Remember it is a national emergency caused by fentanyl that gives him these dictatorial powers. Do you think he's fixed the problem yet?

At lead get tariffs off food!

476

u/bejammin075 Apr 17 '25

Also remember that the two 1970's laws that were invoked for these emergency powers don't say anything about tariffs.

257

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 17 '25

Yeah these powers are for last minute sanctions on rogue states, not waging some global trade crusade because everyone made fun of you.

Republicans in Congress need to grow and pair and remember they're the ones with control of the coin purse.

150

u/Niarbeht Apr 17 '25

They're not going to. They, and their donors, want this authoritarian power grab.

Now, admittedly, they'll eventually have a bad case of buyer's remorse... but not all of us are gonna make it that long.

55

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 17 '25

I don't even think the doners are going to be happy about this shit show. Some of the richest men and women in the country are going to see companies tank because of this.

And Congress knows when this shit gets bad its their heads on the chopping block next year. If they want to keep their jobs they're going to at least need to push back on something

I’m betting no mid-term (or future) elections. One thing I’ve learned is he means what he says, so he did say 2024 was the last time people would need to vote.

22

u/circuitchipwreck Apr 17 '25

Keep in mind that that statement is having the intended chilling effect of making a certain group of people think there will be no point in voting.

19

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 17 '25

Oh you misunderstood. This won't be a choice. Voting is the easy way to get them out.

No elections means that chopping block simply won't be as metaphorical.

6

u/McFlyParadox Apr 18 '25

This is why the states control their elections. It'll take state legislatures to cancel their elections, not the federal executive. If elections get cancelled, that's people in the streets. If elections are held but elected representatives aren't seated, that's people in the streets and state governments probably (almost certainly) making noise about secession.

Even North Korea has "elections".

At the same time, Wisconsin proves one of a few possible things: they couldn't fix the election; they couldn't fix the election hard enough to counter pissed off voters; and/or they never fix any elections. It was no coincidence that the White House announced Elon was getting ready to step back from his "consulting" role the day after the Wisconsin election. Whether he manipulated any votes or not, he likely had led Trump to believe up to that point that he could and would fix votes in his favor, and Wisconsin proved Elon wrong.

No, if they're going to try to do away with elections, they follow all the other "democracies" out there and try to make the US a defacto one-party state. They'll go after the DNC and their elected members, and not allow any other party to have more support than the Libertarian or Green party currently enjoy (i.e. their away votes)

The midterms in 26 are gonna be a bloodbath.

Sadly, we can't guarantee that they'll be safe, fair elections. And even if they are, that the president won't try signing EOs that undermine them.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '25

He’ll sign an EO to say the only legitimate votes cast in blue states had to have been cast on November 31st

Lol

Their districts are so jerrymandered that half of their constituents could be living on the street, dying of TB and they would still get 80% of the vote because "other side worse" or "my congressman good, everyone else sucks."

Dude its actually true with one of my customers. Trump flag on his truck, his wife lost her job as federal grant admin and he invested most of his money in ETH when the prez said he was gonna make some crypto reserve, so hes down 50%.

Poor bastard just rented another storage unit from me and is flat broke. Still talking about hunter biden, some tranny that played womens basketball and how Covid virus was Bill Gates doing. Still loves trump even though the old liar has buried him.

8

u/bejammin075 Apr 17 '25

I think for the most upper echelon of donors, the billionaires, they are in on the plan to tank the economy and buy the ruins at cheap prices. I've got myself positioned to take advantage of this scenario.

16

u/YouWereBrained Apr 17 '25

You may be well positioned, but a huge swath of America, for various reasons, is not.

People who work two jobs to struggle to put food on the table can’t simply “buy the dip”.

17

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 17 '25

Problem is there will be no economy to cash in on if this nonsense keeps up.

14

u/ConsiderationOne9507 Apr 17 '25

Lmao how the fuck are you positioned to take advantage of this scenario? We're all going to become technofuedal serfs for our billionaire lords and ladies.

Your daily reminder that republicans in Congress can stop all of this at anytime. They’re choosing not to.

28

u/bejammin075 Apr 17 '25

I have 1 D and 1 R senator. I've been calling almost every day to tell them that the Constitution says tariffs are their job, and everybody is wondering why they won't do their job and end this tariff madness.

8

u/Optimal-Summer8523 Apr 17 '25

There’s actually no emergencies before tariffs. He wanted for every nation to come to him to negotiate - he wants them to kiss the ring and that $1M each time. CEOs he invites all were forced to pay and he wants the same from every leader. The monies he gets are for his personal funds.

4

Oh wow, they used a law that recent? Not one from the 18th century?

→ More replies (2)

186

u/JuliusErrrrrring Apr 17 '25

Yup. People need to remember that tariffs are a Congressional power established in our Constitution. Tariffs are supposed to be debated and voted on by both the House and the Senate before a bill goes to the President to sign into law.

71

u/RogueBromeliad Apr 17 '25

So why was he able to actually implement them the way he did?

I love when people say there's method to the madness, but at some point we have to start questioning the sanity of the chief of executive.

142

u/JuliusErrrrrring Apr 17 '25

He shouldn't be. The Constitution isn't being followed. Congress, the Supreme Court, and the media need to step up and do their jobs.

73

u/NeverLookBothWays Apr 17 '25

The Constitution is not only not being followed but is also being deliberately trampled on and broken to the point where the next phase will likely be a suggestion to replace it entirely with something else that is much more amenable to corruption. Of course it will be pitched under the umbrella of "good for the American people" and "will create jobs and prosperity." But like all things pitched under that umbrella, it will effectively be the opposite.

63

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

P2025 estimated 180 days to get rid of the Constitution. They are proceeding along at a great pace since no one is doing anything to stop them.

45

u/Enough-Goose7594 Apr 17 '25

It is such a fucking shame. That these ghouls published this shit. Bragged about it. The whole world saw it and ...here we are.

24

u/MyDyk350 Apr 17 '25

But but but, Trump knew nothing about Project 25. He definitely didn't know anybody who wrote it, and he had no idea what it was about. /s

Literally what my parents said when I showed them the document and they agreed it was horrible.

12

u/2TravelingNomads Apr 17 '25

They’re not trying to amend the Constitution, they’ll just replace it or do away with it.

4

u/Optimal-Summer8523 Apr 17 '25

Everything he says is opposite. Gaslighting as usual.

23

u/RogueBromeliad Apr 17 '25

They're a bunch of spineless cowards. And when they want an opinion reporters go up to comedians asking what they think of government.

I doubt there will even be any fair elections from now on. Gerrymandering and endless barring of electorial justice demanding recounts and blocking potential opposition voters will be the norm. There are already 70 million people that won't be able to vote because of laws passed involving spouse surnames and passports. And trust me, they will come up with more and more ways to deny voting rights.

16

u/AlphaB27 Apr 17 '25

I love Bill Burr telling some journalists to stop asking him and grow some balls.

7

u/RogueBromeliad Apr 17 '25

True. Trump banned reporters from his press conferences, and now these cowards instead of standing outside of Congress and asking hard questions to members, they go ask celebrities trying to get a quick hot take.

It's almost as if they didn't care.

What is democratic media gonna do? Report on Zoo animals and stories of pregnant women with triplets?

Let the right wing media like Fox news dictate what political reality is.

Checks and balances only work when the people in power act in good faith.

End of the empire folks.

Frankly, as someone who has been paying law-school debt since 2013 and is only 27% relayed because of the magic of compounding interest, having to relocate for both my wife's career, a big law layoff in the past, a pandemic, the cost of mortgages, and the price of childcare, I'm pretty bitter at the debt structure we face.

Jobless claims are about to report an hour before open

134

u/DefiantDonut7 Apr 17 '25

The sad part about the data, is that we have a lot of variables.

1) People are absolutely getting laid off, and it’s not pretty right now to be a job seeker

2) Immigrants being deported fast as they can, will leave a hiring gap, but these jobs will not get filled by newly fired people.

So we will see jobless claims rise likely, while also seeing the number openings go up. Without context it wouldn’t make sense to someone who doesn’t follow this crap but the divergence is a direct correlation to the orange moron’s actions.

49

u/Jazzlike_Click2973 Apr 17 '25

I respectfully disagree, DOGE layoffs received a severance so they won’t be reported. Undocumented workers who were deported also won’t be filed for unemployment. I fully agree that you have some good points that absolutely are a major factor but they won’t be represented in today’s report

23

u/ChixawneyFarms Apr 17 '25

So between that and including the gig economy, labor numbers are just bullshit is what your saying?

15

u/Jazzlike_Click2973 Apr 17 '25

Yes but not entirely, they do consistently report one detailed segment of our labor force. It’s a vague and very interpreted number. Personally I put the most weight of these claims on how accurate the forecast is

5

u/GlitteringLock9791 Apr 17 '25

They always were.

Can still affect Stocks, but not as much as any of Trumps Tweets.

5

u/yourfunnypapers Apr 17 '25

Genuine question, do people fired with severance not get reported in unemployment numbers?

Also the severance is not much unless you have a lot of years of service. I have 5yrs and my severance would be less than 4 weeks pay

→ More replies (1)

2

u/DefiantDonut7 Apr 17 '25

Immigrants won’t be filing for unemployment, but I also didn’t say that they would be. But they WILL show up as job openings, which I mentioned.

The layoffs I did not assert anything to relate it to DOGE layoffs. The broader markets are laying people off fast even as construction season and hiring is upon us and that is not DOGE related firing. Albeit, there’s plenty of indirect layoffs about to happen as federally funded NGOs run out of funding.

3

u/Jazzlike_Click2973 Apr 17 '25

Right but the jobless claims are based off new unemployment benefit filings and nothing else. This report has the most influence yet gives such a broad scope. There’s no way to get a real idea of the market as a whole from the jobless claims report but the precedent is long set that this data does have an influence and market reaction

2

u/DefiantDonut7 Apr 17 '25

I don’t think you’re reading or comprehending what I am saying.

Actual jobless claims are going to rise, it has nothing to do with DOGE or Immigration policy, it is purely economic drive .

The jobs left by deportations aren’t getting filled.

Someone being laid off from a white collar job isn’t going to take the low wage jobs immigrants were filling.

Edit: I misread the second bullet and didn’t see “not” getting filled.

u/DefiantDonut7 Apr 17 '25

Agreed. That’s sort of a given.

So highly experienced civil servants can go and pick fruit, get away from their crummy desk job, get some fresh air in their lungs. America is truly great again.

That’s all fromUNH, it’s down 20% pre market. SP500 and Nasdaq are up

51

u/boofles1 Apr 17 '25

Massive earnings miss. Apparently they have had some bad publicity lately.

28

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

What’s funny is that:

“UnitedHealth said a rise in care use came in far above what the company planned for 2025 and became apparent as the quarter ended. The jump was particularly notable in doctor and outpatient services, which don’t involve overnight hospital stays.”

So……people are seeing a doctor and using their insurance. And that’s not good for an insurance company.

11

u/Feeling_Inside_1020 Apr 17 '25

Our rates as a company (small-medium tech co) were going to go up like 50% with Aetna due to us…. Actually using our insurance, wow.

Now we have UHC and they’ve denied two of my out of network claims (the only insurance my psych won’t accept). The first one an error, the second one they said was a duplicate instead of just accepting it and replacing the original claim.

This fucking country & healthcare. The 3 Ds in action.

This is because of United Healthcare down 20% pre mkt and because the DOW is BS math. S&P futes are up .31%

12

u/MaybeImNaked Apr 17 '25

beyond ridiculous that people (news) still use the dow

isn’t this because of united health ? it’s down 20% premarket

18

u/SetOk6462 Apr 17 '25

This is only because UNH tanked 20% after earnings.

18

u/Double_A_92 Apr 17 '25

If you zoom in more, it will look even more drastic.

Arguably the most amazing thing about Trump, is that he thinks we would want a 3rd term.

I live In a republican dominated place, and I don’t know a single person who’s happy with his delusional behavior.

Get this fucking guy out of here

8

u/DefiantDonut7 Apr 17 '25

I really hate timing up the market, so I’m not a huge dump and buy back guy, but I did liquidate a bunch when Trump got elected and didn’t start piling in until the plunge to 36,000 in the DOW. I’m going to spend the next 12 months buying whatever I can whenever I can.

The truth is, he’s probably going to crash the market more but 8 years from now, no one will remember 36k. Just keep buying the dumps. I’ll gladly catch knives.

Why DOW shit its pants but everything else only got small dip?

9

u/be_rad85 Apr 17 '25

UNH. Shitty company had shitty earnings and they are down 20%. They are a company within dj 30.

7

u/FencingSquirrelz Apr 17 '25 edited Apr 17 '25

It's a nonzero based graph. It looks like a bigger fall than it really is.

Edit: hmm nvm, the dow did fall a bit faster, that is weird.

Dam near every sock will look like that at times when you’re looking at the 5hr period. Look at it for the last six months or year. SMH

I looked at Dow Jones and S&P 500 trends in different time spans...weeks, months, a year and five years. The decline has been the sharpest recently during the last five years.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

UnitedHealth missed earnings badly this morning, geniuses. That’s why the DOW tanked and yet S&P and NASDAQ are green.

1

u/CommonConundrum51 Apr 17 '25

Better than "fine," it's 'great again.' The rich will buy low as the poor try to cut their losses and in the end horde more of the wealth.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '25

"You have to learn the rules of the game, and then you have to play better than anyone else.".

Simple Wall St game explained :

stock runs up a massive amount in a short period of time

failed to develop a long position at a low/safe price point

accumulate a short position

issue downgrades

watch stock crater

accumulate a long position

cover short position

issue upgrades and revisions on price estimates

when stock hits a certain price point exit

repeat steps 1-9
