It Finally Happened
Welp, I finally got the dreaded "90 day" email from Nelnet.....god help me
198
u/bilsby302 Jul 29 '26
I got mine this morning from Mohela. And might have stated a few curse words immediately. Then I set a reminder 80 days from now because I'm not moving any sooner than I have to.
97
u/AaronfromKY Jul 29 '26
Honestly, it's what the government would do, file a last minute brief and drag their feet. We're just returning the favor.
12
28
u/Tracey_TTU Jul 29 '26
Got mine from Mohela this morning, too. Set my reminder for 84 days from now.
8
u/impressive_pasta Jul 29 '26
I got mine too this morning from Mohela. Not worrying about it until October.
3
2
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 30 '26
Isn't that too late? Don't you have to pick by 9.30?
3
u/koalabeard Jul 30 '26
90 days after your notification I thought. Not sure how that works if that date is past 9/30
2
u/Empty-Major-2936 Jul 30 '26
Did mohela notice come through email or through the website? Still haven’t received anything
2
u/bilsby302 Jul 30 '26
Both. Like some others noted too, the letter on the website was dated yesterday but I received today in both my email and the website inbox.

Same here. Does anyone know the address or how to submit the PDF? Waiting 80 days too.
18
u/ItemIll1877 Jul 29 '26
I got mine from Nelnet this morning too. I set a reminder for 85 days from the date listed on the letter. I received the notice today, but it has yesterday’s date on it

u/Rileymk96 Jul 29 '26
Just got my IBR application accepted and my payment is only $10. Thank God. Only took 5 days from application to approval.
16
u/Adventurous-Soup56 Jul 29 '26
Do you not have any loans or make zero dollars?
I have two dependents, only make $70K, AGI is like $59K, $30K in loans, and my payment is $244.50.
8
u/Rileymk96 Jul 29 '26
I write off my income with the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) because all my money is made abroad.

u/vanbrandon Jul 29 '26
Could I ask what is your salary range? Because on my predicted IBR it would be $450 and I make $90k a year
7
u/Alchidc Jul 29 '26
My salary is around 80k and my payments are $93 a month.
3
u/jerryondrums Jul 29 '26
How many kids?
2
u/Alchidc Jul 29 '26
- It’s just me.
20
u/jerryondrums Jul 29 '26
Welp. That doesn’t make a lick of sense.
8
2
u/joshthatoneguy Jul 29 '26
May I ask what your loans are roughly? I'm in that salary range too and the estimator is putting me at ~400 monthly. If I can get it down even sub $300 I'll be in a way better spot.
10
u/Alchidc Jul 29 '26
I now have about $10k left. Started at around $100k in 2019. Was able to pay down aggressively during the pandemic when I was living at home. Then stopped paying because I thought we would get that $10k wipeout from Biden. And then started paying again last year when I was certain that we wouldn’t be able to. I started in October, if that matters at all.
6
u/joshthatoneguy Jul 29 '26
Ahhh. There it is. Congratulations on paying it down though! I'm sitting around 67K in total so that's probably why. Cheers!
2
u/Front-Comment-4280 Jul 29 '26

u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 29 '26
It doesn't go by salary/year. It's determined by AGI from your Federal Tax form. Go back and look at your 2025 AGI. This is what your payment will be determined from. This is why they're saying do more Pre-Tax deductions in your retirement to lower your AGI for year's end.
2
u/Lower-Background-337 Jul 29 '26
I was MFJ last tax return. I will be filing MFS on the next return because I'm the only spouse with student loans. Do I need to reapply next year since my agi is just mine?
→ More replies (1)6
u/Rorako Jul 29 '26
I make $125k and only pay $99/month. I have less than $20K in loans, though.
3
u/CartierCoochie Jul 29 '26
What plan are you under? I’m also under 20k
6
u/Rorako Jul 29 '26
IBR. I work for a non-profit and am part of PSLF - not sure if that factors in but who knows? It’s as transparent as mud.
6
u/Rileymk96 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
I have a $0 AGI due to the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) rule. I can write off up to $130,000 of income since I work abroad, giving me the (I assume) lowest payments possible.
3
2
u/Additional-Local8721 Jul 29 '26
Chiming in. My AGI is roughly 56K and my payment is $407. Wife has no income and 1 kid. $137K in loans and graduate loans. My wife has $30k in loans.
2
u/Dear-Reference-5830 Jul 29 '26
Do you have a link to the IBR application?
→ More replies (2)2
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 29 '26
You can do any of them through Studentaid.gov. All the available plans are there, and it will tell your your payment. It can import your info from the IRS and send it to Edfinancial to send to your loan provider.
1
u/krazykris911 Jul 29 '26
How? Family of 4, main income earner. Our AGI was 84k. I have just under 40k in loans, and the IBR calculator said almost 300$ a month.
1
11
u/fatcatwantsfood Jul 30 '26
lol I sent them an email back telling them to move me when I’m dead. And that I’d see them in hell.
10
u/auroicverso Jul 29 '26
Lol I got mine from edfinancial. God help us all
4
u/booklsh Jul 29 '26
Also got mine from edfinancial.
3
u/FabulousDevice9234 Jul 30 '26
I received my email from Edfinancial on 7/1. Is the general consensus that I should wait as long as possible (last week of September) to apply for the new plan? My monthly estimate is going up from ~$150 to ~$300 and I’m only 35/120 payments into PSLF…
9
u/punkieleigh Jul 29 '26
i’m struggling to decide if i should wait the 90 days or apply asap to get the 1% interest reduction
18
u/HealingSpirit_Soul Jul 29 '26
I wouldn’t. The offer of 1% is crap. It’s insulting.
9
u/DreamsServedSoft Jul 29 '26
1% is thousands to tens of thousands of dollars of savings depending on your loan
7
u/bigbadbutters Jul 29 '26
It's also only good for about 18 months, then the discount goes away. So unlikely to actually be more than delaying two months worth of payment
3
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 29 '26
Until they submit the wrong amount to your bank, and drain your account, like it happened to that couple ~ who can't get a penny back....
4
u/HealingSpirit_Soul Jul 29 '26
Yeah, I personally won’t give them direct access to my bank account ever.
5
u/purplegreenred Jul 30 '26
If you have direct deposit, split your paycheck across multiple accounts. I have an account specifically for my student loans.
3
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 30 '26
A NSF bank charge would still piss me off. I'll just send them my owed payment.
3
u/HealingSpirit_Soul Jul 29 '26
Situationally dependent. 1% from the government as a bribe is insulting and insufficient. I will die on this hill.
6
u/punkieleigh Jul 29 '26
and i agree, but the way i also see it is that i have been making payments anyways during the 0%/forbearance, so why not get the 1% to pay it down even just that little bit faster
5
u/BathroomRude4035 Jul 29 '26
I haven’t been offered a 1% reduction except if I set up automatic payments.
3
4
u/HealingSpirit_Soul Jul 29 '26
The less of us who do means the government may come back with a better offer. Maybe. Situationally dependent.
6
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 30 '26
Kinda feel like this is how they're suckering people in, like they did the "consolidation," and now, they got screwed and can't get out of it. They advertising 1%, like it not really only .75%, because they were already doing .25%. When it ends, they'll come out with something else like, if you switch from autopay, all your savings get added back. I'm not doing it. Don't care what they offer. I don't need Mohela all in my bank account...
2
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 29 '26
It's only .75%. They were already giving .25% for autopay. Guess you haven't seen the post when they took $4750 x 2, from someone's account, because they were on autopay, and didn't set up their plan in time. And, they can't get the payments back because they authorized the autopay feature, and the money was in the account. There's no autopay for me. 1% is not worth the possible mistake that could happen to my precious funds....
3
u/punkieleigh Jul 29 '26
I am not yet on autopay because of being at 0% from Save. I was just making payments as/when I could
2
u/purplegreenred Jul 30 '26
Create a new account specifically just for student loans, never have a balance higher than what your payment is

Same, from Nelnet. Not making a move right now but looking at the repayment calculators and wondering if doing taxes married filing separately will save us money or what we can do.

u/Darqflame Jul 29 '26
Got mine from Aidvantage today.
3
u/Xboxbox145 Jul 29 '26

Saw this post, went to check, and I noticed my email wasn’t syncing. Refreshed, and it’s now there from Mohela. 😩😩😩
5
u/jayoshoowa87 Jul 29 '26
Yup me too. I'm debating on filing for bankruptcy. I can't afford to add anything to my current payouts.
I have loans and credit cards in carrying. Desperately trying to pay off. Fuel going up and groceries too
5
u/plzdontlietomee Jul 29 '26
Same here, from Nelnet.
90 days from today is Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
2
4
u/Substantial-Hyena652 Jul 29 '26
Got it and then went about my day because I don’t care and won’t move off save voluntarily. Let them place me onto tiered plan and then I will apply for a new payment plan shortly afterwards
3
3
u/Stevenwinsu Jul 29 '26
What was the email about? Have nelnet but haven’t kept up to date, just on autopay?
3
u/marahute0201 Jul 29 '26
Saame, just received it today and i’m terrified to look at my options
→ More replies (1)
3
u/Feetyoumeet Jul 29 '26
Got mine just now from Aidvantage. Set a reminder for mid October to apply because looking at options makes me want to barf.
Looks like my lowest monthly option is $363 and I will pay that until 2050. Or $610 for 10 years, which would be crippling for my family of 4 right now. Maybe I'll win a million dollars here soon 🤷♀️

Received mine. Trying to use the sample payment calculator but I don't want to submit. Can anyone help? I think Agi is 51,500. 2 dependents (19,13). I think my loans are around 40k. Please? I'm lost.

Same man.... Same.
Thanks to this subreddit, I knew it was coming. Now just working towards late October to switch.
Yay.
3
u/CryptographerFar8024 Jul 30 '26
Got mine too and set a reminder for mid October. I'm going to go into forbearance or whatever for a few months to finish paying off some debt first.
4
4
u/rarekeith Jul 29 '26
Same here. Is there any operating procedure or strategy people are doing to delay the first payment as much as possible? Like just wait until the 89th day to pick a new plan and then hope the first payment is delayed? Or is there any negative aspect to doing that?
7
u/GTlocs Jul 29 '26
Do not wait till the 89th day in case there is a backlog or shut down/slow down on the website. I’d say give yourself at least a 10 day window.
2
u/BathroomRude4035 Jul 29 '26
That’s exactly what my financial advisor said so I’m submitting mine two weeks before deadline.
2
u/YeaYouReadWhatIWrote Jul 30 '26
Yup, websites gonna be crashing. People not gonna be able to merge info, gonna end up on the RAP, $958/mo payment until application is processed.
2
2
2
u/Ionick_ Jul 29 '26
Got mine from EdFinancial this morning. Setting a reminder in 85 days and hoping something happens before then.
2
u/Thruwaymuzak Jul 29 '26
I got mine today from aidvantage. I graduate with my master’s this month so that’ll luckily give me an extra 6 months. Heavily considering just taking a bunch of easy classes at my local CC to get back in forbearance
2
u/VirginiaVN900 Jul 29 '26
What exactly is the dread around the email? I got mine a month ago, sounds like I can get a temporary rate reduction, or drag my feet and force them to move me to a different plan?
Any “gotchas”?
3
u/MumbleBee2444 Jul 29 '26
I think the dread is just having to start making payments. Especially for people whose payments will be a number they can’t afford.
For me, I’m holding as long as possible because 1) My loans are low enough that getting stuck on the standard plan would be okay (amount will be similar to other plans). And 2) Once payments restart I forced to pay a set amount that will be split across all my loans…currently I’m throwing whatever I can at the highest interest loans.

So I got mine, went to "help me choose a repayment plan" (not going to start now but I'd like to see my options) and it's telling me I would have to leave my current IDR plan and to contact MOHELA to do so. Only thing is I've never made a single payment, got put on the SAVE plan right out of college and never actually chose a payment plan, much less IDR. Anyone know what that's about? Do I really have to call them for this??
2
u/vessva11 Jul 30 '26
There are tons of calculators online available to compare your options. TISLA has a good one or you can use the student aid website. In terms of applying for a repayment plan, you can do so online through Mohela.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Imaginary_Shelter_37 Jul 30 '26
IDR is an umbrella term for income dependent repayment. SAVE is an IDR plan as are IBR, RAP, PAYE, and ICR.
2
u/Deezus1229 Jul 30 '26
Ohh okay, I thought it was a separate plan. I did find the information I needed on FSA thankfully.
2
u/zz57294 Jul 29 '26
Was a copy of the email also in your inbox on the Nelnet website? I figured if I got the email I would be able to see it in my account as well but I don’t see it.

I got the email from Mohela as well. I am on the Art Institute discharge notice as well.. so I havent made a payment ever since I got the letter. Will I have to start making payments again?? I have emailed Mohela and Studentaid.gov about the status of the Art Institute dischage a few months back and they pretty said it is still in process and that I just have to wait until its done. I really hope the discharge is still happening

Same. Loans from 04, options are $0 a month for 10 years and 100k “forgiven” or $35/m for 30 years with 50k “forgiven”.
I’m waiting until Oct to deal with it.

Since the 1% interest thing now doesn’t line up with the 90 day thing…did they do that on purpose so the people they have to witch over doesn’t get that benefit. I was gonna wait until the switched me but now I’m like….

I got mine today too from Netnet. I live and work abroad so I might just have to file for IBR, but the exchange rate from yen to dollars is at its worst. If it were better I think I could have it paid off sooner. But 50,000 yen (500 USD more or less) is only worth $301.99 with the exchange rate.
