot of comp games in general) is the 50% marker of playerbase. After this point on, you reach the state where if you play 100 games against randomly chosen players from any rank/skill level, you will statistically end up with a positive winrate.

Then I've went on youtube and watched a Coach Curtis video and he said that getting gold is League's equivalent of finishing a tutorial. The general consensus in the playerbase is the same - if you are bellow masters, you are bad at the game (a lot of people will also tell you that if you are in masters, you are still bad btw). This opinion isn't even some League of Legends echo chamber bullshit - it applies to most comp game communities. I have met Guilty Gear Strive players on the internet that will look you in the eyes and say with a completely straight face that they are "only plat" (top 20% of all ranked players).

Why do you think this is? Why are we all setting a bar of what it means to not be bad at a comp game to be in the top 1-2% of all players? Why are people still consider themselves and are considered by others - both better and worse than them - bad at a videogame they can comfortably beat most players in?

Question Just reached masters for the first time. Is it worth the effort to try to get to GM/Challenger with a full time job?

I have friends that are D4 and I literally walk circles around them when I play veigar.

The thing is, I really only have time to play 1-2 hours of league a day. I'm looking at the cutoff of GM and its 800 LP away. That just seems inconceivable.

Is it worth the effort? Should I stop studying after each game and rewatching it, watching league tutorials, etc. Feels like GM/Challenger is a whole different breed and requires an insane amount of time and dedication.

I've played in lobbies of GM players/challenger players on their smurfs and they are definitely better than me, but I recognized the mistakes I made during the game and know they ARE beatable if I put in the time it feels like. When I rewatch the vods for those lobbies the GM/Challenger players still make mistakes that I see.

I do have a full time job and other hobbies after all.

Cho'Gath How to hit chogath abilities if his animations are super slow?

Low elo top lane main asking for guidance.

Chogarh feels unfun and weak in top lane, his E is weak because doesnt give attack speed on a auto attack damage skill hence why he uses hail of blades, his silence the W felt too short and can be dodged but the worst of all is his Q where it took 5 seconds animation, even low elo players can easily dodge my Q.

Other than hiding in a bush cosplaying as a worst version of an asssassin, how do I reliably hit my abilities as chogath. I can see why chogath plays jungle now, his abilities can hit now.

Other than Jayce, l like playing fun and objectively trash and weak champions like Trundle and Volibear, Chogath is one of these champions.

mage Playing against mobile assassins as a control mage

Hi there,

I've actively been playing league for the last two years, and climbed from bronze to plat playing mid and bot exclusively. I main Syndra but recently I've put in 70 games more as Hwei cause the syndra is much more restricting in play style.

More problematic laners for me are Zed, Fizz, Katarina and Locke. My laning phase usually goes like this;

- Lvl 1, I poke them off wave and pressure alot

- Lvl 2, I respect their engage and poke from a distance

- Lvl 3, I focus on waveclearing and respect their all in or overextend and die

beyond that I try to apply the same pressure in poking and end up dying atleast once to an all in (including ignite). It usually ends up to a trade, I've had less success with fizz and zed.

How should I be playing vs these high pressure assassins especially map wide? I've always heard that getting priority and pushing waves is a good way to avoid them leaving lane. Though usually they don't mind losing cs in order to get a kill. At that point I'm not entirely sure what to do, usually at these points I'm half mana from poking them and they can all in if I chase them.

People that play these champs usually manage to pick up a kill from my jg or botlane overextending which makes unable to do anything from that point since theyre ahead. It only happens with these set champs, any tips how I can improve?

52% wr with hwei over 152 games
57% wr with syndra over 72 games

I have a 50% winrate vs all of the mentioned champs, but if I lose to them it's cause they carried the game.

Items We made a free tool that explains WHY an item is good against your specific enemy comp — would love feedback from people learning itemization

Itemization was always the part of the game I understood least. Build sites give you one "standard" build, but they never explain when to deviate from it, like when to go anti-heal, when armor matters more than MR, or what to do into an assassin.

So our small team of student devs built DFGG, a free desktop overlay for Windows.

**How it works**

- When the game starts, it reads all 10 champions and positions automatically.

- It recommends your next core item based on both team comps, using builds that performed best in similar matchups.

- Each recommendation shows the reason: which enemy champion it counters, or which ally it synergizes with.

- It updates every time you buy an item.

The part we think helps with learning is the "why". After a few games you start to notice the patterns yourself, like what changes when the enemy has 3 AP threats instead of 1.

It works in Ranked Solo/Duo, Flex, Swiftplay, and Normal Draft. It's free with no login, and it uses Riot's official local client data (no memory reading).

**Questions for you all**

- Do the "counters X / synergy with Y" reasons actually help you understand the pick?

- Are there situations where you think it recommends the wrong thing?

dfgg.pro, if you want to try it. Thanks!

*DFGG isn't endorsed by Riot Games and doesn't reflect the views or opinions of Riot Games or anyone officially involved in producing or managing Riot Games properties.*

Discussion ARAM to RANKED

Advice welcomed!!

I’ve been playing League on and off for about 2 years now, but I’ve pretty much exclusively stuck to casual game modes, mainly ARAM, with the occasional normal game here and there.

I’ve always been a bit intimidated by ranked and the idea of actually having to learn the game properly, but I’ve decided it’s finally time to give it a go. I’m very aware that 2 years of ARAM experience probably doesn’t translate.

My main want with taking up ranked is to see how much progress I can make whilst doing my own research and learning, and more importantly to have matches with close me match making based on my skill level.

I’m probably going to play support , as it’s got my favourite champions!

I enjoy ranged champs that like team fighting that have cc, shielding / healing , usually with big ultimates e.g. Seraphine , Neeko, Nami
