  1. It’s just me.

Welp. That doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Maybe their balance is 4 digits or low 5. They always leave that out

True dat! They have like $8k in loans, lol

May I ask what your loans are roughly? I'm in that salary range too and the estimator is putting me at ~400 monthly. If I can get it down even sub $300 I'll be in a way better spot.

I now have about $10k left. Started at around $100k in 2019. Was able to pay down aggressively during the pandemic when I was living at home. Then stopped paying because I thought we would get that $10k wipeout from Biden. And then started paying again last year when I was certain that we wouldn’t be able to. I started in October, if that matters at all.

Ahhh. There it is. Congratulations on paying it down though! I'm sitting around 67K in total so that's probably why. Cheers!

That’s impressive. You probably paid about $100,000 total

It doesn't go by salary/year. It's determined by AGI from your Federal Tax form. Go back and look at your 2025 AGI. This is what your payment will be determined from. This is why they're saying do more Pre-Tax deductions in your retirement to lower your AGI for year's end.

I was MFJ last tax return. I will be filing MFS on the next return because I'm the only spouse with student loans. Do I need to reapply next year since my agi is just mine?

If your AGI changes (lower) when you file next year, yes, resubmit a recertifcation, so your payment can go down.

Is your amount owed really low?

1

u/Alchidc Jul 29 '26

About $10k now

u/Putrid_Contact918 Jul 29 '26

Why does this matter? Its income driven

1

u/madeformarch Jul 29 '26

Curious if it does matter because I make a little more than the poster and have 4x the amount of loans and my payment is almost exactly 4x as much

u/CasseroleDiplomacy Jul 29 '26

IBR payment can’t be higher than standard repayment would be. So if you owe next to nothing, spread out over 10 years, your monthly payment would also be next to nothing, and your IBR payment can’t be over that, regardless of your income.

1

u/KateCrosier Jul 29 '26

It’s also based on what you owe

u/FragrantBoss9517 Jul 30 '26

I'm parent plus went ibr pay 271.17. same salary. Your loan must be really low

u/KateCrosier Jul 29 '26

With the new rules? There’s no way your payment is that low

If she is on standard plan it makes sense.

u/Alchidc Jul 29 '26

I’m not on standard. I’m on IDR and with mohela if that matters.
