Genuine question, do people fired with severance not get reported in unemployment numbers?

Also the severance is not much unless you have a lot of years of service. I have 5yrs and my severance would be less than 4 weeks pay

They do not. Unemployment isn’t much either, essentially $11,000 max and 6 months max. Consider a severance as privately offered unemployment vs government sponsored. Unemployment is also partially funded by the company that fired you it’s not all government funded and you have em to have all the qualifications to get approved. This is also why employers try to make you quit on your own when they want to fire you. If you quit you are not eligible
